Beyond Wikipedia: 20 References You Can’t Do Without

This is the first in a 6 part series across the blog Student Help Forum and Scholastici.us: Student Productivity Week. See Part II tomorrow at Student Help Forum.

You may not know this, but there are actually a number of great references available to you that isn’t Wikipedia. Now, don’t get me wrong - I love Wikipedia, too. Whenever I first begin a project I almost always go and overview it through Wikipedia. It’s a great introduction to a subject, also connecting you easily to other related ideas, people and places.

So there we have it. Twenty excellent reference sites that aren’t Wikipedia. And guess what? This is just the tip of the iceberg. You can find excellent resource sites for almost any field or subject imaginable.

If you're sick of seeing "MMS is not a registered protocol" when trying to view streaming content, here's the fix (compiled from a few half-correct or half-clear descriptions from around the net).

I use Debian Linux with the KDE desktop, but this should work so long as you've got Firefox and Kaffeine installed. Mplayer would probably work in place of Kaffeine.

(1.) Open Firefox, type "about:config" (no quotes) in the address window, and click enter.
(2.) Right click on the window and choose <New>, then <String> from the pop-up menu that appears.
(3.) In the first pop-up box, enter: "network.protocol-handler.app.mms" (no quotes, and it might just be easier to cut 'n paste this into the box).
(4.) In the next pop-up box enter the path to Kaffeine (e.g. "/usr/bin/kaffeine").
(5.) Now, click in the main window again but choose <New> <Boolean>
(6.) In the first pop-up box, enter: "network.protocol-handler.external.mms"
(7.) In the second pop-up select <True>.

Accountability – If I did not feel like getting out of bed to go to class, I just skipped. I didn’t need to inform anyone why I didn’t attend. In my job, if I were to feel sick and not show up, I would be out of a job quickly. Also, it is important to communicate with supervisor regarding the status of assigned projects. Since others depend upon me, I can no longer do everything last minute like at college.

Money Management

Taking the Initiative – I remember doing only what I needed to do to get by when I was in college. It was easy doing only what my professors required of me, and often, most students never learned to think for themselves. My boss now expects me to come up with ideas and unique solutions to problems, not just “meeting the minimum standard.”

Strategic Planning – Though I learned study skills in college, I never had a clear plan or strategy for what I was doing or where I was going, other than completing my courses. In the business world, every outcome is measured, every result analyzed. I have learned to formulate strategic plans to accomplish my objectives so that I am more focused and productive.

Các bác sĩ nhấn mạnh rằng thói quen này còn giúp cơ thể nhanh chóng lấy lại cân bằng ngay cả những đêm không được ngủ đủ. Hãy xem thói quen tháng Mười để nhận được nhiều lời khuyên hơn cho giấc ngủ.

Các bước hành động: Hãy chọn ra giờ thức giấc để bạn có thể làm việc cả 7 ngày trong tuần với khoảng thời gian xê dịch cho phép là 15 phút.

Ban đầu, bạn có thể dùng đồng hồ báo thức nhưng cách tốt nhất là tự mình dậy: Trước khi đi ngủ, hãy nghĩ tới thời gian bạn phải thức dậy vào sáng hôm sau. Bạn sẽ ngạc nhiên khi mình thức dậy trước đồng hồ báo thức khoảng vài phút. Bạn sẽ mất khoảng 3 tuần để có được thói quen dậy đúng giờ này.

1. Use IP address - This is the simplest way to bypass domain name based access restrictions. Instead of the domain name such as www.webstuffscan.com use the direct IP address. To find the IP address use one of the free host to IP online conversion tools such as this.

2. Use Google cache - If you are not bothered whether the content is latest on a site, Google cache is best. Do a Google search for the site and then click on the cached link below the search results.

3. Use an Anonymizer - In this method you access a third party site which in turn routes your request to the required server. Some services provide URL encryption also. The problem is that most of these servers are no longer free. Do a google search for the latest list as this is a very dynamic area Following are some services which still works(free!),

Proxify - Hides original URL and provides an array of access of options. The is one of the best free servers.
Block Stop - New guy in the town!
Anonymouse - This works, but URL is visible and hence may be blocked by the filtering software.

4. Use Online Translation Tools - In this method, we can use the translation service as a web proxy. Following are the best links I know of. Again Google is your best friend for more resources.

Altavista Babel fish - In the above replace www.webstuffscan.com with the site you want. You can also visit Babel fish site.
Google Translate - Similar to Babel fish.

5. Use Google Mobile search - Google mobile search works, but output may not be optimal. This is very similar to using a Web proxy.

6. Use a public Proxy server - There are many free proxy servers out in the Web. Note that in order to use these you have to change internet connection settings in Internet Explorer or whatever browser you use. This is one such list.

7. Get web pages via email - This is useful if you need a single Web page. Obviously accessing large files is not possible. Given below are some examples.

How to Use Google as a Dictionary

You may notice occasionally when you're searching for a word, Google will offer a link to Web definitions of your word. This is part of Google's hidden dictionary, a search of definitions on the Web.

Say you'd like to find out what a "clew" is. You could search for define clew, and most of the search results would have some sort of definition. However, this is really just a keyword search, so some of the results might be long articles on clews or only mention the definition in passing.

Define: Your Terms

If you're really only interested in finding a quick dictionary style definition of clew, use the syntax define:. The search in this case would be define: clew. From that search, we can instantly see that a clew is the lower corner of a boat sail.

The information is coming from a variety of dictionary related Web sites, and there's a link to the full entry for each Web site. Google also provides links to related searches, such as "clew bay."

What If You Can't Spell?

If you aren't the best speller or you make a typo, don't worry. Google will still suggest an alternate search, just as it does for regular Web searches. If we type in define: cliw, Google helpfully asks "Did you mean: define: clew."

What If You Want a Thesaurus?

Google's dictionary is strictly a search for definitions on the Web. However, you can find synonyms in searches with Google.

Để có giấc ngủ ngon

Chỉ mất khoảng 15 phút cho tất cả các công đoạn, bạn sẽ đi vào giấc ngủ thật nhẹ nhàng và thư thái.

- Làm sạch mặt trước khi đi ngủ rất cần thiết để loại bỏ bụi bẩn. Sau đó bôi kem dưỡng ẩm giúp da mặt bạn lấy lại sức sống. Đừng quên kem dưỡng ẩm cho cánh tay và cổ.

- Hãy thư giãn bằng cách ngâm chân vào chậu nước ấm pha với một thìa muối thơm khoảng 10 phút, sau đó rửa sạch. Nếu vẫn chưa buồn ngủ, hãy tranh thủ bấm và giũa móng chân, dùng kem giữ ẩm để có một bàn chân mềm mại

- Chất dầu rất cần thiết để giữ cho tóc bóng và mềm mại. Hãy bôi dầu lên tóc qua đêm và gội đầu vào buổi sáng để có kết quả tốt nhất. Làm nóng một lượng nhỏ dầu ô-liu, dầu hạnh hoặc dầu dừa bằng cách đặt nó trong một cái hộp nhỏ rồi ngâm trong nước nóng. Sau khi dầu đã tương đối nóng, dùng dầu mát-xa nhẹ nhàng da đầu 8-10 phút. Để tiết kiệm thời gian, bạn có thể làm việc này trong khi ngâm chân.

- Bôi dầu hải ly (castor oil) lên lông mày và lông mi, đặc biệt là những người có lông mày lông mi thưa. Dầu hải ly sẽ làm chúng mọc dày và dài hơn. Với đôi mắt mệt mỏi và sưng phồng, hãy dùng vài lát mỏng dưa chuột lạnh đắp lên. Hoặc nghiền dưa chuột với nước cà-rốt và quết lên vùng dưới mắt để xóa đi những quầng thâm.

- Cuối cùng, bôi một chút vaseline lên môi. Bạn sẽ đi vào giấc ngủ ngon lành như một đứa trẻ!
