Myanmar cyclone: Death toll crosses 10,000

Over 10,000 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless in Myanmar after Cyclone Nargis wreaked havoc in the country over the weekend.

Local media reports said that entire villages had disappeared after the ten-hour cyclone.

The ruling military junta, which is normally hostile to the international community, has requested neighbouring countries to donate food, medical supplies and construction equipment. A state of emergency has been declared in Myanmar after the 10-hour storm.

The world's oldest gorilla celebrated her 55th birthday today with a four-layer frozen fruit cake and banana leaf-wrapped treats.

Jenny's caretakers at the Dallas Zoo say she's having a few joint issues and her eyesight isn't what it used to be but she still looks good for an old ape.

"It's a special milestone for us," said Todd Bowsher, curator of the zoo's Wilds of Africa exhibit. "It signifies that we've made great strides in veterinary care, nutrition and animal husbandry."

In many women, hot flushes persist even in late post-menopausal years.

Hot flushes are among the most frequent complaints of women during the menopausal transition. In most women, hot flushes resolve within a few years of menopause, but some women report symptoms for many years after they cease to menstruate.

Researchers in America assessed the severity of hot flushes in 3167 post-menopausal women aged 67 years on average, who had attained menopause around 19 years back. These women were asked to fill out questionnaires that gave characteristics associated with hot flushes at the outset and after three years of follow-up. Initially, 375 (nearly 12 per cent) women reported bothersome hot flushes. Symptoms were seen more in women who had less education, had more recently entered menopause, had undergone hysterectomy, or had previously used oestrogen. However, the mechanisms underlying these relationships are still unclear.

When 61-year-old Australian John Deaves and his 39-year-old daughter Jenny announced this week that they had a child together, most people reacted with shock and disgust.

But while many would cite simple social unacceptability for their reactions, sociologists and sex experts say that aversion toward incestuous relationships goes far deeper than the violation of social norms.

In fact, research suggests that the vast majority of us are hard-wired for revulsion when it comes to the idea of sex between a father and daughter or other family members.

"When incest occurs, it is not only violating a cultural taboo, it is crossing ancient neurological wiring for avoidance," said Jonathan Turner, a distinguished professor of sociology at the University of California, Riverside

Danielle Heaney and Nick Cameron are in love.

But their love is taboo. They're half brother and sister.

"I think it would be lovely to grow old together," Cameron, 28, said at the apartment they share in Scotland. "Definitely," Heaney, 22, added, as he kissed her affectionately on the forehead.

There is a name for this: genetic sexual attraction. In Scotland, as in the United States, it's illegal. And Heaney and Cameron have been charged with incest.

"There have been times before the court case came up when I've said, 'Look, we've got to stop this,'" Cameron said. "We never could."

They were sentenced to nine months' probation and banned from any contact.

But the bond remained and they are now back together. The courts allow them to live together, but not sleep together.

Breast-fed babies grow into more intelligent children, with IQs up to eight points higher than those who are bottle-fed, scientists claim.

A study showed long-term breastfeeding aids brain development in addition to its already recognised advantages such as resistance to infections, allergies and asthma.

Brain boost: A breast-fed baby is likely to be more intelligent than those fed with formula

Researchers studied 14,000 children for more than six years and found those who were breast-fed did significantly better in IQ tests.

At six-and-a-half, exclusively breast-fed children scored 5.9 points higher on average in tests of overall intelligence.

They also scored 7.5 points higher in tests of verbal intelligence and 2.9 points in non-verbal intelligence tests.

A husband is believed to have murdered his wife before killing himself after she told friends on Facebook they were splitting up, it emerged yesterday.

Tracey Grinhaff's body was found in a shed in the back garden of the family home she shared with her husband, Gary, and their two young daughters, aged 14 and four.

An hour later, officers discovered the body of Mr Grinhaff, 41, an electrical engineer, in woodland nearby.
