Some Women Deserve to be Beaten and Raped a British Survey Says

The British (men and women) really don't like it when women dress provocatively. In a recent survey conducted by the British Home Office, 1 in 7 Brits responded that it was acceptable for a man to hit or slap their wife or girlfriend if she dressed in sexy or revealing clothes in public.

Let's delve a little deeper into the numbers. Fewer Brits responded that it was acceptable for a man to hit or slap a woman if she cheated on him or didn't treat him with respect--two actions most people would agree are more serious offenses, or at least I thought. And don't get me started on the "acceptable in some circumstances but not in others" numbers. And about a quarter of the respondents believe that if a women is raped or sexually assaulted, she is partly to blame if she was wearing sexy or revealing clothing.

Want to stimulate the economy? Decriminalize the cannabis

The decriminalization of marijuana has been a long-held position of mine, and with the recent news of "greatest swimmer ever" Michael Phelps having lost major sponsors and receiving a suspension over pictures of his use of the drug, and the current state of our economy, I am once again drawn to the debate with a renewed vigor.

Having done a little research to find statistics for this article, I came across a bill in Congress introduced by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) in April of last year that I was previously unaware of, but was otherwise encouraged to learn about. I further learned about a report by the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse in 1972, recommending decriminalization of simple possession.

Gas firms 'prop up Burma's junta'

Energy giants Total and Chevron have been accused of propping up Burma's military government through their gas projects in the country.

Rights group Earth Rights International says this has allowed the government to siphon off $5bn (£3bn) in revenue.

The money has reportedly been stashed in banks in Singapore, instead of being used to ease poverty in Burma.

The rights group also accuses Total and Chevron of ignoring forced labour, killings and high-level corruption.

He explained that, in research conducted over a two-year period, sources explained how the Burmese generals kept the money out of the country's budget and stored it in bank accounts in Singapore.

Obama is a Socialist? - This Conservative Meme Needs to be Retired

What an absurd statement. Sen. Graham is probably aware of its absurdity, which leads me to ponder: why would he say such a thing? Of course, he would love us to believe that Obama is responsible for the lowly state of the stock market. I suspect from what he said next on Sunday's Meet the Pres s, Graham's motives for the insinuation were even more misleading.

Graham finished, (emphasis added) "I think the president has quite frankly, in his budget, told us a lot about who he is and what he believes, and it's scary."

The senator should leave such tripe for the conservative pundits who, incidentally, have received far too much press as of late. For that reason they shall remain unnamed in this post.

In 2006, President Bush proudly described the “alternative set of procedures” used on detainee Abu Zubaydah to extract “information that could save innocent lives.” “I can say the procedures were tough, and they were safe, and lawful, and necessary,” Bush said.

During today’s judiciary subcommittee hearing on torture, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) questioned former FBI interrogator Ali Soufan, who led a successful interrogation of Abu Zubaydah. Whitehouse read a portion of Bush’s speech describing Zubaydah’s interrogation, and asked Soufan whether it was an “accurate” depiction. Soufan said it appeared Bush had been told “half-truths,” and agreed with Whitehouse that he then repeated these “half-truths”:

The diplomatic row between Iran and the United Nations Security Council intensified on Saturday when Iranian envoy Ali Asghar Soltanieh told the IAEA that the agency had not provided genuine documents to back up fresh accusations about Iran's nuclear program, and that the matter was "closed".

The accusations are based on Western intelligence reports suggesting that the Tehran government secretly combined uranium processing, airborne high-explosive tests and work to remodel a missile cone in a way that would fit a nuclear warhead.

Could George W. Bush end up behind bars?

It's extremely unlikely, but the Obama administration is taking its first steps along a path that could lead in that direction, with the investigation of Central Intelligence Agency interrogators involved in the war on terror.

The probe will focus on whether interrogators exceeded their instructions and broke the law when, for example, they choked a prisoner until he lost consciousness or threatened another one with a gun and a power drill.

President Obama has said several times he wants to "look forward, not back."

But Attorney General Eric Holder said evidence of abuses was compelling enough to require it. No one knows what other evidence will ultimately compel the administration to do.

European Commission refuses to congratulate re-elected Ahmadinejad

The European Commission made its stance on the disputed election win of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad clear when it released a statement saying that it had not congratulated the Iranian president and had no intention of doing so.

I am as happy as anyone at signs of an economic recovery. But I confess to having mixed feelings about the resurgence of the wing-nut industry.

We now have “The Birthers” manufacturing myths that President Obama was not born in the United States and therefore is serving illegally. These products arrive in my inbox faster than I can press “block sender.”

They are just following the business plan of those earlier entrepreneurs selling the idea that Obama had killed his grandma. Consider the scare-biz Internet scribe who penned the memorable line: “Obama flies to Hawaii to visit his grandmother and just a few days later she winds up dead. Coincidence?”

But now the industry has ratcheted up from accusing Obama of killing his grandma to accusing him of trying to kill your grandma.

Sen. Pat Roberts, a staunch Republican from Kansas, who used it to demonize the regime of Saddam Hussein and to justify the case for the invasion of Iraq.

The Marine Corps wasn’t in Robert’s blood enough to motivate him to make it a career, however, and after fulfilling his four-year service requirement, he left the service for employment in journalism and later as a politician.
