I love America. And I have to say I love Americans too. I feel the need to say this because as a New Zealander living overseas I often hear about what a friendly nation we are and how we’re always happy to help people out and ‘lend a hand.’ But here’s a news flash, so are Americans – incredibly so and in my view they’re a lot more friendlier than your average Kiwi.

I know of no other country whose citizens are continually held to account for what their leader does. Certainly no-one has ever bailed me up for the actions of our prime minister or abused me because of our country’s presence in Afghanistan. (Truth be told in the whole time I have been away I have never seen any news of New Zealand in the New York Times or any other media.) Yet I am still welcomed with open arms by just about everyone I meet in America.

I’ll miss the sheer energy and optimism of Americans, their utter belief in the attainability of the American dream, and their kindness.

God bless America.

With the United States the target of anti-war demonstrators' anger, France's President Chirac has declared that despite his differences with the US, he still loves the country. And when you look at it, there are hundreds of things the US has done for us.

With London peace protesters toting effigies of President George Bush and placards lambasting the United States, Prime Minister Tony Blair has warned of the dangers of anti-Americanism.

Even France's Jacques Chirac - a one-time Harvard student and forklift driver at a US brewery - has said his fierce criticism of Washington does not lessen his fond regard for America as a nation.

Has the current tide of anti-Americanism blinded many to the United States' many positive contributions?

I love America.

I love every concept the Statue of Liberty stands for – that individual liberty is held above the objectives of government – that, as Washington and Jefferson said, America imparts good will toward all and threatens no one – that this country is so big-hearted and prosperous it can welcome people from all over the world fleeing oppression or poverty.

I love the Bill of Rights – the most noble document ever written to define the limits that government should obey.

I love the concepts of free speech, absolute privacy and religious freedom embodied in our traditions and our Constitution.

I love the rule of law – the right of accused persons to confront their accusers, the right to an attorney, the right to remain silent, the right to refuse admission to government officials wanting to enter your home or office.

They are a direct cause of America's prosperity, of our security, of what makes America attractive to so many would-be immigrants.

I love America, because I can express my contempt for the powers that lord over beauty, life, happiness and survival as though they were entitled to whatever they wanted.

I love America because my grandfather (rest his soul) had the opportunity to build a house, a home and a family that he enjoyed with great pride until the last breath left his body. America provided him with the tools to do that, and still provides people the tools to do the same today.

I love America, because despite what our leaders have done around the world, it is still the dream destination for so many people who want to make comfortable, safe lives for their families and will do anything in their power to come here. It is humbling to know that right now someone in this world is crossing a "border" and will begin the realization of his or her dream.

I love America because there is always hope. Always.

I love America because it's where I've had Iranian rosewater syrup ice cream and Indian cardamom ginger ice cream too. America feeds me vegetarian kung pao chicken, rich Ethiopian stews, and Boca Burgers with organic tomato slices, fat and juicy and salt-and-peppered. I love the food of America. It is the best of the whole wide world.

I love America because there are so many voices here.

I love America because it offered a home to my immigrant mother, gave her a place to raise her children.

I love America because there is a festival here for every conceivable occasion,

I love America because it describes every aspect of my identity, humanity, and complex ideology.

It is a beautiful place and I am deeply honored to have been born here.

Like a kid who hates ice cream, Debbie and Andrew Keeble discovered a newborn piglet on their farm with a highly unusual character trait - she's scared of mud.

The North Yorkshire couple was at a loss when their tiny porker refused to get her hooves dirty.

They soon came up with a solution ripped straight from the pages of a children's book. They realized that a pair of rubber booties from a Paddington Bear toy "fit the young porker's tiny trotters like a glove," they told British paper the Daily Mail.

Using his considerable influence to rein in the reflexive and poisonous antiwar rhetoric that has become the Democratic party’s standard rallying cry against Republicans, he would seek to alleviate the bitter divisions that plague our country.

Unfortunately, Sen. Obama has not been that kind of candidate. Instead, he has chosen the far easier path of exploiting the existing currents of public opinion for political gain. In his speeches, he downplays the gains achieved through the surge and dismisses as “spin” all evidence of progress, all the while repeating his call for a withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops within sixteen months of becoming president, no matter the conditions on the ground.

Even worse, Sen. Obama’s rhetoric on the Iraq war is beginning to jeopardize his stated goal of repairing alliances that he claims are in tatters.

Obama for years accused President Bush of stubbornly refusing to acknowledge changing realities in Iraq. Today, however, Sen. Obama is the stubborn one.

In May 2008, the number of American soldiers killed in Iraq was the lowest since the beginning of the war.Meanwhile, Sunni Arab countries like the United Arab Emirates are finally sending ambassadors to Baghdad; the Iraqi army has proven that it is capable of defeating Shia militias in battle; and oil output has risen to its highest level since early 2003. Additionally, in an important sign that Iraq’s political system is functioning, the country’s parliament recently passed a comprehensive law against oil smuggling that will help increase the Iraqi government’s revenues from the sale of oil.

Sen. Obama has billed himself as a truth-telling leader who is above partisan politics and who will do what is right even when politically inconvenient. That kind of leader would adapt his rhetoric to reflect the successes achieved in Iraq.
