EYE SURGEONS IN Holland have found a way to implant tiny pieces of jewellery - in your eyeballs.

Dutch eye surgeons have implanted tiny pieces of jewellery called "JewelEye" in the mucous membrane of the eyes of six women and one man in cosmetic surgery pioneered by an ophthalmic surgery research and development institute in Rotterdam.

The bits of jewellery are about 4mm wide and come in half-moon or heart shapes.

They are put into the eye's mucous membrane under local anaesthetic. It costs between £270 and £540.

'In my view it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of a fun thing and a very personal thing for people,' said Gerrit Melles, director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery. The piece of jewellery is inserted in the conjunctiva -- the mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eyelids and front of the eyeball - in sterile conditions using an operating microscope in a procedure taking about 15 minutes.

Now, doctors are planning the first womb transplant in the United States.

A team based in Manhattan has begun screening women left barren by cancer, injuries or other problems who want a chance to bear their own children.

But the planned operation, which Del Priore and his colleagues could attempt later this year, is stirring objections among some transplant experts, fertility specialists and medical ethicists.

"I think patients deserve autonomy," said Alan DeCherney, a fertility expert.

After performing the complex surgery, doctors would wait, probably about three months, to make sure the organ is functioning. Then, an embryo created through in-vitro fertilization would be placed in the womb. If all goes well, the baby would be delivered by Caesarean section.

Uh Oh, Gmail Just Got Perfect

Google quietly added a small feature to Gmail this week called Mail Fetcher. When that feature launched, Gmail became perfect.

Mail Fetcher allows users to access non-Gmail email accounts from within the Gmail interface. If you have a Yahoo email account, and a work email account, etc., you can simply access that email from within Gmail, using POP settings. Gmail will now work in a very similar way as Outlook does on the PC desktop.

A COMMON parasite can increase a women's attractiveness to the opposite sex but also make men more stupid, an Australian researcher says.

Human infection generally occurs when people eat raw or undercooked meat that has cysts containing the parasite, or accidentally ingest some of the parasite's eggs excreted by an infected cat.

About 40 per cent of the world's population is infected with Toxoplasma gondii, including about eight million Australians.

Until recently it was thought to be an insignificant disease in healthy people, Sydney University of Technology infectious disease researcher Nicky Boulter said, but new research has revealed its mind-altering properties.

"Infected men have lower IQs, achieve a lower level of education and have shorter attention spans. They are also more likely to break rules and take risks, be more independent, more anti-social, suspicious, jealous and morose, and are deemed less attractive to women.

"On the other hand, infected women tend to be more outgoing, friendly, more promiscuous, and are considered more attractive to men compared with non-infected controls.

"In short, it can make men behave like alley cats and women behave like sex kittens''.

The mice were more likely to take risks that increased their chance of being eaten by cats, which would allow the parasite to continue its life cycle.

Rodents treated with drugs that killed the parasites reversed their behaviour, Dr Boulter said.

Another study showed people who were infected but not showing symptoms were 2.7 times more likely than uninfected people to be involved in a car accident as a driver or pedestrian, while other research has linked the parasite to higher incidences of schizophrenia.

How Many Condoms Can You Wear at Once?

The Experiment
Some of you may have heard of the practice of “double bagging” – wearing two condoms during sex for extra protection (something not recommended by most condom manufacturers) . Taking this idea to its ultimate extreme, we set out to answer the question “How many condoms can you put on your dick?” However, since we were unable to find anyone with a penis willing to undertake this assignment, we had to settle for answering the question “How many condoms can you put on a dildo?” The answer: a lot. Hundreds. Tons. Or at least a couple of pounds worth. See what happened as we layered on the latex.

The Process
We began our experiment with a bare dildo and a box of bulk condoms. The condoms were Durex “Natural Feeling” unlubricated condoms, regular size and thickness. The dildo used was a rubber Doc Johnson realistic dildo with suction-cup base, which is 7 ½” in length from the base to the tip.

The first 100 or so condoms went on quite easily, and added about two inches of length to the dildo. When unrolling the condoms onto the dildo, we made every effort to eliminate any air pockets in the condom tip. However, after 200 condoms had been applied, it became obvious that the condoms’ reservoir tips were stacking up, giving the dildo a distinctive, missile-like shape.

Piling Them On
By the time we reached the 300 condom mark, the dildo had become so top heavy it could not stand upright unsupported. Only the suction-cup base kept it from toppling over altogether. As we kept adding condoms, the length of the dildo continued to extend, while its girth at the widest point began to approach the diameter of a soda can.

Self-Healing Mice

Researchers have discovered a unique strain of mouse that can regrow body parts without any scarring. They hope this could lead to new therapies for people. This ScienCentral News video explains.

The strain, called the Murphy Roth's Large (MRL), is commonly used as a model to study autoimmune disease. "This mouse was generated approximately 40 yrs ago and this ability to regenerate happens to be a property of that strain of mouse," says Heber-Katz. She speculates that the capability could have emerged by chance after generations of breeding and inbreeding.

In further experiments, these so-called "healer mice" also regrew tissue in the tail, the optic nerve of the eye, the toes, and even the heart. "After an injury to the heart in the healer mouse, the heart, after sixty days, recovers completely," she explains. "Whereas our control mouse shows severe scar formation and very little healing."
