McCain pledged to keep taxes low for families and employers, putting himself squarely in Ronald Reagan’s camp and offering to extend the long prosperity wave started by the Gipper over twenty-five years ago. In contrast, McCain charged Obama -- who gave his economic speech on Monday -- with proposing the single-biggest tax hike in the entire post-WWII period.

Completely unlike Obama, McCain is saying you can’t have capitalism without capital. And he recognizes that investors must have high after-tax returns in order to take risks and fuel entrepreneurial activity. On this point, think high-risk energy technologies for clean coal, natural gas, oil shale, and nuclear and cellulosic power.

McCain repeated his plan to reduce the corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 35 percent.

Genetics, social conditions and culture all may play a part in the rise of human intelligence levels around the world. But the best method of determining why some people are smarter than others is still being debated.

For most of the last century it was widely thought that intelligence was in decline. The idea was that those at the lower end of the intelligence spectrum were having more children, thereby reducing the general intelligence level. Then one day in 1984, James Flynn, a New Zealand-based moral philosopher, had a Eureka moment that turned cognitive science upside down.

Flynn found that in both the developed and developing worlds, IQ had improved in the 20th century at the remarkable rate of three points per decade. This development has since become known as the ‘Flynn effect.’

One of the key environmental factors, Flynn says, is the adult-infant ratio: The more adults there are to children, the richer the cognitive environment.

With the United States the target of anti-war demonstrators' anger, France's President Chirac has declared that despite his differences with the US, he still loves the country. And when you look at it, there are hundreds of things the US has done for us.

With London peace protesters toting effigies of President George Bush and placards lambasting the United States, Prime Minister Tony Blair has warned of the dangers of anti-Americanism.

Even France's Jacques Chirac - a one-time Harvard student and forklift driver at a US brewery - has said his fierce criticism of Washington does not lessen his fond regard for America as a nation.

Has the current tide of anti-Americanism blinded many to the United States' many positive contributions?

I love America. And I have to say I love Americans too. I feel the need to say this because as a New Zealander living overseas I often hear about what a friendly nation we are and how we’re always happy to help people out and ‘lend a hand.’ But here’s a news flash, so are Americans – incredibly so and in my view they’re a lot more friendlier than your average Kiwi.

I know of no other country whose citizens are continually held to account for what their leader does. Certainly no-one has ever bailed me up for the actions of our prime minister or abused me because of our country’s presence in Afghanistan. (Truth be told in the whole time I have been away I have never seen any news of New Zealand in the New York Times or any other media.) Yet I am still welcomed with open arms by just about everyone I meet in America.

I’ll miss the sheer energy and optimism of Americans, their utter belief in the attainability of the American dream, and their kindness.

God bless America.

House Republicans want the American people to know that right now -- around 60 miles off the coast of Key West, Fla. -- China is drilling for oil, thanks to a lease issued by Cuba.

1,200 miles north of Key West, Democrats in Washington are blocking the United States from conducting its own environmentally-safe oil and gas exploration in similar U.S. coastal areas,

"Do congressional Democrats actually believe China has more ingenuity and more concern for the environment than the United States?"

Republicans are pushing an energy plan that would expand domestic oil exploration and production; encourage the opening of new American oil refineries; and invest in alternative energy sources such as wind, nuclear, and captured carbon dioxide.

I love America.

I love every concept the Statue of Liberty stands for – that individual liberty is held above the objectives of government – that, as Washington and Jefferson said, America imparts good will toward all and threatens no one – that this country is so big-hearted and prosperous it can welcome people from all over the world fleeing oppression or poverty.

I love the Bill of Rights – the most noble document ever written to define the limits that government should obey.

I love the concepts of free speech, absolute privacy and religious freedom embodied in our traditions and our Constitution.

I love the rule of law – the right of accused persons to confront their accusers, the right to an attorney, the right to remain silent, the right to refuse admission to government officials wanting to enter your home or office.

They are a direct cause of America's prosperity, of our security, of what makes America attractive to so many would-be immigrants.

Canadian grocers not pulling tomatoes

Canadian retailers are also buying Canadian as they continue to stock tomatoes for their customers."

Canadian grocers will not be pulling tomatoes from their shelves unless advised to do so by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, an industry association said Tuesday in response to the salmonella scare in the United States.

“As of today, in our ongoing discussions with CFIA, there are no illnesses reported in Canada related to this outbreak in the U.S.,” the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors said in a statement.

“Our industry will continue to monitor the situation and take action as prescribed by health authorities,” said the organization, speaking on behalf of major Canadian grocery retailers.

A number of major restaurant chains in Canada have followed the lead of U.S. restaurants and pulled tomatoes from their menus as a precautionary measure, although U.S food and drug authorities have not reported any contamination in tomatoes grown and harvested in Canada.

clipper's remarks: What is the Democrat’s plan? So far, none of their energy legislation has added one ounce of oil to supply the needs of Americans. However, they have had plenty of ideas to RAISE gas taxes (here, here and here) and gas prices even higher.

Republicans HAVE a plan that would lower gas prices. But thus far, House Democrats have refused to allow the “No More Excuses Energy Act” to come to the floor for a vote.

What are Democrats afraid of?
