Letter to All Mothers of Children with ASDs

When I opened this document to write this blog post, I confess that it was going to be something about how dangerous and ignorant I feel Jenny McCarthy is. I went to YouTube and looked for a video of her spewing her ignorance, but I realized, I cannot stand to look at or listen to her and I don’t feel playing her message in one more spot is the right idea. So, instead of that, I have decided to address you specifically.

I am a mother of one child that has Asperger’s Syndrome. When I write this, please know that I am not writing as a beacon for the entire community. I am not asking you to donate money to me or any cause, and I am not profiting from anything that I say here. I am saying it out of love for my child and concern for all parents and children that go through the same things that we do on a daily basis.

There are so many things that I could write about today that I cannot pick which one. So rather than spread myself too thin I am just going to go out on a limb and make a collective list of things that are annoying me right this second.

Thomas Beattie: If you want to get pregnant that’s awesome, go for it. If you want to be transgendered, I’m all for that, too. However, do not say you are something you are not so that you can do something you want to do that is not legal and then try to change history for profit at the expense of your children.

Dear Sarah Palin,

As I write this I want you to understand that I am not in my mother’s basement writing it. I am in my pajamas, but they are really awesome pajamas and have nothing to do with the fact that I am the “blogger” you claim that I am. In fact, I am a blogger that manages to help support a family or two on my blogging. In my spare time, I offer money to help kids with Muscular Dystrophy (that’s a disability, in case you haven’t heard of it…) have a nice holiday season (their parents are drowning in medical bills and can’t always offer presents).

You seem to keep repeating that the reason that the Republicans lost and the reason that no one likes you is because of the media. The news media, journalists, and bloggers all had it out for you. We spun things. I’m here to tell you that we didn’t need to spin anything. You were sensational enough on your own. McCain was not voted in because he ran a dirty campaign and because you’re a full fledged idiot.

There Still is Much to be Done for GLBT Rights

This month, we elected the first non-Caucasian president in the history of the United States. On the same night, four different states passed laws against GLBT individuals. In Arizona and Florida, those states defined marriage as being between one man and one woman thus banning GLBT individuals from being able to exercise the right to marry.

In Arkansas, all unmarried couples (especially GLBT couples) were henceforth banned from adopting children or becoming foster parents. With over 3% of the millions of foster children in the United States living in same sex households, you have to imagine some kids just lost what they believed might become their forever homes.

Getting Past the Arguments for Same Sex Marriage

I had a lively debate on Twitter about same sex marriage the other night. I can refute every argument against Same Sex Marriage with facts. Its time America got past the silly nonsense of denying an entire group of Americans the right to marry.

I call it a right because there are over 1400 benefits (state and federal) that are afforded by the government to a married couple. While some couples make their wedding a church/religious affair, marriage is first and foremost a government granted right. If it wasn’t you wouldn’t need a state certified marriage license. The church would simply write down your marriage if only ordained by the church.

MDA is Shutting Adults Out of their Programs

I haven’t written anything on the Muscular Dystrophy Association in a long time. I feel it’s time to formally express my disappointment at some of the latest things that MDA has been doing. Before I get started, MDA is a valid organization in one way. It is doing extensive research into curing the 40+ neuromuscular diseases covered under their organization. That’s about the only good they’re doing. I won’t dispute that fact. What I do dispute is their promises of doing more for all patients with MD.

As a child, I thought MDA could do no wrong. MDA diagnosed my disability (wrongly, I was diagnosed with Werdnig Hoffman (SMA I) when I in fact have Kugelberg-Welander (SMA III)) at age 4. I was the MDA poster child for Northwest Ohio in 1990 and 1991. I was the Ohio State poster child/goodwill ambassador in 1992 and 1993. I was committed to helping raise thousands (if not millions) of dollars for an organization I always thought would have my back.

The Game of 2008 I’m Most Looking Foward To: Fallout 3

Ever since Bethesda Softworks announced the release of “Fallout 3″, slated for sometime in Fall 2008, at the E3 conference, I’ve been dying to get my hands on a copy of the game.

The game will be released for XBOX 360, Playstation 3, and Windows Vista on October 28, 2008. This is the one game I absolutely fell in love with through its visibility at E3. I’m not sure if its the possibility of using everything from Teddy Bears to lunch boxes as weapons or the intriguing back story (or VATS - which is wicked) that makes this game so appealing. Either way, October 28 simply cannot come fast enough!
