Introduction

The "Rare Book Room" site has been constructed as an educational site intended to allow the visitor to examine and read some of the great books of the world.

Over the last ten years, a company called "Octavo" embarked on digitally photographing some of the world ’s great books from some of the greatest libraries. These books were photographed at very high resolution (in some cases at over 200 megabytes per page).

This site contains all of the books (about 400) that have been digitized to date. These range over a wide variety of topics and rarity. The books are presented so that the viewer can examine all the pages in medium to medium-high resolution.

Woman humped to death by camel

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - An Australian woman was killed by a pet camel given to her as a 60th birthday present after the animal apparently tried to have sex, police said Sunday.

The woman, whose name was not released, was killed Saturday at her family's sheep and cattle ranch near Mitchell, 600 kilometres west of the Queensland state capital Brisbane, state police Detective Senior Constable Craig Gregory said.

The 10-month-old male camel - weighing about 150 kilograms - knocked the woman to the ground, lay on top of her, then exhibited what police suspect was mating behaviour, Gregory said.

"I'd say it's probably been playing, or it may be even a sexual sort of thing," Gregory said, adding the camel almost suffocated the family's pet goat by straddling it on several occasions.

Camel expert Chris Hill said he had no doubt the camel's behaviour was sexual.

The fate of the camel was not known.

Astronomer Michael Brown of the University of California at Berkeley has more bad news for Pluto. Everyone’s favorite former planet, it turns out, is not even the heftiest dwarf. That distinction now belongs to Eris (formerly Xena). Brown’s discovery of Eris in 2003 kicked off the what-is-a-planet-anyway fracas last year at the annual meeting of the International Astronomical Union, which reclassified Pluto as a “dwarf planet.”

It spreads like a virus

The very first incident of a computer attacking its owner was said to have happened in Finland, at the beginning of 2007.

By late April, more and more reports started coming in. This was also the time when the Nokia N95 was officially released.

It soon became clear that with every attack, a Nokia Nseries multimedia computer was somewhere around at the crime scene.

People have since reported attacks of jealous laptops, PCs and desktop computers of nearly every kind of computer brand.

The Healthy Computing Volunteer Group, also known as the HeCoVoG, launches the global warning site jealouscomputers.com on the 1st of july 2007.

Doctors and medical specialists are preparing the first World Conference on Laptop Bites & PC Wounds.

Scientists in Germany are hard at work on an autonomous, pill-bug-like robot to be used to fight forest fires. It's got legs like the little insect, and if the going gets too hot, it can retract them into its body. They'll then be protected by the ceramic casing, which can withstand heat of up to 2,300 degrees.

Trucking along at 12 to 19 mph the bugbots could cover wide areas by being able to get close to the heat without getting burned. In fact, a team of merely 30 of the robots could cover an area as large as 4,400 square miles. With smoke jumping being one of the more dangerous professions out there, it'd be nice to see our forest fire fighters helped out and kept safe by some friendly robots. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Tuesday that rule of Islam on mankind is the only way for salvation of human beings.

"Nations today have no haven but religion," the Iranian president announced, cautioning Muslim nations against enemies' divisive plots.
