Catholics complain they are film's main target

America's corrosive culture wars, in which evangelical Christians are never far from the front line, are about to be reignited by a Borat-style take on organised religion.

A new 'documentary' by the man behind Borat - and made using the same hit-and-run techniques - will open in New York at the beginning of next month. Provocatively titled Religulous (think 'religious' and 'ridiculous'), it will mock the beliefs of the world's major religions, recruiting unwitting assistance from the ranks of the faithful.

The project has already inspired protests at its premiere at the Toronto film festival earlier this month, and US satirist Bill Maher and director Larry Charles have been accused of misleading participants. Maher has conceded that several sleights of hand were necessary to persuade people to perform

India opens up to Pakistan film

A critically acclaimed Pakistani film on Islam has been released across cinemas in India.

It is the first Pakistani film to get a wide commercial release in India in over four decades.

Khuda Kay Liye (In the Name of God) focuses on the lives of Muslims after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States.

"It's been long that terrorism has been linked with Muslims and it has become synonymous with the community," Shah said, the Reuters news agency reports.

"It was high time that an answer to this was given to the West... That is the only reason that this film has mostly been made in English, to cater to the western audiences."

"It is a very good movie and more films like this should be made," Bollywood director Madhur Bhandarkar said.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Move over, Dumbo. Horton is now the big elephant in the room.

The computer-animated adaptation "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who!" trampled its rivals at the North American box office on Sunday with weekend sales of $45.1 million, the biggest opening of the year.

The $85 million 20th Century Fox release, which boasts the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, exceeded industry expectations but fell short of the $55.1 million bow of Carrey's previous turn in a Seuss movie, 2000's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

It does rank as Carrey's best start since May 2003, when "Bruce Almighty" set a new watermark for the Canadian actor with a $67.95 million opening. Overall, "Horton" stands at No. 4 on Carrey's all-time list.

Fox, a unit of News Corp, said "Horton" ranks as the fifth-biggest G-rated opening ever

Two titans of the kung fu world Jet Li and Jackie Chan square off in China's most expensive film ever made.

Jet Li, born Li Lianjie in Beijing, started practicing the martial arts, or Wushu, when he was eight. He won several national championships as a teenager before he gained instant fame for his role in the 1982 China-made movie Shaolin Temple. He is now the most paid Chinese actor in Hollywood.

Jackie Chan is arguably the most famous Chinese kung fu movie actor, famous for his comedy-style kung fu fighting. Starting a career from early 1970's, he has played roles in over 100 films.

Li said the opportunity to square off with Chan was a life-long dream come true - for both of them. "After 15 years, we finally have the chance to fight each other. We are very happy. We have some 27 or 28 years of fighting experience and it was easy for us to work together."

Study finds US popular music awash in booze, drugs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - They have lyrics such as "Tequila makes her clothes fall off" and "Breakin down the good weed, rollin' the blunt/Ghetto pimp tight girls say I'm the man."

U.S. popular music is awash with lyrics about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Medical researchers have reviewed the words of the 279 top songs of 2005 to estimate just how common they are.

Their report Monday showed a third of the songs had explicit references to substance abuse. And two-thirds of these references placed drugs, alcohol and tobacco in a positive light by associating them with sex, partying and humor, according to the team led by Dr. Brian Primack of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

It peddles a way to sell entertainment

Amway, the door-to-door peddler of vitamins and soap, wants to reinvent how Hollywood sells entertainment.

The owners of the multilevel marketing company are pouring millions of dollars into a new online store called Fanista - pronounced fa-NEE-sta. The Web site, set to make its public debut this week, will initially sell DVDs and CDs. In the coming months it will add video games, digital downloads and books.

People can use Fanista as a place to shop, but the company said it hoped consumers would join as members - signing up is free - and then recruit their friends.

The carrot: If a friend joins and buys something, identifying you as the reason for joining, you get 5 percent of the sale in cash or credit

“Aliens in America,” which begins tonight on CW, follows in the same tradition except that the wished-for best friend is a Muslim exchange student from Pakistan, not a supernatural creature: something that in the show’s boring, white-bread high school in Medora, Wis., is just as outlandish. It’s a premise that in the wrong hands could be boorish and not at all amusing, so it is to the writers’ credit that “Aliens” is instead fresh, funny and charming in a tart, sardonic way, one of the best sendups of adolescent angst since “The Wonder Years” and “Malcolm in the Middle” (and perhaps even “My So-Called Life”).

Every Monday night at 10 o'clock, Iranians by the millions tune into Channel One to watch the most expensive show ever aired on the Islamic republic's state-owned television. Its elaborate 1940s costumes and European locations are a far cry from the typical Iranian TV fare of scarf-clad women and gray-suited men.

But the most surprising thing about the wildly popular show is that it is a heart-wrenching tale of European Jews during World War II.

The hour-long drama, "Zero Degree Turn," centers on a love story between an Iranian-Palestinian Muslim man and a French Jewish woman.

On the surface, the message of the lavish, state-funded production appears sharply at odds with that sent out by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly called the Holocaust a myth.

First her television show. Then her magazine. Then a Broadway production. Next on the agenda is the Oprah store.

The Chicago-based entertainment mogul will open a retail store near her production studio on the West Side, WGN-Ch. 9 reported this morning.

Fans will be able to buy Oprah merchandise such as an Oprah iPod cover, African-designed baskets and clothes, the station said. Many of the products also can be found on her Web site.

Construction of the store is under way, but there is no word on when it will open.

Actor Morgan Freeman is to play former South African president Nelson Mandela in forthcoming film The Human Factor.

The 70-year-old actor will co-produce the film, which is based on John Carlin's book of the same name.

It is set during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, when Mr Mandela used the country's hosting of the tournament to help heal divisions between blacks and whites.

Oscar-winner Freeman said it would be a "great honour" to play Mr Mandela, 88, who left office in 1999.

My Ninth Annual Overlooked Film Festival opens Wednesday night at the University of Illinois at Urbana, and Chaz and I will be in attendance.

This year I won’t be speaking, however, as I await another surgery.

I have received a lot of advice that I should not attend the festival. I’m told that paparazzi will take unflattering pictures, people will be unkind, etc.

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn. As a journalist I can take it as well as dish it out.
