Political observers have made much of John McCain's admission that he cannot use a computer without assistance. In a campaign where McCain's opponent is 25 years younger than him, the factoid is potent ammunition for those who argue McCain is out of touch and too old for the presidency. But not knowing your way around a MacBook doesn't mean you can't be president. And McCain's personal Ludditism isn't a deal breaker for tech leaders. "I don't give a damn if McCain ever turns on a computer or not," Michael Arrington, coeditor of the blog TechCrunch wrote in January. "I just want a president who has the right top-down polices to support the information economy."

Lausanne, Switzerland – May 8, 2008 – Many important electronic devices used by people today would be impossible without the use of ceramics. A new study published in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society illustrates the use of ceramic materials in the development of technological devices, including mobile communication and ultrasonic imaging.

Researchers led by Paul Muralt of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology reviewed the field of ceramic materials and explored the critical role that piezoelectric materials play in advancing technology.

Piezoelectric materials are functional ceramic materials that play a special role in telecommunication and ultrasonic imaging since they have the ability to efficiently transform electrical signals into mechanical vibrations, and vice versa.

Piezoelectricity refers to the ability of some materials, notably crystals and ceramics, to generate electricity when compressed.

Microscopic 'Hands'

Professor Chang-Jin Kim, of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, has recently invented a microscopic "hand". The microhand is capable of handling microscopic objects thanks to it's tiny size - only one millimeter wide, making it a potentially invaluable tool for future microsurgery.

Small science has big potential, say scientists

The world's tiniest radio is a step closer to reality.

US scientists have unveiled a detector thousands of times smaller than the diameter of a human hair that can translate radio waves into sound.

According to a University of California team, the study marks the first time that a nano-sized detector has been demonstrated in a working radio system.

Made of carbon nanotubes a few atoms across, it is almost 1,000 times smaller than current radio technology.

Peter Burke and Chris Rutherglen incorporated the microscopic detector into a complete radio system.

They used it to transmit classical music wirelessly from an iPod to a speaker several metres away from the music player.

Full details of their findings will be published next month in the American Chemical Society's Nano Letters.

Technology from inkjet printer cartridges could be used to inject medicines painlessly through the skin from a patch on the arm.

The device uses a system patented by HP to push drugs through tiny needles, which do not go far enough under the skin to trigger pain receptors.

It could potentially deliver many drugs currently injected or taken daily.

More than a year ago, I wrote about the increasing risks of data loss because more and more data fits in smaller and smaller packages. Today I use a 4-GB USB memory stick for backup while I am traveling. I like the convenience, but if I lose the tiny thing I risk all my data.

Encryption is the obvious solution for this problem -- I use PGPdisk -- but Secustick sounds even better: It automatically erases itself after a set number of bad password attempts. The company makes a bunch of other impressive claims: The product was commissioned, and eventually approved, by the French intelligence service; it is used by many militaries and banks; its technology is revolutionary.

Unfortunately, the only impressive aspect of Secustick is its hubris, which was revealed when Tweakers.net completely broke its security. There's no data self-destruct feature. The password protection can easily be bypassed. The data isn't even encrypted. As a secure storage device, Secustick is pretty useless.

Science Daily — Researchers have used the world's thinnest material to create a new type of technology, which could be used to make super-fast electronic components and speed up the development of drugs.

Physicists at The University of Manchester and The Max-Planck Institute in Germany have created a new kind of a membrane that is only one atom thick.

It's believed this super-small structure can be used to sieve gases, make ultra-fast electronic switches and image individual molecules with unprecedented accuracy.

The United States on Friday rejected an international call to abandon the use of cluster bombs, despite an overwhelming support from other countries.

"We take the position that these munitions do have a place and a use in military inventories, given the right technology as well as the proper rules of engagement," said the U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.

McCormack said his country was aware of the "threat posed by the unexploded ordnance to innocent civilians", but revealed that the U.S. was "taking steps to upgrade cluster bombs".
