Toddler Found Drunk Released From Hospital

The girl was admitted to the hospital last month with two fractures to her left arm and bleeding on the brain. Her blood-alcohol level was 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit for motorists in Kentucky.

Police in Covington and Elsmere are investigating. Authorities said suspects include four adults who had access to the child during the 12 hours before she was admitted to the hospital.

There have been no arrests.

NEW ORLEANS -- Life support kept a baby breathing Tuesday morning after she was beaten, burned and drugged, according to police. By Tuesday afternoon, the child was still in critical condition

police received a 911 call around 1:30 a.m. Monday from a babysitter who said the baby wasn’t breathing.

Investigators said they examined Nelson at the hospital and found evidence of severe child abuse.

the child had suffered blunt force trauma and head injuries consistent with being beaten by a fist. He said Nelson had also been burned repeatedly, and had been forced to swallow some kind of prescription medication similar to Xanax.

"No armed or masked suspect was involved at any incident at the victim address," Boone police said in a news release.

Matthew Haney said he came home and startled the man, who was in his apartment.

"As soon as I saw the gun I ran," Haney told WXII's Jermont Terry.

"He turns around and he has a gun in his hand and as soon as I see the gun I turn tail and run to my car and I turn my car on," he said. "He comes sprinting out of my apartment and goes down into the woods."

NDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A former suburban Kansas City woman who faked the birth of sextuplets has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Sarah Everson, 47, and her 35-year-old husband, Kris, were living in Grain Valley in March 2006 when they concocted the story to tap the generosity of neighbors.

They were sentenced in August 2006 to four years probation and ordered to pay more than $3,000 in restitution.

But warrants for the couple were issued after they missed restitution payments and several probation violation hearings.

Her husband was sentenced last month to three years in prison.

ATLANTA -- A judge denied bond Monday for an Atlanta mother who faces charges after her two-month-old was killed in a crash.

Police said Lytanza Robinson, 20, was driving on a street shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday when her car hit a utility pole. An investigator said the child was sitting in the woman's lap.

Atlanta police spokesman Eric Schwartz said the infant died en route to the hospital.

Robinson suffered minor injuries, police say

Robinson has been charged with first-degree homicide, vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license and seat belt violations.

Man Plans Battered Husband Defense In Wife's Slaying

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man who admitted killing his wife plans to argue that he was a victim of battered husband syndrome.

Spradley fatally shot his wife, Nikki Henderson, 29, inside their apartment in 2006.

"Ray took the gun away from Nikki. Nikki took the gun away from Ray. Ray took the gun away a second time and then fired 11 times at Nikki Henderson," said Jack Crawford, Spradley's attorney.

Police reports indicated Spradley had called authorities four times to tell them he was being beaten.

Henderson was arrested once in a domestic battery case, which was referred to a diversion program

"We believe that given the circumstances and the fact that there had been other instances of violence between the two persons committed by her -- we think the evidence will show that he took the only course of action available to him under the circumstances," Crawford said.

Man Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI On Lawnmower

ADRIAN, Mich. -- A man was charged with drunken driving after going through two bottles of wine, cutting through a snowstorm on his lawn mower and riding down the center of the street to reach a liquor store, authorities said.

Police found Frank Kozumplik, 49, homeward bound on a John Deere tractor Saturday night, toting four bottles of wine in a paper bag, officials said.

He told officers that his wife had taken their car to work, and that the mower was the only way he could reach the store, two miles from home.

His blood alcohol level was 2 1/2 times Michigan's legal driving limit of 0.08 percent,

They arrested him and confiscated the mower.

A mother and her fiancée said in jailhouse interviews Monday night that they don't know how her 11-month-old boy might have consumed alcohol, which led to their arrests.

Investigators said the boy, Korbin, drank enough alcohol to become legally drunk,

Authorities said the boy's blood-alcohol level was 0.118 percent, above the legal limit to drive, which is 0.08 percent.

"I hate what happened to the baby and I hate the situation that I'm in," Williams said. "I'm telling the truth. The baby didn't leave with no alcohol in the system like that. The baby was fine, walking, pretty little baby. Everybody loved him."

Fire Department Burns Down

PICKERING, Mo. -- Fire officials are blaming a propane space heater for the blaze that destroyed a northwest Missouri fire department.

A board member of the Pickering Fire Department in Nodaway County said the building is a total loss, and at least $100,000 worth of fire trucks and equipment burned up.

Fire Department board member Charles Smith said the city will be covered through a mutual aid agreement with nearby departments.

Smith said insurance won't cover all of the damage, so the board will look for donations and grants to rebuild.

Disorder turning anchor's skin from black to white

DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- Lee Thomas' skin is betraying him.

His once brown, even complexion is now mottled with pale patches around his eyes and mouth, along his nose and on his ears; his arms, shoulders and chest are speckled and blotched.

"I'm a black man turning white on television and people can see it," says Thomas, an anchor and entertainment reporter for the local Fox Broadcasting Company affiliate. "If you've watched me over the years, you've seen my hands completely change from brown to white."

Thomas has vitiligo, a disorder in which pigment-making cells are destroyed. White patches appear on different parts of the body, tissues in the mouth and nose, and the retina.

"There is no cause. There is no cure, and it's very random," Thomas says. "I could turn all the way white or mostly white."

As many as 65 million people worldwide have the disorder, including up to 2 million in the United States.

Student Arrested After Cutting Food With Knife

An elementary student in Marion County was arrested Thursday after school officials found her cutting food during lunch with a knife that she brought from home, police said.

The 10-year-old girl, a student at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala, was charged possession of a weapon on school property, which is a felony.

According to authorities, school employees spotted the girl cutting her food while she was eating lunch and took the steak knife from her.

The girl told sheriff's deputies that she had brought the knife to school on more than one occasion in the past.

Students told officials that the girl did not threaten anyone with the knife.

The girl was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Mom Seeks to Withdraw Guilty Plea in Son's Starvation

Durham — Sentencing for a woman who starved her son to death has been postponed until January.

Amber Dowen, 22, pleaded guilty on Sept. 17 to second-degree murder and felony child abuse. Dowen and her husband, Richard, were making a freight delivery in Durham in August 2005 when they asked a deputy for help in getting their 4-year-old child, Randy, to the hospital.

An autopsy showed he died of malnutrition, dehydration and complications from pneumonia. The autopsy also said the boy weighed nearly 19 pounds at the time of his death, which is half of what a boy should weigh at that age.

Amber Dowen told Superior Court Judge Ronald Stephens Wednesday that she wanted to withdraw her plea. She said she had inadequate legal representation and felt she had no choice but to plead guilty.

Orlando Police Officers Deliver Baby, Arrest New Dad

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Two Orlando police officers helped deliver a baby on the side of the road early Wednesday. Channel 9 went looking for the new father and found him in jail.

Charles Allen flagged down police early Wednesday morning to ask for help, after making a wrong turn, on the way to the hospital. Two police officers helped deliver the baby, but they had other plans for dad.

Allen is the proud father of a newborn baby boy and celebrated by spending the day in jail. Allen got lost while frantically trying to drive his pregnant wife to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

After the child's birth, police discovered Allen had warrants for his arrest and took him into custody.

Allen was arrested on warrants related to failure to appear, child support and leaving the scene of an accident charges. Police said law requires them to arrest anyone when they learn they have warrants out for their arrest.

Highway Patrol Trooper Arrested On Suspicion Of DWI, Kicking Police Officer

RALEIGH -- A Highway Patrol trooper arrested on suspicion of DWI is also facing charges for kicking a Raleigh police officer in the shin.

According to a police report, 38-year-old Steven Bradley was driving his personal vehicle when he got distracted, ran a stop sign and drove into a pond Tuesday night.

Police said the car left 26 feet of skid marks.

His 7-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son were in the car but were not injured.

The police report listed Bradley's blood-alcohol level at 0.11 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

He was released on a written promise to appear in court Jan. 20.

A spokesman said the patrol is disappointed and Bradley has been placed on investigative leave.

Brunswick Man Dies After 3-Year-Old Grabs Gun

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A 22-year-old man died after he was shot in the head in a Brunswick home Tuesday night, and police said the shot was fired when a 3-year-old picked up a gun.

Investigators said Collins was shot when a 35-month-old child grabbed a loaded gun on a table. The gun went off, hitting Collins as he sat on a nearby sofa.

"We recommend to every resident, make sure that you have your guns and loaded weapons in a locked, secure place that's away from any child. When we do that, we have a more secure home and secure environment," said Brunswick Police Chief Edna Johnson.
