Wedding fashion

In advance of an exhibition of Wedding Dresses in 2011 we are creating a database of photographs of clothes worn for weddings from all cultures between 1840 and the present. We include civil partnerships. This database will provide a rich record and help people date their own photographs.

To ensure we build a useful historical record all entries will provide the year of the event and the names of the bride and groom or partners. The place and the religion of the wedding will be included if possible. We would like you to upload up to three photographs showing the fashions at any one wedding and the principal image should focus on the detail of the wedding dress (or partners' clothes).

In November, Velocibadgergirl (who has the best name on all the Internet, and who I always picture wearing a cape, although the picture is fuzzy because there's a badger involved and I'm never sure where) published this picture on her blog:

I find squirrels inherently amusing, because I should get out more, so I was tickled by this. London doesn't have these signs.

So today I got out more and put a few of these signs around town.

Stuffed Monster Gallery

The 4th and 5th grade class learned a bit about product development when they were given the task to design their own Stuffed Monster plush toy. Some students were influenced by the popular toys they know and love, such as Ugli Dolls, Pokemon/ Yugi-oh trading card characters, and stuffed animals from the current marketplace; still others drew upon their imagination, best-loved pets, or favorite holidays for inspiration. All students made use of textures in their designs, incorporating swatches and written notes with drawings of their monsters from multiple viewpoints. I transformed their drawings into plush toys in early 2009. Each stuffed monster became a portrait of the student’s creativity at this stage of childhood, and all have been sold (back to the parents, naturally!) as a fundraiser for their school.

What is SCADshorts?

SCADshorts is a creative project developed by the Dandy Dwarves and commissioned by the Savannah College of Art and Design. The Dandy Dwarves are a group of students (now alumni) who formed a video production company in 2002 while attending the school.

How to Play

At the beginning of each month a different SCADshorts video is released and it’s up to you to create a fitting, descriptive, and creative S-C-A-D title. For example: “Semi Clothed Angry Doorman” or “Superman Cleans Another Delorean”. The S, C, A, and D words in the title could refer to a place, a character, a situation, or even something that is simply implied. The most creative answer will win a brand new iPod Touch.

Revealing Urban Colours

I started this project while I was working with a New York consulting firm on the power of celebrity. I asked myself whether there was something about, say, Cameron Diaz’s face we could apply to a cellphone or a car that would increase its appeal. I did something similar for the City of Toronto, trying to figure out whether it has a specific colour that could be used by Canadian firms, and it occurred to me that this could be done for all of Canada.

I began by taking scores of photographs and employed computer software to pull out the predominant colours of Ottawa and the provincial and territorial capitals.

For each city, I had to centre on what makes it unique, such as prominent landmarks or distinctive features of its built environment.
