Mashed World has created a number of webcam Google Maps for different countries around the world. The webcams for each map are provided by webcams.travel, who recently had a layer added to Google Maps.

When you roll over one of the webcam map markers on the map a thumbnail appears showing the latest image from the webcam. Clicking on a webcam marker opens an information window with a link to that webcams page at webcams.travel.

The electronic remote shutter release timer for a NIKON D300 project page

All digital cameras have a built in exposure control that limits the longest exposure to be 30 seconds (I keep wondering why that's so).
So when I want to shot a set of bracketed exposures of say 5 images at night, then the cameras internal bracketing process cannot take pictures that expect an exposure of more than 30 seconds. (For the purpose of creating bracketed images, the exposure time is the only value that changes.)

So a set of 5 images could then have the following exposure values (in seconds): 8, 15, 30, 60, 120.
The key is to obtain 5 congruent exposures. This requires that the camera will not be touched while taking the sequence.
Congruent images are required for further HDR (HDR = High Dynamic Range) processing.

Information Architects have released the 2008 edition of their Web Trend Map. The screenshot below is a 500×354 image and looks fuzzy because the original is 6470×4768! However, there is also a fantastic interactive version available at Zoomorama.

External Airbag Protects Pedestrians

Researchers at Cranfield University in England have developed an external airbag they say will significantly reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries in the event of a crash.

The system deploys a hood - or bonnet, as the British call it - airbag at the base of the windshield, which research shows is where a pedestrian’s head is most likely to hit. The system uses radar and infrared technology to “pre-detect” a collision and inflates quickly enough to cushion the impact, said Roger Hardy of the university’s Cranfield Impact Centre.

LIVERMORE, California – It may look like one of Michael Bay's Transformers, but this mass of machinery could soon be the birthplace of a baby star right here on Earth.

Using 192 separate lasers and a 400-foot-long series of amplifiers and filters, scientists at Lawrence Livermore's National Ignition Facility (NIF) hope to create a self-sustaining fusion reaction like the ones in the sun or the explosion of a nuclear bomb — only on a much smaller scale.

Sci-fi-inspired End of Days jokes may follow this historic undertaking like they did for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, but the science behind this advanced laser system is profoundly serious.

Wired.com visited the National Ignition Facility just as the final lasers were coming on line. Read on for a virtual tour of one of the most sophisticated scientific facilities on the planet.

Step 1. Go to google.com and copy-paste the full URL of the web page in the search box along with the inurl: operator (e.g. inurl:www.example.com). Hit enter.

Step 2. Now go to browser address bar (Ctrl+L in Firefox or Alt+D in Internet Explorer) and copy-paste "&as_qdr=y15" at the end of the Google search URL. Hint enter again.

I was on a beach the yesterday with my kids, and I really wasn’t prepared for a hot day. If anything, I felt stupid for giving the kids sweaters. While the kids were playing, the sun burned me up and I didn’t notice. Last night, I looked in the mirror to see some guy with a pink face looking back at me.

Perhaps I should have been wearing one of those wristbands that monitor harmful UVA and UVB rays. Or, I could take it a step further and get a UVSunSense band.

So what makes the UVSunSense different than those other sun-bands? Well, most of those sun bands don’t let you know when you need to reapply your sunscreen.

Here’s how it works in a nutshell. As you put on your sunscreen, you also put a dab of the lotion on the UVSunSense. The band will turn purple in the sunshine, but this color will not last. In fact, the user should take note of when it turns colorless, as it will be time to put on more sunscreen.

First Google Latitude Applications

Google Latitude started as a service that managed to obtain your location and shared it with a group of people, who also revealed their locations. The service was available as part of the mobile Google Maps application or as an iGoogle gadget.

To make the information stored in Google Latitude more useful, you can now display it on a web page, in a feed or add it as a constantly-updated Google Talk status. The location can be added to a badge and embedded on any web page, but there's also an option to get a list of the most recent locations as a KML or JSON feed. Since you may not want to share your precise location, Google Latitude has an option to display the city-level location.

If you only want to share your location with the Google Talk contacts, enable the new location status. The feature "automatically updates your status message with your current city's name as you move".

Researchers hijack botnet, score 56,000 passwords in an hour

The Torpig botnet was hijacked by the good guys for ten days earlier this year before its controllers issued an update and took the botnet back. During that time, however, researchers were able to gain a glimpse into the kind of information the botnet gathers as well as the behavior of Internet users who are prone to malware infections.

Researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara have published a paper (PDF) detailing their findings after hijacking a botnet for ten days earlier this year. Among other things, the researchers were able to collect 70GB of data that the bots stole from users, including 56,000 passwords gathered within a single hour. The information not only gave them a look at the inner workings of the botnet, they also got to see how secure users really are when it comes to online activities. (Hint: they aren't.)

Sub-$2000 Tata Nano is Officially The World's Cheapest Car

India's Tata Nano has been in the works for some time, but pre-orders are starting today with a MSRP of 100,000 rupees (under $2000)—officially making it the cheapest car in the world.

The price jumps up to around $2400 when you factor in the additional costs associated with excise fees, transportation, taxes, etc—but the allure of a car that ridiculously cheap is going to be powerful not only in India, but around the world. That's why the Tata group has plans for releasing a version for the European market in 2011 and North American market beyond that (although those versions will undoubtedly be more expensive).

Of course, you get what you pay for, and $2000 isn't going to buy you even basic luxuries like air-conditioning—but it will get you over 50 mpg. The question of reliability is also an issue, but it couldn't be worse than that gas guzzling beater you are driving around right now could it? [BBC via Jalopnik]

Disappointed that the iPhone OS 3.0 announcement didn’t bring video recording? Sure - you’re not alone. With jailbreak-only applications like Cycorder having been recording videos for months now, many iPhone users are having a hard time understanding why Apple has yet to make it official - or why they haven’t allowed video recording applications in the App Store.

If this latest rumor (#5,432,938 for those keeping track at home) rings true, it might be yet another case of what Apple does best: good ol’ planned obsolescence. According to AppleInsider’s source “who’s proven extremely reliable when predicting changes to the Cupertino-based company’s hardware offerings”, a third revision of Apple’s finest will be announced later this year complete with an upgraded camera.
