Situated in Kata Tjuta National Park, it is the world’s largest monolith

Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) is a large rock formation in central Australia, in the Northern Territory. There is something totally awe-inspiring about Uluru.

A huge monolith, 862.5 metres above sea level, 1395 km south of Darwin and 465 km south west of Alice Springs, rising out of the desert. Uluru, which means ‘great pebble’ in the Aboriginal language. Uluru is a 3.6km-long rising 348 metres above the surrounding countryside. It has an area of 3.33 sq. km and a circumference of 9.4 km.

Uluru is notable for its quality of changing colour as the different light strikes it at different times of the day and year, with sunset a particularly remarkable sight. It is made of sandstone infused with minerals like feldspar (Arkosic sandstone) that cause it to give off a red glow at sunrise and sunset.

It is sacred to the Aborigines and has many storied springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings.

Monuments are like inselbergs in that most are isolated outliers of plateaus.

Unlike inselbergs, whose shapes are conical or pyramidal, monuments tend to have vertical sides.

Outstanding examples of tall, massive, steep-sided monuments, resulting from erosion of thick, nearly horizontal beds of sandstone, can be seen in Monument Valley, Arizona.

If the beds are tilted or folded, or otherwise internally inhomogeneous, the isolated erosional remnants show these characteristics by their less regular shapes, and they do not resemble a true monument. The distance of a monument from the parent plateau ranges from meters to kilometers.

Monuments are the result of external erosion by running water and mass wasting, and of weathering along joints and other fractures within flat-lying sedimentary rocks, generally in a plateau. Erosion gradually separates sections of the plateau from its parent mass. As weathering and erosion continue to shrink the margins of the plateau and detached outliers

clipper's remarks: Before pencils, Maestre was originally building with nails and a liquid rubber-type glue. She started to worry about inhaling all the toxic fumes, however, and began to experiment with different techniques until she settled on beading. Her method of choice? The peyote stitch.
#3 In Watchtower, Maestre focuses on a more architectural form. Peer inside and you'll see a series of pencil struts spiraling up like a staircase in a tower.
#4 Maestre was originally inspired by the push-pull reaction she had to sea urchins.
#5 Hive is one of Mastre's unintentionally more suggestive sculptures. "Certain viewers find it a little obscene," she says. "Maybe because I used the pink eraser ends to outline the orifices." (OK?)

I was overjoyed to have one of my own. Furthermore, my other totemic college books — “Speculum of the Other Woman,” “Reading Black, Reading Feminist” and “Sexuality in the Field of Vision” — could go out of style, maybe; the O.E.D. was forever. Wasn’t it?

Lexicographical Longing

When I was 19, my father gave me an Oxford English Dictionary, the 1971 compact edition with the 1987 supplement. Citations for every English word since the eighth century were crammed into three bulky volumes of minuscule print. I hallucinated before the speckled onion-skin pages until I discovered that the dictionary came with a magnifying glass.

That Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, Complete Text Reproduced Micrographically, I realize now, represented real magnanimity on the part of Oxford University Press. Until then, the O.E.D. could run to 13 volumes, suitable only for an antiquarian with plentiful shelf space and a feather duster. The compact dictionary, which people like my dad received free from the Book-of-the-Month Club, made showoff etymology accessible, affordable and even stashable for the first time in modest American rec rooms and dens. The first color wheel has been attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, who in 1706 arranged red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet into a natural progression on a rotating disk.

The First Color Organization Systems

Gautier’s color-printed picture accompanied one of his many anti-Newtonian publications about color theories. The band of color at the center imitates an illustration in Newton’s Opticks but “proves” Gautier’s assertion that all colors cannot be found in Newton’s spectrum of light.

It was a daunting request. The family was too poor to pay for expensive prostheses. The travel alone to an equipped clinic would be too expensive. Her father is unemployed and ill.

So Falcon, who admits he wasn't sure about the Iraq war, wasn't sure he was making a difference, decided he'd get Shahad her legs.

He went to his commander, to his chaplain, to anyone who would listen. The quest was frustrating and took months of pleas. He threatened to walk away from the Army if he couldn't give Shahad legs.

BAGHDAD — Staff Sgt. Luis Falcon , 38, was patrolling the streets of Baqouba , north of Baghdad , when he saw Shahad Abbas . The 11-year-old girl was in a large decrepit wheelchair, and the stumps of her legs where her calves should have been were crusted with dried blood.

Falcon couldn't just walk on, so he stopped to talk. He came back the next day and the day after that, then every day for six months, bringing her toys, gauze for her legs, a new wheelchair. Anything she asked for he would bring.

In a war that Falcon no longer really understood, Shahad became his mission. So when she asked for legs, that became his mission, too.

On Friday his dream and hers came true, just three weeks before he's scheduled to leave Iraq . Shahad was fitted with prosthetic limbs in a U.S. military-funded clinic in Baghdad that normally provides artificial limbs for wounded members of the Iraqi security forces.

"We created a bond, and I didn't need a translator to interpret the bond we had," Falcon said.

In the Komi-Permyak Autonomous Area you can visit the summit of Spasskaya Mountain, where you can get a good view of a group of columnar rocks separated from the cliffs. Not far from this colonnade, at the very base of the mountain, is a small cave in the form of an oven. Inside is a lake with a constant water level. Ice formations remain intact in the cave even on the hottest summer days.
