Remembering the essence of a clipmark

I just wanted to briefly mention a concern that I've had lately. I have recently noticed a lot of public clipmarks that contain entire articles/pages (or most of it). For two important reasons I am hoping this will change.

First, in my opinion, the key distinguishing aspect of clipmarks is that instead of simply posting links to entire web pages, we are clipping and sharing the best piece or pieces of information from within those pages (the "sweetspot" if you will). It is my opinion that clipping too much information substantially reduces the power of the clip as a way for people to quickly toggle through bits of information about all sorts of topics in less time. Basically, when it comes to a clipmark, I think that more information often results in less quality.

The second reason pertains to respecting the rights of content owners. There are many different types of clipmarks that are generated from all sorts of different web sites, so this concern certainly does not apply across the board. But, when small nuggets of information are clipped, they can serve as powerful drivers of traffic to the source of that content. In this way, content creators benefit from having their content clipped. This is fair and good for everyone. But clipping an entire page clearly lessens the likelihood of a click through to the source page because all of the information can be gathered from the clip. This is not the intention of clipmarks and, often times, is not fair to the original source of the content.

I hope the idea of clipping small pieces of information instead of entire web pages is one you will all agree creates a better experience for everyone and shows greater respect for the rights of original content creators.

The national holiday of Thanksgiving is a special holiday which has a beautiful message and is celebrated by all faiths and denominations. In Islam the Quranic term of giving thanks is "Shukr", the recognition of a favor and its acknowledgement. It is mentioned several times in the Quran, and all Muslims are required to apply this attribute of giving thanks in their daily lives.

MASS ANIMAL SACRIFICE SET TO BEGIN

Devotees lined up outside a Hindu temple in southern Nepal at the start of a two-day religious celebration involving the sacrificial slaughter of hundreds of thousands of animals.

Protests have occurred in recent weeks in towns near the Gadhimai temple and in the capital Kathmandu by animals rights activists and other religious groups.

However, Hindu organisers said they would not halt the slaughter because it was a centuries-old tradition.

More than 200,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and pigeons will be killed Tuesday and Wednesday at the temple in the jungles of Bara district, about 100 miles south of Kathmandu.

Chief government administrator in the area Taranath Gautam said tens of thousands of people began lining up in the early hours of Tuesday, and the animal sacrifice rituals had started.

He had trained with Zen masters in Japan, camped with aborigines in Australia and dropped peyote with Native American shamans. He didn't just study religions; he lived them.

In time, Smith became known as the sage of world religion. He introduced the Dalai Lama to the West; befriended mythologist Joseph Campbell and was the subject of a five-part PBS series hosted by Bill Moyers called "Wisdom of the Ages."

But as Smith sat at his daughter's bedside, the wisdom of the ages offered little consolation. "I would sob uncontrollably, crying in anguish," he said.

Sadness is good for the health because it helps people change their lives for the better, a study claims.

Scientists have warned that growing tendency to medicate against sadness like a disease stops us embracing our miserable side and removes the motivation to mature emotionally.

Like the saying "what does not kill me, makes me stronger", being sad and melancholic can leave sufferers better able to cope with life's challenges, more resilient and spur them to greater achievements, it is claimed.

The researchers point out that today's society prizes personal happiness above all else and there is little tolerance for wallowing in despair after losing a job, the break-up of a relationship or the death of a loved one.

But a growing number of mental health experts fear the increasing tendency to take a pill to beat the blues could actually affect human evolution.

COLCHESTER -- Caitlin Dean was raised not to discriminate against others because of their race or religion. But as a white suburban teen of Italian and Irish descent, she often wondered what it would be like to be the target of such abuse.

She found out "behind the burqa."

The 15-year-old freshman volunteered with a few other students to wear traditional Muslim clothing to school for an entire day in February after a Middle Eastern Studies teacher at Bacon Academy announced that she was looking for students to promote her class by wearing the garb. Caitlin covered her slender frame and short brown hair with a periwinkle burqa, which concealed her face.

The hateful and abusive comments she endured that day horrified teachers

"Hey, we rape your women!" one upperclassman said as he passed Caitlin in the hallway.

"I hope all of your people die," another sniped.

Caitlin called it "The Girl Behind the Burqa."

scientists using the Hubble space telescope reported the first sighting with visible light of a planet circling a star other than our own sun. It orbits 25 light years away around one of the brightest stars in the sky, called Fomalhaut.

Isn't that a curious name for a star? Not obviously mythological, it sounds as if it derives from some forgotten French astronomer. Not so; it is, in fact, from the Arabic fum u'l haut, meaning “mouth of the fish”. And Fomalhaut is not alone in having an Arabic derivation - there are well over 100 others, including Betelgeuse, Aldebaran and Deneb. How did the Arabs get to name stars?

The answer, as these two revealing books make clear, is that they once led the world in astronomy. Muslim scientists were mapping the heavens, and pondering our place in them, while Europeans were still gazing at the night sky with baffled awe.

The Islamic religion commands believers to obey the laws of the land they live in, even if it be one ruled by nonbelievers. Muslim jurists consider citizenship (or visa) to be a covenant (aqd) held between the citizen (or visa holder) and the state, one which guarantees safe passage/security (amaan) in exchange for certain obligations (such as obeying the laws of the land); covenants are considered sacredly binding in Islam. The Quran commands:

And fulfill every covenant. Verily, you will be held accountable with regard to the covenants. (Quran, 17:34)

If the American public very wrongly holds American Muslims responsible for the tragedy in Fort Hood, a major problem in my mind is the narrative that Muslims as a community and many well-meaning Americans, including President Obama, have promoted. That is, the concept of the "Muslim world." The idea reached its climax during the President's much vaunted speech to the Muslim world from Cairo earlier in the year. I argued then, that the appellation of a "Muslim world" is facile.

Muslims are as ethnically, socially, ideologically and politically as diverse as any religious group in the world. Of course they share a religious tradition, and will advocate for human rights abuses affecting co-religionists globally. And, of course, as a minority, Muslims in America must work to present a unified voice.

But when we give in to the conception of a monolithic Muslim world crossing national boundaries, then the equation changes quickly.

In San Antonio, Muslims stand with the massacre victims

As Muslims met for weekly prayers in mosques here and nationwide, they underscored their solidarity for the victims of Thursday's rampage at Fort Hood, allegedly by a man whose very name manifests his Muslim heritage.

Muslims have condemned the attack blamed on Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as cowardly and antithetical to core Islamic beliefs and practices, while also issuing warnings to the public and their own communities about the potential for backlash.

Several hundred Muslims gathered in the city's largest mosque, the Islamic Center of San Antonio, where they denounced the shooter's violence and distanced themselves from his version of Islam.

“Most Muslims that do join the Army are Americans first,” he said, “and they're there to protect their country first.”

“I just want to show myself in a positive way for the religion I represent,” he said. “I just hope people don't stereotype.”
