Police investigating attack during ball hockey brawl

A bench-clearing brawl in which a Hamilton man was kicked in the head at the end of a local ball hockey league game is now under police investigation.

The attack occurred Tuesday night at a privately owned ball hockey arena at Cameron Motorsports complex near Hamilton airport.

Police say a fight broke out just as a playoff game in the new 22-team Hamilton league ended.

"In the course of that brawl, the victim was struck from behind with a hockey stick and subsequently kicked in the back of the head while he was on the ground."

Roberts and several partners built a special ball hockey rink at the Upper James go-cart and paintball complex last October. Since then, his league has grown to 300 players.

Leon's plans for incorporating their "home furnishings for urban spaces" retail showroom at the historic Roundhouse have been given the green light by Toronto's City Planning Division. Have a first look at some of the planned signage and restoration proposed (PDF1, PDF2). I think they've done a decent job of making it fit in with subtlety (and thanks for the tip, Sean).

Harry Stinson is planning a soaring signature building that would become a symbol of Hamilton in the same way the Eiffel Tower is for Paris, or as the Empire State Building is for New York City.

TELLY’S Tony Soprano is to star in a film version of BBC sitcom The Thick Of It.

Tough-guy actor James Gandolfini, 46 – mob boss Tony in The Sopranos – has a leading role in the comedy movie, to be called In The Loop.

He will play a top-ranking general alongside original Thick Of It stars Peter Capaldi, Chris Addison and Paul Higgins.

But there is NO role for disgraced actor Chris Langham, 58, after his six-month jail sentence on child porn charges.

A BBC insider said: “We can’t believe we’ve got James – it’s his first major role since The Sopranos.

“But Chris Langham will not appear in the film, it would be too controversial.”

The film – written by The Thick Of It’s creator Armando Iannucci – will parody the workings of US and British governments.

Filming starts later this month in Britain and Washington.

someone mentioned Hamilton's retail is weird... I agree.

Hamilton loves it's Wal*Mart but won't take transit because that means you're 'poor'.

Hamiltonians will support high-end stores in other cities but not in their own city.

Hamiltonians will travel 300 km to an outlet mall somewhere in PA, or NY to save $3 on a pair of jeans.

Furthermore, those said pair of jeans would be considered 'too junky' in our local market and wouldn't sell.

found out today that the folks behind the Concert Hall are waiting until they complete the reno's at the Gown and Gavel as well as 15 Hess (the collapsed building) before proceeding with the Concert Hall.

LONDON (Reuters) - Found: drinking companions to join elderly gentleman for a friendly beer at his local pub.

Mike Hammond was bombarded with offers after advertising in his village post office for someone to accompany his 88-year-old father Jack on visits to a southern England pub from a nursing home.

He offered the lucky winner 7 pounds ($14) an hour plus expenses and, after sifting through the applicants, decided on a job-share. Drinking duties are to be divided between a retired doctor and a former military man.

"Dad's now going to be going down to the pub several times a week -- three with his new friends and twice with me," Mike Hammond told The Times on Thursday. "I want to give him some of his old life back."

Downtown density will prevail over slums of suburbia

"Most Americans now live in single-family suburban houses that are segregated from work, shopping, and entertainment; but it is urban life, almost exclusively, that is culturally associated with excitement, freedom, and diverse daily life. And as in the 1940s, the real-estate market has begun to react."

Looking back at the postwar conditions that unleashed the explosion of suburbia, it's clear the growth was inspired as much as anything by a desire to escape from the city. Density, associated with danger, disease and decay, was the enemy.

Sixty years later, beset by gridlock, shoddy construction and environmental degradation that can no longer be ignored, density has started to look good again.

Crowded sidewalks tend to be safe and lively, and bigger crowds can support more shops, restaurants, art galleries.
