The Palace of Westminster and the Bank of England have been exposed as among the country's least energy efficient public buildings by a new law to measure carbon dioxide emissions from the national estate.

Around 18,000 buildings, including town halls, museums, schools and job centres, are being tested to discover their energy efficiency on a sliding scale where A is the best and G is the worst. Parliament and the Bank both scored a G. Together, they consume enough electricity and gas to pump out 21,356 tonnes of CO2 a year, the equivalent of more than 14,000 people flying from London to New York.

Now that you have your buttonhole sewn you have to cut out the middle.

Turn your fabric to the wrong side and pull the needle thread through to the back. (Do this by giving the bobbin thread tail a little pull, the needle thread should poke through. Use a pin to pull it all the way through to the back.) Tie the bobbin and needle threads together and clip the ends.

The first step is to mark where the buttons will go.

Next- thread a small eyed needle with a (roughly) 36 inch length of thread and tie it's ends in a knot, so you have a doubled 18 inch length of thread.

This project by Catherine Bourdon for example is a perfect integration of form, function and environmental concerns. In a very personal and sensitive approach to material this project is a perfect answer to the life cycle analysis approach in package design where the box follows the product and assist it in all its stages of life. In this case, the envelope that includes the dirt and seeds, transforms itself into a germinator. Once the plant has started to grow, it can be put to ground with the box that will disintegrate and feed the plant.

Kitchen One

The paneling of the cupboards for this kitchen is made out laser-cut plywood, an industrial leftover from a company specialized in die-cutting cardboard for the packaging of luxury-goods. The wooden boards were used as punching-plates for punching out the shape of unfolded boxes from larger sheets of cardboard.

We had to extract the razor-sharp knives from the slits before being able to saw the boards. This is a project of Lionel Devlieger in collaboration with Eric Van den Broucke.

Basic Play Dough Recipe

2 cups water
1 cup salt
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups flour
to add color: 1-4 teaspoons food coloring or liquid watercolor

In a large pot, begin with the water, coloring, oil, salt, and cream of tartar. Begin gently heating over medium-low to medium heat. When this mixture is warm, add the flour and mix well. Don't worry if it is slightly lumpy. Keep stirring as the mixtures thickens into a dough. You will know it is ready when the dough is pulling away from the sides of the pot and forming a ball. Remove the warm dough from the pan, let it cool a bit, then it's ready for playing! This is my kids' favorite time to play with the dough -- when it is still warm!

You will need:

Scissors
Newspaper
Spindle

1) Take a full sheet from your paper and fold in to about fourths

2) Cut half inch strips along the width of this folded paper.

3) Create a “lead” with your first strip by twisting it up tightly with your fingers.

4) Wrap the lead around the base of your spindle to begin the process.

5) Use the spindle to continue twisting the paper in the same direction you began. When you get within about 4 inches of the end leave it untwisted so that your can splice the next strip together.

6) The next strips twists together with the last via the “tail” of the prior strip.

7) Keep rockin and rollin like this until you get to a desired amount of yarn baby!
