Meridiani Planum on Mars, where the Mars Rover Opportunity has been traversing the past four plus years, is not just covered with flat, endless plains. Of course, Opportunity has been entering and studying a few of the craters in the region. Here's a crater in Meridiani that's a whopper

This crater is so large that the HiRISE image is entirely within it, and the crater rim is not visible. The most prominent feature is layered sedimentary rocks that look like a grand stairway. These rocks have been eroded, most likely by wind, or possibly flowing water.

It may take days, weeks, or even years for active volcanoes to unleash their monstrous eruptions of lava and volcanic ash, but a rash of sleeping giants have awakened in recent times, causing death and destruction in their wake. While many have been enthralled with their eerie beauty to get up close and personal to study these imposing events, accessibility is often impossible due to their remote locations or hostile environmental conditions — toss an eruption into the mix, and another level of peril is added to an already difficult and dangerous situation.

Kilauea

An interesting phenomenon seen at Kilauea is “gas pistoning” — gas-driven rise and fall of the magma — caused by accumulation of gas beneath a column of lava, such as in Pu`u `O`o’s crater vents. As the accumulated gas rises, it pushes up the overlying lava (the “piston”). When the gas bubble reaches the surface, it bursts, sometimes as a forceful jet of fume and spatter, and the lava then drains back into the vent.

I recently stumbled on some nice photos of some very interesting looking islands. On further investigation I found that these were the Faroe Islands and that they lie north, north west of the UK approximately 300km from the top end of Scotland and between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea. All of the photos are by Olavur Frederiksen and I highly recommend that you visit his website links at the end of this story to see many more of his photos.

Various species of packrats live in the world's deserts, relying on plant matter for their entire intake of water as well as food. They gather vegetation in their dens, sprinkling the stack with their thick, concentrated urine. Over the centuries these packrat middens accumulate into rock-hard blocks, and when the climate changes the site is abandoned.

Packrat middens are found in the Great Basin, of Nevada and adjoining states, that are tens of thousands of years old. They are examples of pristine preservation, precious records of everything that local packrats found interesting in the late Pleistocene, which in turn tells us much about the climate and ecosystem in places where little else remains from those times.

isotopic analyses of urine crystals can read the record of ancient rainwaters. In particular, the isotope chlorine-36 in rain and snow is produced in the upper atmosphere by cosmic radiation; thus packrat urine reveals conditions far above the weather.

In 1971 a rockhound named Lin Ottinger was leading a field trip in the Big Indian Copper Mine (more recently called the Keystone Azurite Mine) near Moab, Utah, when he discovered major portions of two human skeletons bearing an interesting greenish color. A bulldozer there had recently removed about 15 feet of overburden, revealing the bones and inadvertently damaging some of them.

Marwitt led the remainder of the excavation, describing the bones as resting in loose, poorly consolidated blowsand, in contrast to the consolidated, hard sandstone further from the bones, comprising the host formation at the site. He also indicated that all the bones were unfossilized, that is, not heavily altered or replaced with secondary minerals, and looked essentially modern, other than the greenish staining due to contact with the copper bearing sediments immediately surrounding the bones. Marwitt concluded that the bones were unquestionably intrusive burials, probably only hundreds of years old.

Magnetic Fields Drawings

Flint Weisser, a soon-to-be Pratt minted MFA, created this series of beautiful drawings by capturing the complex interactions of magnetic fields.

Each piece consists of magnets bolted to steel plates and covered with a thin film of nickel particles sandwiched in plastic. The nickel particles act like iron filings to align themselves to the magnets' fields. Weisser created the two works above (1XREFDMG021008 and 1XREFDMGRLCYL) by distorting sheet-magnets' clean lines. His work makes the invisible electromagnetic world visible in glowing lines that look like the Moorish masterpieces at the Alhambra presented on an old IBM 5151 green screen.

Weisser is opening his studio to the public this weekend on Friday, April 25th from 6-10 pm, and on Saturday, April 26th from 2-6 pm. It's studio number 26 at Pratt Institute (200
Willoughby Ave., Brooklyn, NY), in the Pratt Studios building.

Abandoned Wooden Miracles

Some other masterpieces of Russian medieval wooden architecture were found abandoned.

Some of them look like they are just left - even some furniture stays on its places. The reason they are so undisturbed - it stays deep inside the Russian forests.

Houses Covered in Kudzu

Kudzu is a climbing vine introduced into the United States from Japan in 1876 at the Philadelphia Centennial Expo as a forage crop and ornamental plan. In the early 1950s, US Department of Agriculture encouraged farmers to plant kudzu to reduce soil erosion.

Fast forward a couple of decades later, kudzu is a fast growing weed that has infested about 11,000 square miles of the southeastern United States. It costs around $500 million every year in lost cropland and control costs.

Few houses are abandoned and allowed to be taken over by vegetation. However, in parts of the south including the city of Atlanta those that are, are susceptible to being engulfed by kudzu. Some make interesting natural sculptures. Here are 40 buildings and old houses in 52 images which are visible from highways and streets in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.

Soviet Jet Train

In our recent publications we’ve told once about the strange Soviet projects of terrestrial and water vehicles (a train and a ship) with jet engines.

SVL (Russian abbreviation of “high-speed laboratory car”) was developed in Kalininsky carriage-building factory in the far 1970. Based on the train model ER22 (the picture below) it was able to move by means of two engines from the passenger jet Yak-40, installed at the front.

During the tests SVL has gained the top speed around 180 mph. For some unknown reason that tests have become the end of it’s life. Now it’s rusty fragments still can be found in the territory of Kalininsky factory.
