Landlord Sues Ex-Tenant Over 'Defamatory' Tweet

Don't like your landlord? Better not "tweet" about it -- at least not in Chicago.

Horizon Group Management LLC filed a lawsuit Monday in Cook County Circuit Court seeking $50,000 in damages from Amanda Bonnen, a former tenant, according to numerous reports.

The company says Bonnen "maliciously and wrongfully" defamed it when she tweeted to a friend on May 12: "Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay."

Horizon maintains that even though Bonnen had less than two dozen "followers" on her now-closed Twitter account, anyone could have seen her allegedly defamatory comment if they'd searched for her username, "abonnen."

"The statements in the Tweet concerning Plaintiff were and are wholly false," the complaint reads in part. "By reason of the publication of them, Plaintiff has been greatly injured in its reputation as a landlord in Chicago."

Don't worry, company tells users; NSA involved only in security compliance standards

Computerworld - Microsoft today denied that it has built a backdoor into Windows 7, a concern that surfaced yesterday after a senior National Security Agency (NSA) official testified before Congress that the agency had worked on the operating system.

"Microsoft has not and will not put 'backdoors' into Windows," a company spokeswoman said, reacting to a Computerworld story Wednesday.

Echoing earlier concerns, Marc Rotenberg, the executive director of the Electronics Privacy Information Center (EPIC), questioned the wisdom of letting the NSA participate in OS development. "The key problem is that NSA has a dual mission, COMPUSEC, computer security, now called cyber security, and SIGINT, signals intelligence, in other words surveillance," Rotenberg said in an e-mail.

Rabbi 'offered cocaine for sex'

A rabbi financed a drug-dealing business and offered cocaine to girls in exchange for sex, a court heard.

Rabbi Baruch Chalomish, of Upper Park Road, Salford, rented an apartment where he could "relax and have a party", Manchester Crown Court heard.

Police raided the Salford flat and discovered a total of 101 grams (3.6oz) of cocaine and more than £17,000.

Chalomish, 54, admits two counts of possessing cocaine but denies two of possession with intent to supply.

His business partner Nasir Abbas, 54, has failed to turn up for the trial and is being sought by police, the court was told by Michael Goldwater, prosecuting.

He faces one charge of possessing cocaine and one of possession with intent to supply.

Mr Goldwater said police found both defendants at the one-bedroom apartment during a raid on 5 January.

'Commercial supply'

Forms showed that it was rented from the firm Premier Apartments in the name of Mr Abbas.

Cases have been thrown out and doubts linger after last month's decision giving defendants the right to question forensic technicians in court.

WASHINGTON — Until last month, the strongest evidence in drug and drunk driving cases in courtrooms across the nation often was a piece of paper. A crime lab or Breathalyzer report would confirm that the defendant indeed had illegal drugs or a high level of alcohol in his or her system.

But a Supreme Court decision has sent a jolt through that procedure.

Now the prosecution must make a lab technician available to testify in person if the defendant demands it. As a result, some cases already have been dismissed. One state, Virginia, has called a special legislative session to change its laws. And some lawyers think the ruling will continue to have a major effect.

Ford models lead list of safest new vehicles

WASHINGTON — Ford, Subaru and Volks wagen sit atop the insurance industry's annual list of the safest new vehicles, according to a closely watched assessment used by car companies to lure safety-conscious consumers to showrooms.

The Virginia-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded its "top safety pick" on Tuesday to 19 passenger cars and eight sport utility vehicles for the 2010 model year. The institute substantially reduced the number of awards compared with 2009 because of tougher requirements for roof strength.

Ford and its Volvo unit received the most awards with six, followed by five awards apiece for Japanese automaker Subaru and German automaker Volkswagen and its Audi unit.

I do not count myself as one of Jamie Oliver’s army of fans, but after looking at the chirpy chef’s antics through the eyes of an economist, I am starting to acquire a grudging respect for him. Yes, the recipe books are all but unreadable, but his “school dinners” campaign has been surprisingly successful.

Oliver’s mission to persuade schools to serve healthier lunches – and get children to eat them, and stubborn mothers not to stuff chips through the school railings – became a national phenomenon in 2005. Tony Blair and David Cameron fell over themselves to jump on the Naked Chef’s bandwagon, and soon everyone in the country had an opinion on the campaign.

Britney Spears Twitter Account Professes Love for Satan

Britney Spears Twitter account was hacked early this morning and the hacker posted words professing Britney's love for Satan. Here is what Britney's account said this morning:

Glory be to Satan? Not very original but hackers are supposed to be good at getting into web sites illegally, not at penning memorable words of love. The hacker also papered her Twitter account with "dark and twisty images of the Illuminati" according to E online.

In addition the hacker reportedly wrote "I hope that the new world order will arrive as soon as possible! —Britney."

Once Twitter management was informed, the offensive words were taken down and Britney's account was back to normal with the following apology posted on her site:

What do you want to bet that Britney slept through the entire incident?

Central bank, beating Congress to the punch, issues rules to curtail banks' practice of automatically enrolling consumers in overdraft protection programs.

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney.com) -- The Federal Reserve on Thursday released a new rule to prohibit banks from automatically enrolling customers in overdraft protection programs, which charge fees when consumers spend more than they have.

Starting on July 1, 2010, all banks will have to ask their customers to opt in to overdraft protection plans for ATM and most debit card transactions.

Some banks charge as much as $39 when customers overdraw their bank account by even a few dollars.

"The final overdraft rules represent an important step forward in consumer protection," Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a statement. "Both new and existing account holders will be able to make informed decisions about whether to sign up for an overdraft service."

Sixty years ago, the Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear weapon, nicknamed "First Lightning", at a test facility on the steppe of northeast Kazakhstan (formerly the Kazakh SSR). The test site, named the Semipalatinsk Polygon, would go on to host 456 atomic explosions over its 40-year existence. Residents in the surrounding area became unwitting guinea pigs, exposed to the aftereffects of the bombs both intentionally and unintentionally. The radiation has silently devastated three generations of people in Kazakhstan - the total number affected is thought to be more than one million - creating health problems ranging from thyroid diseases, cancer, birth defects, deformities, premature aging, and cardiovascular diseases.
