With the United States the target of anti-war demonstrators' anger, France's President Chirac has declared that despite his differences with the US, he still loves the country. And when you look at it, there are hundreds of things the US has done for us.

With London peace protesters toting effigies of President George Bush and placards lambasting the United States, Prime Minister Tony Blair has warned of the dangers of anti-Americanism.

Even France's Jacques Chirac - a one-time Harvard student and forklift driver at a US brewery - has said his fierce criticism of Washington does not lessen his fond regard for America as a nation.

Has the current tide of anti-Americanism blinded many to the United States' many positive contributions?

Zittrain thinks we're seeing the end of the freewheeling Internet and PC era. He calls the technologies of today "tethered"

items like iPhones or many brands of DVR -- they're sterile to their owners, who aren't allowed to build software that runs on them. But they're generative to the companies that make them

worse than plain old sterile technologies. They allow for abuses undreamed of in the IBM mainframe era.

Zittrain's solution to the tethering problem is to encourage the existence of

people who work together to create open, untethered technologies and information repositories. They are the force that pushes back against companies that want to sterilize the Internet and turn it back into something that spits information at you

this is a good start, but there are a lot of problems with depending on communities

to fix a system created by corporate juggernauts

companies can create an incredibly oppressive tethering regime while still allowing users to think they have control.

Ever find yourself sitting in front of a computer that's been locked down by an overzealous IT administrator who won't let you install any software or even open Internet Explorer or Firefox? If that PC is running Windows XP, there's a good chance you can still visit Download Squad (or other sites if that sort of thing appeals to you).

All you have to do is launch a Windows application like Calculator, and then click the Help button. Under Help, click "Help Topics," which will bring up a help window. Next, all you have to do is right click on the title bar and select "Jump To URL." Now you can type in any web address you like, but make sure to include "http://" at the beginning. Basically what you're looking at is Internet Explorer 6 inside a help window, but this version of the program isn't quite as smart as IE6. It won't automatically add the http:// for you. And of course, there's no bookmarking feature.

Ask.com Puts a Bet on Privacy

Ask.com is betting it will. The fourth-largest search engine company will begin a service today called AskEraser, which allows users to make their searches more private.

Ask.com and other major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft typically keep track of search terms typed by users and link them to a computer’s Internet address, and sometimes to the user. However, when AskEraser is turned on, Ask.com discards all that information, the company said.

Ask, a unit of IAC/InterActiveCorp based in Oakland, hopes that the privacy protection will differentiate it from more prominent search engines like Google. The service will be conspicuously displayed on Ask.com’s main search page, as well as on the pages of the company’s specialized services for finding videos, images, news and blogs. Unlike typical online privacy controls that can be difficult for average users to find or modify, people will be able to turn AskEraser on or off with a single click.

China says moon pictures not faked from NASA

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has dismissed Internet gossip that its first photo of the moon taken from a lunar orbiter might have been plagiarized from NASA, local media said on Monday.

The country launched its first lunar probe, the Chang'e 1, in October and released a photo featuring a patch of grey moon surface splotched with craters last week, hailing the mission as a "complete success."

But some Chinese Internet users have questioned its originality after comparing it with an almost identical lunar image from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2005.

"There is absolutely no forgery," Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist for the lunar probe, told the Beijing News.

"But a careful examination will tell some small differences," Ouyang said.

There were two craters on a certain spot of the Chinese photo, but there was only one on that same spot of the American picture, the Beijing News quoted him as saying.

Brazil to give Amazonian tribes Internet access

Brazil will offer free satellite Internet connections to indigenous tribes in the Amazon according to a report from Reuters. It says that the plan will help reduce illegal logging by enabling natives to monitor and report on illicit activities.

"It's a way to open communications between indigenous communities, former slave villages, coconut crackers, river fishermen and the rest of society," said Environment Minister Marina Silva in a statement. "These communities are the true protectors of their areas."

The initiative will bring Internet access to 150 small communities in the Amazon and other remote parts of Brazil. The federal government will not provide computers -- this will be up to state and local governments.

Separately the Brazilian government has ordered more than one million low-cost laptops from the One Laptop Per Child initiative. It is unclear whether any of these laptops will end up in the hands of children in these communities.
