Which leads to the second reason people lie: sometimes it works. It’s a gamble, but when it works, wow. Did you lie to your parents about girls, boys, fireworks, drugs, grades, or where you were till 2am on a school night? I sure did and still do. My parents still think I’m a famous painter / doctor / professor in London (shhh), and my best friend still believes his high school girlfriend and I didn’t get it on every time I borrowed his car[2]. Even my ever faithful dog Butch used to lie, in his way, by liberating trash from a house-worth of garbage cans, then hiding in his bed, hoping his lack of proximity to the Jackson Pollock of refuse that was formerly my kitchen would be indistinguishable from innocence.

Methadone Support Org's Sharon Dembinski, MS, RNP, CMA, and the moderator of our Methadone Pregnancy Information site, has recently joined Discovery House, a Rhode Island based Opiate Treatment Provider with 15 clinics in 5 states. Sharon's background as an expert in pregnancy, methadone and the newborn, developer of the Mother's On Methadone (MOM) Program at Kent Hospital in RI... as well as her advocacy work will bring a unique perspective to Discovery House and MMT. Sharon's goal is to work with Discovery House in their efforts to provide excellent, high quality patient care. She will continue to offer education and support to expectant, opioid dependent patients across the country through Methadone Support Org's Methadone Pregnancy Information site and will also continue as coordinator of the MOM Program at Kent Hospital.

Second, there also is a great deal of AA literature available, including helpful manuals on starting and running local groups. Furthermore, Christie, Sweeney, and McGonagle stand ready to answer questions and assist in starting MA groups.

While 12-step program participation may not be uniformly beneficial for everyone, it has withstood the test of time and proved invaluable for a great many. In the final analysis, when asked, "How does MA work?", most group members and MMT staff simply respond, "It works very well."

Yet, some AA members (as well as many NA and CA participants) are not completely accepting of methadone as a medicine. The solution, Christie explains, is that "there are usually many different AA groups in any metropolitan area and MMT patients should search out those in which they feel most welcomed and comfortable."

In 1991, Gary Sweeney, CACAD - Education Coordinator at Man Alive, a large methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) center in Baltimore - was attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting to see a patient receive an "Anniversary Chip" (an award for sobriety time). When the woman expressed her gratitude for how methadone had helped her, she was ordered to return the Chip because the group viewed methadone as just another prohibited drug.

LibriVox, which sounds like a psychotropic drug, is an open-source community committed to converting every book in the public domain into an audio recording. They have plenty, too. They're read by volunteers, but they're quite easy to listen to and they're absolutely free.
