What is a Drop Spot?

A dropspot is a kind of alternative mailbox. It’s a hiding place in a public space, where people can leave things for exchange. Anything. It’s a wierd and wonderful way to add personal character to the streets that we live in. Stash something fun and see what you get back.

To find a Drop Spot in your neighborhood, visit the Drop Spots map. Select a Drop Spot map marker near you, make note of its location and visual description and head out the door to find it! Once you locate the spot and discover your mystery gift, make sure to leave one in its place to keep the exchange going. For gift tips and ideas visit the FAQ page.

To create a new Drop Spot, find a hidden nook or crevice in your neighborhood to tuck away a simple gift you would like to share; perhaps a poem, photograph, favorite quote, or mix CD—something fun that represents you. Then log on to dropspots.org to map and describe the secret location of your gift so others can find it.

Chart the progress of all of your favorite Drop Spots online. Post photos, comments or messages relating to each spot directly in its virtual marker on the Drop Spots map. Visit this space to find out what someone thought of your gift, say thanks, share photos of items you have received or keep tabs on how many gifts have been exchanged at your spot.

Moose The Dirt Graffiti Artist of Britian

Moose, aka, Paul Curtis is widely known in Britian as being a graffiti artist by cleaning dirt from sidewalks and tunnels. Companies are starting to even pay him to sculpt dirt advertisements. Moose told NPR news that he got the idea “when he saw that people had written their names with their fingers on dirty walls in his hometown of Leeds.” The artists tools? A shoe brush, water and a lil’ elbow grease. The police officers in Britian have no idea whether to arrest him or to applaud him for cleaning up the streets. Add to Onlywire

GRASS WHEEL

If you’ve gotta run the wheel, you might as well do it in bare feet. Many of us are so busy being good little hamsters that we never have face time with green space. A group of students from Dalhousie School of Architecture decided to remedy this problem with a street-ready grass-lined wheel.

The wheel is of simple construction–just plywood, mesh, fishing line, and sod–but it’s loaded with meaning. On one hand, it’s a playful protest to the lack of public green space in Halifax. On the other hand, using sod for their material offers a deeper critique on urban greenery.

Sure, the grass feels good on the feet (you wouldn’t want to landscape this thing with cacti), but only in North America would a lawn with the personality of a military haircut be considered a traveling “garden.” Does rolling out a grass carpet really make a place more “natural?”

This project reminds us of Rebar’s PARK(ing), which turned metered parking spaces into temporary parks. Both concepts point out not only on our lack of interesting green space, but also our lack of time to enjoy them. We’re huge fans of urban intervention as a means of shaking up normalcy and calling for a change.

Since about ten years Theo Jansen is occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic matierial of this new nature. He makes skeletons which are able to walk on the wind. Eventualy he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.

At a first glance, what do you see the word above as? In black the word read as good while in white the word read as evil. It visualises the concept that good and evil coexist together. Neat set of optical illusions. Three more pics after the jump.

Optical Illusion that depicts optical illusion. Yellow area reads as optical while the colored area reads as illusion. Amazing.

Opposite meaning of teach is to learn. This is another great illusion where the word reflection of teach turns into learn.

The reflection of the mirror shows the true hidden meaning of the word hate.
