Conflict Map

In the course
of the 20th century, mankind experienced some of the
most devastating wars of all times. Where did these
wars take place? Have some regions experienced more
wars than others? Who were the main protagonists in
these conflicts? This map gives you the opportunity
to answer these questions. It displays wars with at
              least 1,000 military battle deaths.

The Nobel Peace Prize celebrated its centennial in
2001. Where did the Laureates and nominees come from?
How many Africans have received the prize? Alongside
the map on wars you will find statistics showing the
geographical distribution of Peace Prize nominees and
                Laureates since 1901.

The single-work, outdoor exhibition was the start for the Sydney Stencil Festival and failed to attract media attention with the targeted press. Surprised?

The 3x3 m painting with the title Murdocracy was created by the Tasmanian Die Laughing crew. It is a critical take on media in democracy and the "Emperor", Rupert Murdoch, the founder of News Ltd and the News Corporation empire.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Murdoch+Democracy=Murdocracy

Murdocracy depicts a massive, maniacally grinning face of the Emperor, Rupert Murdoch. Within the lines that define this character are myriad images competing for prime time - images of terror, sex, politics, entertainment, death and nationalism.
Murdocracy questions the role of the media within capitalist democracy, and the weight of influence that it bears upon its citizens. The Media in all it's forms - commercials, entertainment, current affairs, news etc. - is the most powerful force on the planet, yet it is shaped by individuals immune to democratic processes - like the Emperor's of old.

In this modern age of media bombardment, it is more a case of Murdocracy than Democracy. Long live the Empire!

Die Laughing Collective, May 2006

Tags: urban art, stencil, mass-media, political, action, anarchy

<clipSource>http://www.stencilfestival.com/index.php?categoryid=1&p2_articleid=18&s=c9ae30f5e17ec2a0022f0dd711352de3&</clipSource>

Starbucks Invasion PROTEST

clipped by: benjaminoaks
clipper's remarks: The jam was meant to instigate, to irritate, but to do so inconspicuously. Our target was an upcoming Starbucks Coffee, the fourth on Lincoln Road -- a 7-block pedestrian mall located in South Beach, Miami. Beyond the obvious overabundance of 4 Starbucks within 7 blocks of each other, the site was chosen because of it is a high foot-traffic area, giving us greater possibility of effect. We spray mounted the construction wall directly adjacent to the property with 11" x 17" sheets of paper – together they formed a life size (6 ft. high) silhouette of a man drinking coffee, looking at the “Brewing Soon" Starbucks sign, with a caption that reads "I love a good Starbucks invasion."
