Are you still as excited about the purchase as you were on the day you signed up? If not, ask whether you really need the item in your life or if you are willing to continue paying the monthly or annual fee.

consider your reasoning behind every purchase that you make over $50. Actually a lot.

Here's some guidelines for making your motivation collage:

Keep it simple. Don't try to combine images that send mixed messages. Stick to one theme. So if you're making a collage for your house, stick to things that relate to the inside or outside of the home. Try not to place books or cds or clothes into the collage.

Keep positive. Sometimes, it's hard to put things down on a piece of paper that you want to when you cannot afford it. If you find that you're getting depressed from pasting images. Take a step back and remind yourself that these are things in your grasp and that you'll get them once you attain your goal.

Give yourself permission to play. Get creative and wild. Don't let your rational side tell you that you cannot afford the toys you're pasting on the sheet. Mix and max images with powerful words that also relate to helping you achieve your goal.

I’ve had certainly had motivational dry spells. While I don’t think there is an instant cure to this problem, I’ve noticed that apathy is usually caused by one of two problems:

You don’t have any goals.

You’re working on the wrong goals

Setting Goals to Combat Apathy

If I find myself starting to slip into apathy, I try to reconnect with what I want.

The point of this exercise isn’t to be reasonable. It’s to focus you back on the things that drive you.

Sometimes it takes a few minutes of writing out mild interests before you break into your true desires.

Usually, at this point, it’s a good idea to pick one or two of the idea you’ve written down and set a goal around it. The next step is to write it down, make a plan and set a deadline.

When You’ve Picked the Wrong Goals

even if you don’t finish, your time and energy wasn’t wasted.

even if that time was wasted, it’s gone now, and shouldn’t be factored into the current decision.

The Purpose of a Goal is Motivation

<clipSource>http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/how-to-overcome-apathy-if-you-can-be-bothered/</clipSource>

How to Motivate Yourself Without Hard Deadlines

clipped by: anpl32

Clip Source: www.pickthebrain.com

Set Reasonable Expectations

Would I be able to do this easily, with the encouragement of a deadline? -> If your answer is yes, then the deadline is probably too easy.

Could I accomplish this with a medium amount of effort and motivation? -> If your answer is no, or that you would need a lot of effort to finish, scale back.

If you reward an incredibly hard day of work with an equally hard day, your soft deadlines won’t motivate you. Instead, if you put a slower day (or better yet, a day off completely) after a particularly difficult day, it will keep your energy

Schedule Calibration

The basic idea behind schedule calibration is that you train yourself to always do what is on your to-do list, but no more. As you condition this habit of finishing exactly what you’ve planned, your soft-deadlines become more meaningful.

Tags: motivation, deadlines, lifehacks, todo

<clipSource>http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/motivate-yourself-without-hard-deadlines/</clipSource>

Staying in Synch: Two Easy, Free Solutions

clipped by: anpl32
clipper's remarks: i'll be trying one of these: i have a main desktop, an offline laptop, and a trusty mofo USB drive

Clip Source: webworkerdaily.com

The ones I’m getting the most good use out of now are free synching applications, which allow me to keep entire folders on my computers synchronized with my USB thumb drive.

GoodSync is the easiest to use of the various synchronization applications I’ve found.

You can schedule to do automatic backups, for example, although I happen to use separate backup software for that application.

Easy2Sync has a free version of its synchronization application, and for simple tasks it works fine.

Easy2Sync’s interface relies on wizards so you can set up rules for synching and synch just the files and folders you want.

SyncToy

http://allwaysync.com/ they keep addding features to it. This means giving yourself some downtime before bedtime.

Another test you can use is this. Ask yourself, “If I were to go to bed now, how quickly could I fall asleep?” If you think it would take more than 15 minutes to fall asleep, I say go ahead and stay up.

If you consume caffeine during the day, it’s likely to mess with your sleep cycles.

I recommend getting up at the same time for 30 days straight to lock in the habit, but after that you’ll be so conditioned to waking up at the same time that it will be hard to sleep in.

Tags: sleep, health, howto, lifehacks, sleephacks

<clipSource>http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/05/how-to-become-an-early-riser-part-ii/</clipSource>

How to Become an Early Riser

clipped by: anpl32

Clip Source: www.stevepavlina.com

I go to bed when I’m too sleepy to stay up. My sleepiness test is that if I couldn’t read a book for more than a page or two without drifting off, I’m ready for bed.

When my alarm goes off every morning, I turn it off, stretch for a couple seconds, and sit up. I don’t think about it. I’ve learned that the longer it takes me to get up, the more likely I am to try to sleep in.

If you aren’t sleepy and find yourself unable to fall asleep quickly, get up and stay awake for a while. Resist sleep until your body begins to release the hormones that rob you of consciousness.

So if you want to become an early riser (or just exert more control over your sleep patterns), then try this: Go to bed only when you’re too sleepy to stay up, and get up at a fixed time every morning.

How to Become an Early Riser - Part II.

Polyphasic Sleep,

How to Get Up Right Away When Your Alarm Goes Off.

Tags: sleep, health, howto, lifehacks, hacks, sleephacks

<clipSource>http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/05/how-to-become-an-early-riser/</clipSource>

HowTo: The Meditation Nap.

clipped by: anpl32

Clip Source: www.dumblittleman.com

This is not a sleeping nap, but it will give you the similar feeling of renewal that you get after a short nap. In a nutshell a meditation nap is conscious quiet rest time. Here's how you do it.

Allot approximately 10-20 minutes.

Start by doing a couple stretches, whatever feels good.

Next take 10 deep breaths with eyes closed and sitting upright.

Take the rest of the time to empty your mind of everything. A good way to do this is to mentally repeat one word or phrase such as "empty the mind" or "peace" or "om" or whatever works for you. As thoughts come into your mind, notice them like clouds going by in the sky, but don't grab hold. Just keep coming back to your word.

At the end of your allotted time open your eyes, take another couple deep breaths and stretches. Optional: Lightly place your hands over your eyes during part of the time. This helps eye strain tremendously. You can also try giving yourself a face and head massage.
