Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also called keyhole surgery (when natural body openings are not used), bandaid surgery, or minimally invasive surgery (MIS), is a surgical technique. Medically, laparoscopic surgery refers only to operations within the abdomen or pelvic cavity. Laparoscopic surgery belongs to the field of endoscopy. It consists of a Hopkins rod lens system, that is usually connected to a videocamera (single chip or three chip), a fibre optic cable system connected to a 'cold' light source (halogen or xenon), to illuminate the operative field, inserted through a 5 mm or 10 mm canula to view the operative field. Additional 5- 10 mm thin instruments can be introduced by the surgeon through side ports. Rather than a 20 cm cut as in traditional cholecystectomy, two to five cuts of 5-15 mm will be sufficient to perform a laparoscopic removal of a gallbladder. The abdomen is usually insufflated with carbon dioxide gas to create a working and viewing space.

A Deep Fried Delicacy: The How-To on Deep Frying Turkey

Deep-fried turkey, a concept that started in the south, is gradually rising in popularity nationwide. It's a perfect twist for barbecues, block parties and holiday feasts. In fact, since deep frying turkey requires special equipment and lots of oil, families and groups of neighbors often get together to share the costs and the feast. To get you started, we have several deep-fried turkey recipes for you. For a deep frying turkey experience that is fun and produces delicious results follow these guidelines:

Location
Place the fryer on level dirt or a grassy area. Never fry a turkey indoors, in a garage or in any other structure attached to a building. Avoid frying on wood decks, which could catch fire, and concrete, which can be stained by the oil.

Frying the Turkey

Once the oil has come to temperature, place the turkey in the basket and slowly lower into the pot.

Whole turkeys require approximately 3 minutes per pound to cook. Remove turkey and check internal temperature with meat thermometer. The temperature should at least 165 degrees F, but preferable 170 degrees F in the breast and 180 degrees F in the thigh.

Turkey parts such as breast, wings and thighs require approximately 4 minutes to 5 minutes per pound to come to temperature.

The oils used to fry turkey are critical to the success of the product.

Oil Selection
Only oils that have high smoke points should be used. Such oils include peanut, canola and sunflower. Peanut oil has abundant flavor and is the top choice of many cooks. Canola oil is low in saturated fats and would be appropriate to combine with peanut oil if fat and cholesterol are a concern.

Giant Carnivorous Centipedes

One such example is the Scolopendra gigantea, a venomous, red-maroon centipede with forty-six yellow-tinted legs. These arthropods are the largest in the world, and they are more commonly known as Amazonian giant centipedes due to their massive size. Adults commonly reach lengths of over thirty-five centimeters– the length of a man's forearm. Not only are these creatures very swift runners, but they are also highly adept climbers, a skill which allows them to scale walls to enjoy some surprisingly ambitious prey.

Centipedes in general are carnivorous, though this term usually refers to a diet of smaller bugs or scavenged remains. The Amazonian giant centipede, however, creeps out at night to stalk even larger victims. With one quick motion the S. gigantea snags its prey and injects an extremely potent venom. But the natural hunter's most impressive skill is that which is demonstrated inside the caves of the Amazon jungle. In an environment completely devoid of light, the centipede scurries across the damp floor, stepping over writhing mounds of beetles to scale the wall and clamber across the ceiling into a position near the center. The giant centipede then grips the stone with it rear legs, allowing its forward segments to dangle into the cave below. Its front section sways as its legs wriggle through the air in search of the intended target: a passing bat.

A band member saw AC/DC on a sewing machine and figured it has something to do with power. He was right, it means 'Alternating Current / Direct Current'. The band didn't realise it was also slang for bi-sexual, which caused a few awkward moments in their early days. A silly rumour claims the acronym 'Anti-Christ Devil's Children'.

Blood tests refute a Brazilian woman's claim that her cat had given birth to three puppies, geneticist Adil Pacheco said on Tuesday.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Brazil's cat-puppy mystery has been solved.

Cassia Aparecida de Souza, 18, from a poor neighbourhood of Passo Fundo in southern Brazil, said last Friday that her cat Mimi had given birth to the three puppies as well as three kittens, which did not survive.

"People who aren't experts often imagine things," said Pacheco, director of the Institute of Biological Sciences of the University of Passo Fundo. "All the facts contradict her."

Pacheco, who was asked by a local newspaper to conduct a chromosome test to check the spectacular claim which gained wide media attention, said mammals sometimes nursed the young from another species.

Big Freeze or Heat Death

The Big Freeze is a scenario under which continued expansion results in a universe that is too cold to sustain life. It could occur under a flat or hyperbolic geometry, because such geometries are a necessary condition for a universe that expands forever. A related scenario is Heat Death, which states that the universe goes to a state of maximum entropy in which everything is evenly distributed, and there are no gradients — which are needed to sustain information processing, one form of which is life. The Heat Death scenario is compatible with any of the three spatial models, but requires that the universe reach an eventual temperature minimum.

Big Rip: infinite time, finite lifespan

In an open universe, general relativity predicts that the universe will have an indefinite future existence, but will approach a state where life as we know it cannot exist. Big Crunch: finite time and lifespan

The Big Crunch theory is a symmetric view of the ultimate fate of the universe. In the United States, Tesla's fame rivaled that of any other inventor or scientist in history or popular culture. After his demonstration of wireless communication in 1893 and after being the victor in the "War of Currents", he was widely respected as America's greatest electrical engineer. U.S. filmmaker describes Iraq imprisonment

Kar was arrested by Iraqi Security Forces and then handed over to U.S. troops. Even though Kar showed his U.S. passport and his Navy veteran's card to the U.S. troops, he was still taken to the notorious Abu Ghraib prison and then to Camp Cropper, where he was thrown into solitary confinement for nearly two months. (Camp Cropper, by the way, that's the same prison where Saddam Hussein is being held) Kar told me American troops referred to him as the "American Terrorist" and nearly suffocated him by putting a hood over his head. Also, he says he was left to bake for hours in a cage in 120 degree heat.

Here is Kar's question: Why did it take the U.S. government and the FBI 55 days (53 of them in solitary) to figure out Kar was innocent? He is now suing U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other high-ranking military officials for violating his civil rights. It's the first case of its kind.

The Pentagon says Kar was "treated fairly and humanely in accord with the Geneva Convention." Kar begs to differ.

Yesterday's CurbedWire report on the surprisingly ubiquitous TV commericals for Long Island City's Arris Lofts that feature elephants and giraffes seems to have hit a nerve. Notes one commenter, "CNBC plays the commercial every hour. First comes the giraffe, then some other company's ad, then the elephant. Personally, I'd rather have a duplex than headroom for a pet giraffe."

I actually managed to tag along on a showing for the Arris Lofts- and you really can fit an elephant into the bathrooms. We saw 1BR with two gigantic full size bathrooms....the Australian lady showing us around really truly said "it's all the rave" when we inquired as to why the 2 mondo bathrooms in a 1BR.
Noticeably absent in the spacious apt was a kitchen??? Which later we were told was to be a small console against the main wall of the living room. Apparently the members of their target market are the kind to eat out on the town. (But, ahem, this is LIC! I live here. We have a few restaraunts and the number is growing...but a kitchen is a necessity if you actually want to eat food regularly.) Gigantic oversized bathrooms which can probably truly hold an elephant, and no actual kitchens. I guess their target market includes hygiene-obsessed anorexics.

Side note, the ceilings are really, really high. Great light. But that's it. What they couldn't ruin, they didn't. Light and location (convenient-near 3 useful subway lines). The elephant and giraffe can probably fit in there, but they'll go hungry.

clipper's remarks: On the one hand I'm glad there's a conference like this for gay youth to talk about their experiences with bullying and harassment in school. On the other I'm frustrated that there's still a need for a conference like this. Maybe that's because of what I went through growing up as a skinny, effeminate, nonathletic, black gay boy in the south, in the 80s, during the Reagan era. (Yeah.I might still have a few scars from that.)

But what's truly disturbing are the people who says that an anti-bullying conference "affirms" the "gay lifestyle," and particularly the woman who said "There's something called therapy. A person can change if they want to, and they should be encouraged to change if they can."

And if they can't or won't? Do they deserved to be harassed? Well, I remember NARTH suggested that it might do them some good.

More than 500 students, educators and youth workers met yesterday at the Westchester County Center to exchange strategies for confronting the challenges gay students face at the eighth annual "Healing the Hurt" conference, which included 26 workshops on issues ranging from organizing a Gay-Straight Alliance, forming healthy personal relationships and using the Internet to find support.

Teachers, guidance counselors and administrators had workshops on subjects that included advising a gay/straight student club and counseling adolescents who are unsure about their sexual orientation.

"If someone had yelled out the 'n' word in the hallway - which would have been appalling - it would have been dealt with right away," ninth-grader Adam Frankel told the morning workshop on intolerance about what life was like as the only openly gay student at Fox Lane Middle School in Bedford. "They would have been brought down to the principal's office. But if it's a homophobic thing, it just isn't given the same respect. That was one of the hardest things for me."

Critics say the events affirm what they call a "gay lifestyle." One critic, Jeanne Sparks of New Rochelle, sent The Journal News an e-mail before yesterday's conference, calling it part of an "educational network (that) is corrupting good morals, assaulting the mores of our culture and undermining the authority of parents." Sparks attended the conference, and afterward said it should have included a workshop on changing from gay to straight.

"There's something called reparative therapy," Sparks said. "A person can change if they want to and they should be encouraged to change if they can."
