What?

This tutorial will attempt to provide a step by step guide for Haskell developers wanting to write GTK+ apps using Glade. We assume you are using Linux, but because the GTK+ toolkit, the Glade Interface Designer and Gtk2Hs bindings are available on other platforms too, this might also help you get started there.

This tutorial page is an adaptation for Haskell and Gtk2Hs of an original tutorial for C and the GTK+ C API.

The first major learning management systems (LMSs) started to appear in the mid 1990s, alongside the growth in popularity of web-enabled applications in general and e-learning in particular. Some were developed from existing classroom-course management systems, but most were new dotcom ventures.

LMSs provide online support for all aspects of an organisation's learning and development efforts, including classroom training.

Many LMSs extend to performance management, providing support for job and employee competency databases; others include content management capabilities (learning content management systems, or LCMSs), which allow an organisation to centrally store all forms of content, from media assets to reference documents to learning objects, and to re-use these in a variety of contexts; further extensions to the LMS include social networking components, providing web 2.0 capabilities within the firewall.

Using Wyse terminals, the district also planned to offer students and staff thin-client desktops running OpenOffice.org. Ericom software – a Citrix alternative -- enabled the terminals to run the district's existing and irreplaceable Microsoft Windows educational applications, including Type to Learn, Reading Counts and Kid Pix.

When Carver arrived, Windsor had an aging Microsoft Windows environment running on 70 Hewlett-Packard and Dell servers spread across seven schools. Upgrades would have meant purchasing more powerful hardware and additional licensing costs totaling $100,000 – far too expensive for their limited IT budget, she said.

With Windows ruled out, Carver decided to standardize on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with thin-client desktops running SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. Novell won out because of what Carver perceived as better support for the thin client desktops she planned to use in the classrooms and faculty areas.

It is a hot summer for the project contractors since the schools must be migrated before September 1, when the new academic year starts. By now, according to the official website of Armada, the consortium that unites the firms involved in the project, the project is slightly ahead of schedule. Moreover, Armada’s CEO Igor Gorbatov expects (Russian) the total number of schools migrated to Free Software to surpass the target number of 1000 (the goal is to migrate 50% schools in the central cities and 20% in the rest of the three regions) so that there may be 2000 or even 5000 schools.

In addition to this news.
One month ago (17 June) Ministry of Education RF invite school from outside of pilot regions, participate in the project. Today 150 schools send the order of migration to Linux.

According of plans approximately 40 000 Russian schools migrate to Linux to end of 2009.

The Armada Company is the main developer of Linux in Russia. It recently won the right to introduce the software in schools.

It believes working with an alternative programme has major advantages.

“Linux could be better for teaching children at school. The programme consists of multiple blocks like LEGO. It's open for everyone to see how it works. And the pupils can even learn how to modify such programmes,” said Igor Gorbatov, Armada deputy general director.

Russia isn't the first to look at this open source operation system as a classroom alternative.

Some schools in India, France and even in the U.S. are already using Linux.

ALT Linux provides full access to PSPO's SDK

ALT Linux has published Software Development Kit which was used to create school Linux distributions.

Now any developer can rebuild, improve and use a set of Linux distributions that are deployed during PSPO pilot project in Russian schools in 2008.

The SDK is available at ftp://ftp.linux.armd.ru/build/ and contains: build environment, CD with scripts and build instructions. The full set includes 7 DVD and 1 CD.

Official shipping of PSPO packages to schools is done by Federal Education Agency (Ministry of Education and Science).

Development of FSS is one of the highest priority tasks that should be accomplished to establish Russia's information security. This is what Russia's president Dmitry Medvedev declared multiple times. Schoolchildren in Russia are to be taught using the free, open-source Linux software in an effort to cut the cost of teaching information technology.

By 2009, all computers in Russian schools are to be run on Linux - which means they will not have to pay for a licence for software, such as Microsoft's Windows.
