Female Foeticide in India

Some of the worst gender ratios, indicating gross violation of women’s rights, are found in South and East Asian countries such as India and China. The determination of the sex of the foetus by ultrasound scanning, amniocentesis, and in vitro fertilization has aggravated this situation. No moral or ethical principle supports such a procedure for gender identification. The situation is further worsened by a lack of awareness of women’s rights and by the indifferent attitude of governments and medical professionals. In India, the available legislation for prevention of sex determination needs strict implementation, alongside the launching of programmes aimed at altering attitudes, including those prevalent in the medical profession.

This practice, which is so unfortunately prevalent in our country, is truly

the most horrific form of gender discrimination. In a society that has consistently

devalued women, their only fault is their gender, and baby girls are throttled,

poisoned or drowned in a bucket of water. This is female infanticide. Of course,

of those baby girls who were never even allowed to come into this world, there is

no evidence and the abortion of pregnancies post an illegal sex determination is

yet another course that is adopted to prevent a baby girl from getting her due in

the world. Indeed, gender discrimination in our society is so entrenched, that it

begins even before a girl is born.

No end for female foeticides in India

Shocking statistics reveal that as many as 10 million girls in India have been killed by their parents either before or immediately after birth over the past 20 years.

In a shocking discovery, the Orissa police on July 23, 2007, recovered as many as 30 polythene bags stuffed with female fetuses and the body parts of new-born babies from a dry well near a private clinic in Nayagarh, close to Bhubaneswar. Police have arrested the manager of the clinic.

This discovery is just part of an unending series of female foeticides that have been happening in several parts of the country. In June 2007, a doctor was arrested on charges of illegally aborting 260 female fetuses after police recovered bones from the septic tank in the basement of his maternity clinic in the outskirts of New Delhi.
