In an official ceremony in Tehran this week, Mayor Mohammad Baqir Ghalibaf opened a new, sex-segregated park designed exclusively for women's leisure and sport.

In the new park, called "Mothers' Paradise," women can walk, jog, and engage in other athletic activities without having to cover their heads.

Men can reportedly not see inside the park since it is surrounded by green walls and covered by bright-colored materials.

Some Tehran residents welcomed the launch of the park as an opportunity for women to act freely. Many others, however, criticized it as yet another step in what they call widespread discrimination against women.

US confession: Weapons were not made in Iran after all

In a sharp reversal of its longstanding accusations against Iran arming militants in Iraq , the US military has made an unprecedented albeit quiet confession: the weapons they had recently found in Iraq were not made in Iran at all.

According to a report by the LA Times correspondent Tina Susman in Baghdad: “A plan to show some alleged Iranian-supplied explosives to journalists last week in Karbala and then destroy them was canceled after the United States realized none of them was from Iran. A U.S. military spokesman attributed the confusion to a misunderstanding that emerged after an Iraqi Army general in Karbala erroneously reported the items were of Iranian origin. When U.S. explosives experts went to investigate, they discovered they were not Iranian after all.”

The ancient Iranian calendar was a solar calendar. The fact is repeatedly documented in the ancient Avesta writings. One of the most important solar festivals is called Nou Rouz - the New Year. Nou Rouz literally means the 'New Day' and is celebrated on the vernal equinox in spring.

It is the time of rejuvenation in nature, the beginning of a new life and what better time can there be to start the New Year than with nature itself.

Nou Rouz is celebrated by the people of the lands that once formed the Persian Empire, irrespective of their present day political borders or religious beliefs. Nou Rouz according to the Persian mythology is believed to date back to about ten thousand BCE, when Shah Jamshid the Pisdadian king celebrated the first spring after the end of the last ice age.

A man who kissed a woman’s breast on a Memorial University elevator has pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

Farhood Azarsina, 25, of Iran entered the plea Monday in provincial court.
He will be sentenced Thursday.

Azarsina, a PhD student in engineering, admitted kissing the top of the woman’s breast while the two were on an elevator at the St. John’s school on Sept. 27

He apologized on the stand, explaining he acted on impulse.
Azarsina said he didn’t realize the seriousness of the offence in this country.

“For sure, it was a terrible thing to do,” Azarsina said in court.

“Back home, if you do this, they slap you. And if the woman calls the police, the police slap you.”

“Now I understand,” he said. “I know I’m not allowed to touch. It was just a mistake.”

Iran produces anti cancer drug

Iranian researchers at Isfahan Drug Research Center have applied blood cells to produce an anticancer drug named 'porfimer sodium'.

Porfimer sodium generically known as photofrin is a synthetic derivative of hematoporphyrin with photodynamic properties.

Photofrin injections are absorbed by all body cells, including both normal and cancer cells. The drug which is activated after 2 or 3 days, gives normal cells enough time to degrade it.

The laser activation of the absorbed drug by tumor cells, produces oxygen radicals, resulting in cytotoxicity and the destruction of such cells.

When applied in the initial stages it is believed to treat lung, esophageal, stomach and bladder cancers. So far no serious side effects have been reported for the drug.

Today, Iran has become the second producer of porfimer sodium in the world.

TEHRAN - Iran's president was misrepresented by Western media when he was quoted saying there were no gays in Iran, and actually meant there were not so many as in the United States, a presidential aide said on Wednesday.

Addressing New York's Columbia University last month, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad replied to a question about gays in the Islamic Republic saying: "In Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country."

"What Ahmadinejad said was not a political answer. He said that, compared to American society, we don't have many homosexuals," presidential media adviser Mohammad Kalhor said.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Monday afternoon met with a group of Jewish rabbis who gave him a silver grail as a sign of friendship.

The rabbis carried a placard which read, "I am Jewish not a Zionist."
A senior rabbi of the group said that they considered the visit to New York of President Ahmadinejad as an exceptional opportunity and would never forget it

He referred to the Iranian president as a person who made a distinction between Jews and Zionists.

"You understand us and make a distinction between the violent behavior of Zionists and the religious beliefs of Jews," said the senior rabbi who called President Ahmadinejad "a pious man who is seeking to restore peace in the world and has humanitarian plans."

Tariq Ali (TA): Undoubtedly Iran. But then the Americans could not have occupied Afghanistan and Iraq and without Iran’s support. This is what no one likes talking about. Had the Iranians said, if you take Iraq we will fight you, the occupation probably would not have taken place. But the Iranians, who regarded the Taliban and Saddam Hussain as enemies, kept silent. The Americans thought, because the Iranians supported them before they went in, things would be fine. But the Iranians were opportunists. They had their own agenda and defended their own state interests -- just like the U.S. defends its state interests. These state interests are now clashing and so the U.S. is threatening Iran.

IPS: Do you think that the U.S. will now launch a war against Iran to defend its national interests?

TA: I do not believe that the U.S. can launch a new war on Iran because they haven’t the troops.

Every Monday night at 10 o'clock, Iranians by the millions tune into Channel One to watch the most expensive show ever aired on the Islamic republic's state-owned television. Its elaborate 1940s costumes and European locations are a far cry from the typical Iranian TV fare of scarf-clad women and gray-suited men.

But the most surprising thing about the wildly popular show is that it is a heart-wrenching tale of European Jews during World War II.

The hour-long drama, "Zero Degree Turn," centers on a love story between an Iranian-Palestinian Muslim man and a French Jewish woman.

On the surface, the message of the lavish, state-funded production appears sharply at odds with that sent out by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly called the Holocaust a myth.

Iran rapped over child executions

Human rights group Amnesty International has called on Iran to halt the execution of child offenders.

In a new report, it says Iran is the only country to have executed child offenders so far this year.

It lists the names of 71 other child offenders it says are known to be facing the death penalty.

The organisation defines a "child offender" as a person convicted of crimes they committed when they were under the age of 18.

"Only three other countries have executed child offenders in the past three years according to information received by Amnesty International," says Drewery Dyke of Amnesty International.

"In three years, Iran has executed more child offenders than all those other countries combined. It's now the case that as of June 2007, Iran is the only country to have executed child offenders, having executed two in 2007."

"It's a practice that is increasingly out of step with what Iranians themselves expect from their judicial system."
