Twitter + Second Life = Spontaneous Web Meetspace

Lately I’ve discovered the benefits of voice in Second Life in its ability to be used as a spontaneous web meetup space. Last Saturday night I noticed that Australia’s answer to Robert Scoble (in a good way) Microsoft’s Nick Hodge was in Second Life chatting to The Podcast Network’s Cameron Reilly via Twitter. I jumped into Second Life to join the conversation, making it the three of us. I Twittered my presence and provided a link. Within 30 minutes three had blown out to around 15 people, or 20 different people over 3 hours. With voice in Second Life we discussed a variety of topics, from Second Life itself, to Web 2.0, politics and the environment.

At the end of my first day, I back out of my parking space and accidentally hit a Lexus parked behind me. Oh great, my first day at work, and I dent somebody's fancy car. I leave a note of apology on the windshield, with my name, email address, phone number, and a promise to pay for whatever repairs are necessary.

The next day, I come to work, and I have a new email message.

From Bill Gates.

Oh my God, I dented Bill Gates' car.

Fortunately, he said not to worry about it.

Hands-on with the O2 (UK) iPhone

O2 is the first network provider to get the iPhone outside of the US, so what's new on the UK's very own iPhone?

Along with the 1.1.1 firmware comes double tap quick access to currently playing songs, options for closed captioning on videos, and rather oddly, user selection options for carrier (we thought this was an exclusive?) There's also support for European language keyboards, and an option for turning off EDGE roaming.

Apple anounced a new line of iPods today and a update to the iPhone which adds the iTunes music store to this wonder gadget.

Apple did it to us once when they first announced the iPhone, they left out the youTube button only to announce it at a later time. Now they have announced that they will be adding the iTunes store to the iPhone, but there are still three spots left on the homepage. Will we be seeing a games button there soon? What else could they be plotting to add. It does look out of place, that new little button there on the bottom of the screen, a little lonely.

A good programmer working intensively on his own code can hold it in his mind the way a mathematician holds a problem he's working on. Mathematicians don't answer questions by working them out on paper the way schoolchildren are taught to. They do more in their heads: they try to understand a problem space well enough that they can walk around it the way you can walk around the memory of the house you grew up in. At its best programming is the same. You hold the whole program in your head, and you can manipulate it at will.

Your code is your understanding of the problem you're exploring. So it's only when you have your code in your head that you really understand the problem.

Bob Marley Estate To Sue Verizon Wireless

The estate of reggae legend Bob Marley has revealed that it will bring suit against Verizon Wireless, after the cellular company announced that it would sell ring tones drawn from the Marley's musical catalog. Verzion asserts that it is acting in a legal and appropriate manner as part of its contract with the Universal Music Group. By contrast, the Marley estate takes issue with the way that the image and music of Marley will be used, which the estate feels amounts to an endorsement (which it has not granted).

BERLIN (AP) -- U.S. computer company Apple Inc. and German automaker Volkswagen AG are discussing the possibility of building an "iCar" that would feature products by the producer of the ubiquitous iPod personal music player.

Apple (Charts, Fortune 500) Chief Executive Steve Jobs and Volkswagen's chief Martin Winterkorn met several days ago in California and plan to meet for further discussions, said Hans-Gerd Bode, a spokesman for VW.

Edwards tells Americans to give up SUVs

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards today said he would ask Americans to give up their SUVs, as he set out his plans to curb carbon emissions.

Mr Edwards said he believe Americans were "actually willing to sacrifice"

"one of the things they should be asked to do is drive more fuel efficient vehicles." When asked if this meant telling voters to give up their SUVs the former senator said "yes".

It now turns out that the editing of Eddie Vedder's speech critical of President Bush during the Lollapalooza webcast has indeed happened on prior occasions

"It's not our intent to edit political comments in webcasts on the AttBlueRoom.com. Unfortunately, it has happened in the past in a handful of cases. We have taken steps to ensure that it won't happen again."

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready responded with an essay entitled "Thoughts of an American."
