Don't Work All the Time — You'll Live to Regret It

If you rabidly focus on work, in the long run, you'll be unhappy. Ran Kivetz, a professor of business at Columbia University, recently conducted a series of experiments that identified a paradox in our behavior: Doing the "right" thing—putting our responsibilities ahead of momentary pleasures—often leaves us unhappy down the road.

The word for this is hyperopia: an excess of farsightedness. In a 2006 study, Kivetz asked respondents to think about a moment from the previous week when they had to choose between work and pleasure; then he asked them to rate how much they regretted their decision. The amount that people regretted either working or relaxing was pretty much equal. But then he asked a second group to think about a similar moment from five years earlier. This time, people's regret over working was more than double the regret over playing.

Our future selves, it seems, will wish we'd been bigger hedonists. Why?

British army in new Iraq inquiry after boy claims sexual abuse

The Ministry of Defence paid £2.8 million in compensation to the family of Baha Musa, who died in British custody

The Royal Military Police are investigating a new allegation against British troops in Iraq after a 14-year-old Iraqi detained in 2003 with a group of looters claimed he was sexually abused.

The abuse came to light when one of the accused soldiers took photographs of the incidents at Camp Bread Basket and handed them to a shop back in Britain to be processed. A shop assistant called the police. The photographs caused an outcry when they were published around the world.

You could go back to 1813 and the Treaty of Gulistan, under which Persia was forced to concede territory to Russia. The treaty was put together by British diplomat Sir Gore Ouseley and is regarded as a humiliation in Iran.

Britain was also instrumental in setting Iran's borders with India in the 1860s.

Then in the 1920s, British forces in Iran under General Edmund Ironside (later British land forces commander in World War II after Dunkirk) helped put Reza Shah on the Peacock throne. His son was Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the Shah overthrown in the Islamic revolution of 1979, so there is a direct link back to British actions decades ago.

In more modern times, the event that really led to the mistrust of Britain - and the US - was the coup against the elected government of Mohammed Mossadeq in 1953.

During the Iran-Iraq war, which the Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein started, western support for Iraq was deeply resented in Iran.

Michael Scheuer, former CIA analyst and author of the book Imperial Hubris, appeared on Glenn Beck's show to declare, "The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States...only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them."

Jon Stewart was shocked by this statement, and even more so by Beck's insinuation that bin Laden would not strike now because he knew that people like Scheuer and Beck wanted the excuse to act "with as much violence as necessary." Stewart noted the irony in the fact that the profanity he used in reaction to Scheuer and Beck would be bleeped out, but that they could make statements about the need for further terrorist attack with impunity.

With proven oil reserves of around 112 billion barrels and up to another 150 billion barrels of probable reserves, Iraq is the greatest untapped prize for international oil companies.

To put that in context, if Iraq does turn out to have around 300 billion barrels of oil, it will rival the world's biggest producer Saudi Arabia - which has around 160 billion barrels of proven reserves.

So it is little wonder that giant international oil companies are lining up to get back into Iraq after the industry was nationalised in the 1970s and the oil majors were kicked out.

On June 30 major companies - including Exxon, Shell, BP and Total - will gather at Iraq's oil ministry in Baghdad for a two-day meeting to take part in the first bidding round for oil service contracts.

Iraqi objections

Oil workers' unions in Iraq have also spoken out against the contracts.

Israel inflicted "wanton destruction" in the Gaza Strip during its 22-day war on the coastal enclave in December and January, Amnesty International, the London-based human rights group has said.

Accusing Israel of "breaching laws of war", Amnesty said: "Much of the destruction was wanton and deliberate, and was carried out in a manner and circumstances which indicated that it could not be justified on grounds of military necessity."

About 1,400 Palestinians were killed in Israel's Operation Cast Lead, including 300 children and hundreds of innocent civilians, according to the report.

An inquiry conducted by the Israeli military found no evidence of crimes.

Israel has refused to co-operate with a United Nations inquiry currently gathering evidence into the war.
