Father of India's Green Revolution Prepares for Evergreen Revolution

In the early ‘60s, India grew 12 million tons of wheat every year. Starvation was rampant and the country imported much of its food. Swaminathan, an agricultural geneticist, developed new strains of high-yield wheat for his country and the programs that led to an India that exports food. Today, India grows some 70 million tons of wheat and has become the world's second-largest wheat producer.

He says that today India has reached a plateau in production and productivity because a problem of under investment in rural infrastructure.

His M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture & Rural Development follows a pro-nature, pro-poor and pro-women orientation to a job-led economic growth strategy in rural areas through harnessing science and technology for environmentally sustainable and socially equitable development.

Army tests James Bond style tank that is 'invisible'

New technology that can make tanks invisible has been unveiled by the Ministry of Defence

In secret trials last week, the Army said it had made a vehicle completely disappear and predicted that an invisible tank would be ready for service by 2012.

The new technology uses cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto a tank.

The result is that anyone looking in the direction of the vehicle only sees what is beyond it and not the tank itself.

A soldier, who was at the trials, said: "This technology is incredible. If I hadn't been present I wouldn't have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun."

He said the only drawback was the reliability of the cameras and projectors.

But he added: "The next stage is to make the tank invisible without them - which is intricate and complicated, but possible."

Wayan Volta, an expert on using technology to promote economic development, said the original $100 price tag was unrealistic, and the low figure has damaged the credibility of the development.
I was thinking, and it is no doubt happening to a point, that with the short life span of a laptop and P.C.s in the west, purely through the introduction of a more advanced model, there would be great scope for the scrubbing and recycling of laptops, as opposed to them becoming toxic waste. They could use linux.

A computer developed for poor children around the world, dubbed 'the $100 laptop', has reached a milestone. Its price tag is now $200.

The One Laptop per Child Foundation, founded by Professor Nicholas Negroponte of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has started offering the

white machines in lots of 10,000 for U$200 apiece on its website.

It is unclear when the machines will be ready for customers, as the website says version 1.0 of the software that runs the machine will not be ready until 7 December

Africa waiting for net revolution

Africa's internet users are among the minority

More than a third of Africa's citizens should have access to broadband internet by 2012, a conference of technology leaders is set to hear.

Fewer than four out of 100 Africans currently use the internet, and broadband penetration is below 1%.

"If you have just 1% of broadband access today you have 99% of opportunity.

One of the biggest problems facing internet development in Africa is a lack of interconnectivity. More than 70% of internet traffic within Africa is routed outside the continent, driving up costs for business and consumers.

"Africa has to create the opportunities; Africa doesn't need charity," he said.

OnStar has announced a bold new technology that can activate at the request of law enforcement and bring a high speed chase to a rapid halt by disconnecting the accelerator of a stolen vehicle.

OnStar’s new Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is being hailed by police and emergency responders as a major safety tool that will help save lives. Nintendo To Spend Over $17 Million On Wii Jackets

Don't say Nintendo never gave you nothin': the company's plan to send free no-slip Wii remote jackets to customers around the world will cost over $17 million, the Asahi Shimbun reports today.

Nintendo anticipates that it will send out 20 million of the cushioned silicone slipcovers to Wii owners in Europe, Japan, and the US. Consumers can request up to four of the jackets per Wii console on their region's official Nintendo web site.
