Google pushes into online video ads

Google on Thursday will launch a new advertising technology that will allow publishers to incorporate text ads into online videos in a move long awaited by the industry.

The launch marks the search group’s most ambitious attempt yet to make money by selling ads that appear inside of online video clips. It comes nearly 18 months after Google acquired YouTube, the world’s biggest online video site, for $1.65bn.

Under the new system, advertisers will pay to have their messages appear inside of online videos across the web.

Google’s video ads will take one of two forms: banner ads, which will run at the top of the video screen, and “overlay” ads, which will be inserted on top of videos as they play. The ads will be selected based on the content of the video and the web pages on which they appear.

Google’s entry into the market could be a new phase of development for the fast-growing internet segment.

Magnavox released the Odyssey, the world's first home video game console, in 1972 -- and failed to change the world. In 1976, Fairchild Semiconductor unleashed a console of its own, the Fairchild Channel F, which also sort of withered on the vine.

Then, in the fall of 1977, Nolan Bushnell* and Ted Dabney, two entrepreneurs whose company, Atari, had already made a big splash with the game "Pong," put forth a stout little box they called the Atari VCS, for Video Computer System. The VCS -- later renamed the 2600 for the system's catalog number, CX2600 -- sold for $199, and initially had a library of 9 games. It was an instant success, selling 250,000 units within a matter of months, and bringing home video games to the masses.

And thus the 2600 belongs to history. On Thursday the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, named the Atari 2600 as one of the newest members of its National Toy Hall of Fame.

Status: False.

Origins: This is one of a series of videos that hit the Internet in mid-2007, all of them showing UFOs over various cities around the world, including Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic:

They're digital creations which, according to the Los Angeles Times, were put together by someone identified only as "Barzolff" in connection with a feature film project:

The 35-year-old Barzolff is a professional animator who attended one of the most prestigious art schools in France and has a decade of experience with computer graphics and commercial animation.

The movie Barzolff is working on for the big screen is about two guys who create a UFO hoax so realistic that it spirals out of their control. "For better or worse," said Barzolff, who cited being "overwhelmed" by the response to his video as one of the reasons he didn't want to go public with his name.

A couple authorities say were so obsessed with the Internet and video games that they left their babies starving and suffering other health problems have pleaded guilty to child neglect.

Michael Straw, 25, and Iana Straw, 23, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts each of child neglect. Each faces a maximum 12-year prison sentence.

Viloria said the Reno couple were too distracted by online video games, mainly the fantasy role-playing "Dungeons & Dragons" series, to give their children proper care.

"They had food; they just chose not to give it to their kids because they were too busy playing video games," Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Police said hospital staff had to shave the head of the girl because her hair was matted with cat urine. The 10-pound girl also had a mouth infection, dry skin and severe dehydration.
