And according to the latest comScore data, LinkedIn is steadily growing in terms of unique visitors. For September, LinkedIn had 9 million unique visitors in the U.S. compared to 8.7 million unique visitors in August. But it appears that LinkedIn’s growth is mainly attributed to a burgeoning international user base. Worldwide, LinkedIn grew from 18 million unique visitors in July to 20 million unique visitors in August.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/14/linkedin-flying-high-with-50-million-business-users/</clipSource>

Gridiron Live

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

GridIron Live, a Facebook-based football coaching sim that features 3D graphics.

For those that aren’t familiar with the genre: GridIron Live and QuickHit have the same high quality graphics as most modern video games, but they don’t feature the twitch-based gameplay you’ll find in Madden. Instead, you act as your team’s coach, picking plays and watching as your digital players fare against your opponent’s play calling. This can be a bit frustrating at times when something out of your hands goes wrong, but that’s true for any coaching job. And it’s a genre that’s become quite popular, though most of the other coaching sims have been far more basic.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/page/16/</clipSource>

Unique visitors

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/15/whos-scorched-up-comscore-in-september-you-ask/</clipSource>

loopt

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

At TechCrunch, we’ve always been big fans of mobile social networks, particularly on the iPhone. In fact, Loopt, one of the first location-based iPhone apps and social networks to gain popularity, was offered a feature, called Mix, that acts as a social compass that allows people to connect with and learn about others around them. Mix turned out to be such a popular feature that Loopt is breaking the feature out into its own free iPhone app.

Loopt is basically a social-mapping app that allows you to discover the world around you on your mobile phone. Mix was the part of the app that let you meet new people (who also have the app) nearby. You see a list of people, profiles/interests, their latest status, ranked by their approximate distance to you and can message the people who you find compelling. While Mix can be used for any type of connection with users, Loopt’s co-founder and CEO Sam Altman says the feature is primarily used for dating and love connections.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/page/11/</clipSource>

graffitigeo

clipped by: study is being released today which reports that internet users on a whole are becoming more likely to update their statuses online (on social media networks). The report says that 19% of internet users say they use Twitter or another service to share updates
about themselves, or to see updates about others. When Pew surveyed the group in April of this year and in December 2008, 11% of internet users said they use a status-update service.

Updating status online is a learned behavior for most internet users. It’s not something users tend to do naturally but these statistics shows that people are increasingly looking to Twitter, Facebook and other sites to update their status, which is definitely noteworthy. The full report is embedded below.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/page/7/</clipSource>

Sept. ComScore data shows a 6.7 percent jump from August to September in worldwide vistors to 58.4 million (which translates to 949 percent increase from a year ago). The 20.9 million visitors from the U.S., in contrast, has remained flat since June.

These numbers do not include mobile or desktop app usage. But if Twitter hopes to become the first Web service to reach one billion users, it had better speed up its growth. Facebook, which is outgrowing Twitter in the U.S. even on a percentage basis, had an estimated 411 million visitors worldwide in September (up 5.5 percent from August). And Google is at 879 million unique visitors globally, according to comScore.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/page/2/</clipSource>

Feds use yahoo, google paypal logins

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.wired.com

U.S. citizens will soon be able to log in to government websites using their Google account, or the URL of their Yahoo profile. It’s a significant embrace of the open and emerging tech standards the Obama administration promised.

The U.S. government pilot program will allow people to interact with various government websites using an OpenID or an Information Card, the nation’s information technology officer will announce Wednesday. These are two of the most popular emerging technologies that let web users manage their identities across multiple websites.

<clipSource>http://www.wired.com/epicenter/page/2/</clipSource>

teen downloading trends

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.crunchgear.com

There’s a new study that suggests that teens are moving away from illegally downloading music. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that teens are turning to iTunes (or whatever) en masse, but rather is a reflection of the way the Web works in 2009. Music blogs, streaming sites like Imeem and YouTube (note: not all streaming on YouTube is 100 percent legal), applications like Spotify, etc. are increasingly the destination for teens today.

<clipSource>http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/07/13/study-teens-moving-away-from-illegal-music-downloads-toward-streaming-sites-blogs/</clipSource>

tweetfeel

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

The idea is for people to use TweetFeel to run search queries for products, celebrities, companies, brands etc. and thus get a notion of what the average Twitter user thinks of them in a matter of seconds.

TweetFeel evaluates real-time tweets about whatever search term the user has entered for positive and negative feelings, presumably taking into account words like ‘good’, ’sucks’, ‘great’, ’screw’, ‘love’ and whatnot. Search results flow down the screen as they are calculated as positive or negative, and the service offers an overall percentage number to indicate whether the majority of results are one or the other.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/13/tweetfeel-real-time-sentiment-search/</clipSource>

Twitter Stats

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

According to June, 2009 comScore numbers, 11.3% of visitors to Twitter.com in the U.S. are ages 12-17. Internationally, in May, 2009, only 4.4% of visitors were younger then 18.

If you look at technologies trending with teens right now, it’s Apple devices (iPhone, iPod), smart phones (Blackberry, Palm), and then social networks (Facebook and MySpace). At least that’s what I see from hanging out with 1,500 other teenagers in high school every day (I am 16 years old). But why not Twitter? Well, because Twitter is a different type of social network than Facebook. Facebook is about connecting people, and sharing information with each other. The way my friends and I see it, Facebook is a closed network. It’s a network of people and friends that you trust to be connected to, and to share information like your email address, AIM screen name, and phone number. You know who’s getting your status messages, because you either approved or added each person to your network.

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/13/why-teens-arent-using-twitter/</clipSource>

Fonera

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.crunchgear.com

As you recall Fon makes wireless routers for sharing. You install the Fon node in your house, share it with others, and then are given access to other Fonera routers around the world. It’s sort of a viral Wi-Fi community.

Now, however, the Fonera is incredibly more interesting. The device can now access web services without the aid of a computer, allowing you to download torrents and “content” as well as upload to multiple services just by plugging in a USB key. The router also can be used as a webcam or print server and can connect to a 3G or HSDPA node and share the connection over Wi-Fi. It also supports 802.11n and acts as a wireless NAS with remote browsing capabilities. In short, the router just got much smarter.

The router is now basically a small computer. The 2.0 has been in beta since October and has an applications development platform for hackers. The current applications include:

<clipSource>http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/07/14/fonera-gets-upgraded-to-20-adds-built-in-download-and-upload-services-and-other-goodies/</clipSource>

twitter June Stats

clipped by: barakharlan

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

The 20 million U.S. visitors amounts to about half of the 37 million global visitors the site attracted in May

Twitter may not be for teens, but plenty of other people are flocking to the service. After taking a breather in May, when U.S. unique visitor growth almost screeched to a halt, Twitter picked up the pace again in June. According to comScore, in June Twitter.com attracted 20.1 million unique visitors in the U.S., up 14 percent from May.

The resumption of growth isn’t of the sky-pointing variety Twitter experienced earlier this year, but it is a healthy month-over-month rate. Page views hit 628 million, a 21 percent increase over the month before. And these estimates are just for the Twitter Website. As much as half of Twitter’s usage occurs offsite (via desktop and mobile clients).

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/13/twitter-back-on-track-in-june-with-20-million-us-visitors/</clipSource>
