Over the years, data on the larger role dogs play in health has trickled out from various corners of the world. One Japanese study found pet owners made 30 percent fewer visits to doctors. A Melbourne study of 6,000 people showed that owners of dogs and other pets had lower cholesterol, blood pressure and heart attack risk compared with people who didn’t have pets.

animals improve health at least in part by lowering stress.

some dogs seem to have an innate ability to detect impending seizures.

ordinary house dogs could identify breast and lung cancer patients by smelling their breath.

dogs contribute to our health

any dog owner already knows the benefits of their relationship with their pet.

Tags: adopt, a, shelter, pet

<clipSource>http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/08/the-healing-power-of-dogs/</clipSource>

Selfish Capitalism and Mental Illness

clipped by: abailart

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

By far the most significant consequence of "selfish capitalism" (Thatch/Blatcherism) has been a startling increase in the incidence of mental illness in both children and adults since the 1970s. As I report in my book, The Selfish Capitalist - Origins of Affluenza, World Health Organisation and nationally representative studies in the United States, Britain and Australia, reveal that it almost doubled between the early 80s and the turn of the century. These increases are very unlikely to be due to greater preparedness to acknowledge distress - the psychobabbling therapy culture was already established.

An average 23% of Americans, Britons, Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians suffered in the last 12 months, but only 11.5% of Germans, Italians, French, Belgians, Spaniards and Dutch. The message could not be clearer. Selfish Capitalism, much more than genes, is extremely bad for your mental health. But why is it so toxic?

Tags: mental illness, culture, economics, human values, capitalism

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,2234337,00.html</clipSource>

Massachusetts Increases Fines for the Uninsured

clipped by: JoeyGallo667

Clip Source: thehealthinsuranceblog.wordpress.com

The new increase is an aggressive attempt to push residents to purchase health insurance. The fines create a financial burden on the residents of Massachusetts to purchase health insurance. Since the beginning of 2007, about 300,000 have purchased health insurance to avoid the fines. The state estimates between 370,000 and 500,000 still remain uninsured. The newly adjusted campaign to pressure individuals to purchase health insurance will surely increase the number of insured within the state. The penalty will now become a greater financial burden than the cost of health insurance. The original plan was created by the Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney and how now been drastically increased. The plan may upset many people in the state but the benefits will outweigh the costs in the long run.

Tags: health, insurance, healthcare, care, fine, mass, massachusetts

<clipSource>http://thehealthinsuranceblog.wordpress.com/</clipSource>

World Aids Day warning

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: There is also a fear of complacency with the numbers falling.

Clip Source: english.aljazeera.net

Experts and activists are using World Aids Day to press home the message that the world cannot relax in its work to

Recent statistics from UNAids, the UN umbrella body overseeing the global campaign, show that the number of people with the disease peaked in the late 1990s.

Last month, the body also reduced its estimate of the worldwide figure of people living with HIV or Aids from nearly 40 million to 33 million.

"Many of the effects reverse in the two hemispheres."
Professor John Eagle, a psychiatrist at Aberdeen University who has studied the relationships between season of birth and mental health, added: "The two main culprits are diet and the seasonal fluctuations in nutrition, and the increase in infections during the winter."
Astrologers have seized on the findings as evidence that the stars influence personality. But scientists insist there are biological reasons behind the effects.

Clip Source: www.smh.com.au

ASTROLOGY may usually be dismissed as harmless superstition, but

The findings, based on the largest national survey on substance use and health, were reported today by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), the source for this report, defines a major depressive episode as a period of two weeks or longer during which there is depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure and the presence of at least four other symptoms that reflect a change in functioning. These include problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration and self-image. Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday.

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

"These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people," it said.

Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.

"People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns

shoddy or dangerous goods made for both domestic and foreign markets.

Tags: imports, china, hair, disease, trade

<clipSource>http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071113/hl_afp/chinahealthcondomsoffbeat_071113034834</clipSource>
