The manner of communication takes on another level as London-based company Musion adapted the method of holography in creating life size and life-like images in use for videoconferencing. Musion is establishing it’s reputation by adding new elements in their stage shows. Most of their holographic projections has been already seen in concerts performed by Madonna and the famous virtual band Gorillaz. Holography isn’t that new as Henry Dircks and John Pepper developed an optical illusion convincing their audience that they have encounters with ghosts. This concept was later adapted by Musion replacing huge sheets of glass with transparent polyester foils that is used to pack microwave meals.

The idea of robotic surgery goes far beyond our expectations. The future of this advancement not only lies with the hulking beasts but also with the devices at the other end of the size spectrum. These include tiny robots that will enter our bodies and do the necessary work from the inside without the aide of the surgery knife. While nanobots were still the part of the future, certain groups of researchers and scientists developed a series of mini-medibots that may infiltrate the inside of our bodies through the eyes, ears and lungs. This is used to deliver drugs, take tissue samples or even install medical devices like metal joints.

Supreme Court will Classify ruling for Patents

On Monday, the Supreme Court will explore what type of inventions would require a patent in a pivotal case that can undermine a legal protection for software. This patent rule will bar processes and methods in doing businesses. Among those are online shopping techniques, medical diagnostic tests, procedures for executing trades on Wall Street and even undercut patents on software formulation and manufacture. The bad side of this ruling might affect high-tech industries as it can invalidate many existing software patents or at it maybe difficult for them to defend their case in lawsuits. It can also hard to apply for patents since softwares are generally patented as a process for doing something than as a physical invention.

Nanoparticles may Damage DNA – Study

A curious finding was revealed yesterday by researchers from the University of Bristol, UK, challenging the capacity of nanoparticles and medical treatments in causing damage in the DNA structure. The experiment was made to see if a nanoparticle can damage the DNA of cells at a certain distance even when the cells are placed behind an impassable barrier of tissue. The said tissue barrier was about four cells deep, and is made from a “BeWo” human cancer cell. It is unique compared to other cell type found in the body as it become a standard cell line and this type of cell is very fit to work for laboratories. The nanoparticle used in the experiment however is a 30-nanometre-wide bead of surgical cobalt-chromium alloy, in which is used on a larger scale in making surgical implants such as hip prostheses.

It’s a common fact that aromas and scents can cure diseases but a study led by a professor from the Brigham Young University. This soon-to-be published study entitled “The Smell of Virtue” shows how people became generous with others when they are placed in clean-smelling environments. The results are determined after they sprits a small amount of Windex in a room. Researchers come up with this study as they see implications of rapport among workplaces, retail stores and other organizations that basically rely on traditional surveillance and security measures to law enforcement.

Microsoft’s Firefox Plugin Blocked by Mozilla

As a security move in Firefox browser, Mozilla developers blocked a Firefox plugin that is made by Microsoft. The latter shipped the Firefox add-on being part of.Net software which was updated last February. This blockage cause outrage among Firefox users, complaining that the software sneaked into their systems without their approval and it’s much difficult to remove. Meanwhile Microsoft made a move by warning to Firefox users since they are most vulnerable to the “browse-and-get-owned attack” which is due to a bug in the .Net Framework Assistant add-on.

The creators of Wave brag it as “what email would look like if it were invented today”, but Leon Watts a psychologist from the University of Bath, U.K. explains that email “looks like” a much lesser social protocol compare to anything else. He also said that “It started out as very informal memos; now it’s used for absolutely everything and has become much more formal.” Thus this makes email a second nature to us because some institutions and organizations adopt certain ways in using email as a form of communication.

Big Companies as Targets in Patent Case

More and more big names in the field of technology are subjected to a patent case by a US technology company. First, it was Microsoft, and then it was followed by nearly two dozen of big names accusing them of violating the same patent product. Some of the 23 companies named in the lawsuit filed in a federal court in Tyler, Texas were Adobe, Amazon, Apple, eBay, Google, Sun Microsystems, Texas Instruments, Yahoo! and YouTube. Eolas Technologies Inc. was awarded by the court 565-million-dollar judgment in a patent lawsuit against Bill Gates’ Microsoft in 2004 but it ended up settling the dispute in an undisclosed amount three years later.

Sony and Panasonic declared last week that the ambitious 3D TV sets will set mainstream on 2010. This will change every viewer’s 3D experience as they won’t suffer headaches anymore. It is part of retooling the world-renowned gadget as it is risky and challenging for most TV manufacturers. Sony and Panasonic will provide a full-HD experience by having a pair of active glasses altogether with the television unit. That makes up the 3D hardware for TV sets. Compared to the first launch of 3D channels which uses polarization 3D, they will create a new format for newer TV system. The downside is for you to transmit full-HD footage in 3D, you need to double-up the bandwidth required for a 2D broadcast compared to a lower resolution that is much cheaper to transmit.
