Suspend NFL Quarterback Michael Vick for Dogfighting!

This week, a federal grand jury indicted NFL star quarterback Michael Vick and three cohorts on felony dogfighting charges.

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick should be suspended from the NFL immediately!

The NFL expressed “disappointment” and said, “We believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts.” That’s just not good enough. The alleged acts were not petty or harmless; they were nothing short of gruesome and barbaric.

Sign the petition to the NFL today, and tell the league to suspend Michael Vick!

Cancer warning on soy foods

CANCER patients are being warned to avoid foods rich in soy because they can accelerate the growth of tumours.

The Cancer Council NSW will issue guidelines today, warning about the dangers of high-soy diets and soy supplements for cancer patients and those people in remission from cancer.

At particular risk are people suffering from hormone-dependent cancers, including breast and prostate cancer - the two most common types of cancer in Australia.

Cancer survivors are also being urged to avoid high doses of soy, as they may be more vulnerable to a relapse.

Research has found high consumption of soy products can also limit the effectiveness of conventional medicines used to treat the disease.

"There is evidence to suggest that women with existing breast cancer or past breast cancer should be cautious in consuming large quantities of soy foods or phyto-oestrogen supplements," a position statement from the Cancer Council says.

"Women with current or past breast cancer should be aware of the risks of potential tumour growth when taking soy products.

An inhabited island has been wiped off the face of the Earth due to global warming, Britain’s The Independent site reported on Sunday.

The remote Lohachara Island was part of the Sundarbans Island Chain near the Bay of Bengal in India. Rising sea levels have swallowed the island whole, according to the report. It was once home to 10,000 people.

Lohachara’s disappearance wasn’t easy to discover. Satellites monitored it until it finally disappeared.

Two-thirds of a neighboring island, Ghoramara, has also been claimed by water.

The disappearance of Lohachara Island comes eight years after uninhabited islands in the Pacific were overtaken. As a result of their going under, the people of low-lying islands in Vanuatu, also in the Pacific, have been evacuated.

Researchers at Calcutta’s Jadavpur University studying the phenomenon for six years say there are now about a dozen “vanishing islands” in the region.

The U.S. media might have missed the significance of the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change, but the public shouldn't miss the message: It's about hope.

If the news in the Stern Review is scary to think about, it's ultimately a message of hope: It's not too late to act on global warming -- provided we take strong, united global action, starting now and increasing over the next 10 years. Indeed, "delay would be dangerous and much more costly," the Review warns. What's powerful about the report is that it positions the issue in easy-to-grasp economic terms. It estimates that acting now to stabilize climate change could cost 1 percent of global GDP each year -- which is relatively manageable -- but not acting could create losses that dwarf that. Likely the losses from inaction, the Review estimates, would reach 5 percent to 20 percent of global GDP year after year, "now and forever."

For politicians who argue that taking action now to reduce global warming emissions is too costly in economic terms, the Stern Review offers a stern rebuke: The real economic damage will come not from action but inaction. And as a measure of the report's economic credibility, it was commissioned by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, was prepared by one of the world's leading economists, Sir Nicholas Stern, and has been endorsed by four Nobel Prize-winning economists plus the president of the World Bank.

The Home Office is considering the possibility of compelling foreign nationals in the UK to register their biometrics.

It said the power would be introduced on a rolling basis and would build on biometric IDs for foreign nationals, which will be introduced from 2008. The policy would target groups such as migrant workers seeking to extend their stay in the UK.

A Home Office spokesperson told GC News that, under regulations due to come into full effect by 2008, a biometric ID is required for people who are applying for a visa to enter the UK, and those living in the country who are applying for further leave to stay. The Home Office is considering extending the requirement to those who have a permanent right of residence.

This would require further legislation in Parliament if the Home Office decides to go ahead.

Biometric ID visas are currently issued at 42 posts overseas. It is planned that by 2008 the process will be in place for everyone outside the Euopean Economic Area nations who are coming to the UK to work, study or stay for longer than six months, plus anyone visiting from the 108 visa nations.

Immigration minister Liam Byrne said: "We're determined that Britain won't be a soft touch for illegal immigration. Compulsory biometric identity for foreign nationals will help us secure our borders, shut down access to the illegal jobs, which we know attracts illegal immigrants, and help fight foreign criminals.

"The technology is already making a difference, stopping illegal immigrants returning to Britain once they've been deported, helping trusted travellers pass securely through our borders and cutting down abuse of the asylum system."

Rice backs 'worthwhile' Iraq war

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has again defended the war in Iraq, saying the investment in US lives and dollars will be "worth it".

Ms Rice said a lot had been sacrificed for Iraq but success would change the entire Middle East.

She was speaking soon after eight US marines were charged over the deaths of 24 Iraq civilians in Haditha last year.

She said: "There have been plenty of markers that show that this is a country that is worth the investment, because once it emerges as a country that is a stabilising factor, you will have a very different kind of Middle East."

President Bush said for the first time this week that the US was not winning the war, but was not losing it either.

Bush lied again on December 14, 2005, when discussing what intelligence was available to Congress, when it voted to support his decision to invade Iraq. Bush lied when he asserted: "Some of the most irresponsible comments - about manipulated intelligence - have come from politicians who saw the same intelligence I saw and then voted to authorize the use of force against Saddam Hussein."

In fact, the Congressional Research Service (CSR) released a report the very next day that exposed his lie: "The President and a small number of presidentially designated cabinet-level officials, including the vice president ...have access to a far greater overall volume of intelligence and to more sensitive information, including intelligence sources and methods." In all, the report identified "nine key U.S. intelligence 'products' not generally shared with Congress."

And Bush lied again, on the eve of the November 2006 mid-term elections, when he said that he wanted Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld to stay on until the end of his presidency. In fact, Bush already had commenced work on replacing Rumsfeld and knew he was lying when he said Rumsfeld would stay on. Bush even admitted to this deliberate deception.

Two days ago, Bush lied again. In a December 19, 2006, interview with the Washington Post, America's Liar-in-Chief was once again put on the spot. According to the Post, when he was asked to reconcile his "absolutely, we're winning" in Iraq assertion of October 25, 2006, with his new assertion, "We're not winning, we're not losing," Bush "recast" his former assertion "as a prediction rather than an assessment."

Bush's Harvard classmates and Professor Tsurumi would have understood all too well: Once a punk, always a punk.

Anti-Torture, Anti-MCA activists and other sympathizers came out Sunday on International Human Rights day to protest and hand out literature against torture and the new Military Commissions Act.

The Military Commissions Act of 2006 was signed into law on October 17, 2006 and strips citizens and non-citizens of their right to appeal their detentions to the U.S. courts if they are held as “enemy combatants”. It also permits secret detentions, sanctions torture, creates immunity for torturers, and prohibits any person from invoking the Geneva Conventions as a source of rights, just to name a few of its outrageous provisions.

Thousands of MCA info cards were passed out to holiday shoppers who walked by “enemy combatants” who were caged in “Guantanamo Square” (a.k.a. Union Square). The activists felt compelled to stage this actions since there has been virtually no coverage from mainstream news of this horrible law which looks amazing like the Enabling Act of Nazi Germany. The Enabling Act gave virtual dictatorial powers to Hitler to kidnap, imprison and disappear his enemies. We feel that this law is America’s version of the Enabling Act and we hope to work to get this repealed immediately.

Congress and the White House has betrayed the American people and the U.S. Contstitution by signing away our rights of habeas corpus. They have also sanctioned torture, which is not only an international war crime but a crime against humanity.

We hope others around the country will see the significance of this law and work to educate and petition the new congress to get this act immediately repealed.

After thousands of years of practice, you might have imagined that every possible means of inflicting pain had already been devised. But you should never underestimate the human capacity for invention. United States interrogators, we now discover, have found a new way of destroying a human being.

In early December, defense lawyers acting for Jose Padilla, a US citizen detained as an "enemy combatant," released a video showing a mission fraught with deadly risk -- taking him to the prison dentist. A group of masked guards in riot gear shackled his legs and hands, blindfolded him with black-out goggles and shut off his hearing with headphones, then marched him down the prison corridor.

Is Padilla really that dangerous? Far from it: his warders describe him as so docile and inactive that he could be mistaken for "a piece of furniture." The purpose of these measures appeared to be to sustain the regime under which he had lived for over three years: total sensory deprivation. He had been kept in a blacked-out cell, unable to see or hear anything beyond it. Most importantly, he had no human contact, except for being bounced off the walls from time to time by his interrogators. As a result, he appears to have lost his mind. I don't mean this metaphorically. I mean that his mind is no longer there.

That the US tortures, routinely and systematically, while prosecuting its "war on terror" can no longer be seriously disputed. The Detainee Abuse and Accountability Project (DAA), a coalition of academics and human rights groups, has documented the abuse or killing of 460 inmates of US military prisons in Afghanistan, Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay. This, it says, is necessarily a conservative figure: many cases will remain unrecorded. The prisoners were beaten, raped, forced to abuse themselves, forced to maintain "stress positions," and subjected to prolonged sleep deprivation and mock executions.
