The Super Dictionary

The short version: get a Palm TX if you want to go deluxe (though the price is still quite reasonable compared to Windows Mobile [Pocket PC] devices). If you want to keep the price as low as possible, bid for a used Sony Clie TJ-25 on eBay (and don't bid more than $50). If you're considering other models, here are the most usable ones you're likely to see.

Final word: Get a Palm TX instead if you want one device that does everything, a Sony Clie TJ25 or TJ37 if you just want a great dictionary, or a Treo if you also want it to be your phone.

PAdict is the best Japanese language tool I've seen, and it's a free, open source project that is continually being improved. Suffice it to say that almost everyone who's played with mine ended up buying a PDA, downloading PAdict, and using it as their main electronic dictionary, even people who already had big expensive Wordtanks. Once you try it out for yourself, you'll want it--ESPECIALLY if you've been using a denshi jisho for a while. Main advantage: it's made for English speakers learning and using Japanese, not the other way around. Coolest features: can enter kanji by writing it with the stylus; animated stroke order diagrams; save words to a hotlist for later study and review. Most useful feature: when you look up a word, you immediately have all the information right in front of you on one screen: kanji, hiragana pronunciation, English definition. Weaknesses: limited selection of dictionaries, although the full version of the excellent Edict is now among them; English search function in Edict is sometimes less than ideal. However, beginning students may find that it offers everything they need for some time.

When the sun blazes down on us, it is always good to have your handkerchief, cold drink and fan at hand. While the ladies often try to impress people by holding a beautiful folding fan called Sensu, most guys use a normal flat fan “on a stick” called Uchiwa. These days, most Uchiwa I see in the streets are give-away fans for yet another (!)advertising campaign and so it’s really hard for me to consider them interesting… However, the other day I discovered some very beautiful Uchiwa fans at a long-established stationary shop called Kyukyodo in Ginza. Those transparent delicacies were something I had never seen before, so I would like to share a breeze from these fantastic Sukashi Uchiwa with you today.
