Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software is a compelling new architecture for providing ofﬁce desktop environments and IT services to users. It delivers applications and full desktop environments to clients using a server-based computing model. All the intelligence—compute power, storage, software, and administration—is concentrated in the datacenter. Web browsers running on Sun Ray ultra-thin clients, PCs, or mobile devices provide access to services and applications running in the datacenter.

This article suggests an operational model for a desktop environment that is based on the Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software. Using ITIL as a foundation, the concept presented illustrates opportunities for optimizing operations and describe the next steps toward industrializing IT services—the managed desktop factory.

Sun's Fortress Language: Parallelism by Default

If anyone knows how to introduce a new programming language, it's Sun Microsystems. The company's highly successful Java language, which was introduced in 1991, has become ubiquitous in network-centric and embedded computing. Today, there's a whole research team at Sun Labs devoted to programming languages, and the big project there in recent years has been the development of the Fortress programming language. The end game is to "do for Fortran what Java did for C."

Unlike Java though, Fortress is geared for HPC applications, with programmability as a major design goal.

"We were looking for a language that was good for multicore, for supercomputing, and for everything in between," explains Eric Allen, Principal Investigator of the Programming Languages Research Group at Sun Labs.

A huge x86 server (I think the biggest they have is an 8 socket, 4cores AMD box = 32 cores) running Solaris (of OpenSolaris) apps at full speed, running on Solaris containers for different users, and running other OSs on each container with virtualbox, on a CIA/DHS/DOD level secure environment.

Combining Virtualization Technologies

At the risk of sounding like a late-night TV commercial for toothpaste ... I'm occasionally asked the question "which virtualization technology should I use?" As if there's a one-size-fits-all answer. Well, admittedly it's more often a desire for a simplicity in the face of a complex world, and probably mostly because I've been confusing them with too many possibilities! Often, one technology does makes more sense than another, depending on what the customer is trying to do. However, there are many virtualization opportunities up and down the SW stack, and sometimes combining technologies can lead to more effective solutions.

School-Age Children and Preteens

Kids ages 6 to 9 need about 10 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age from a child's need for private time with parents, without siblings around. Try to make a little private time just before bedtime and use it to share confidences and have small discussions, which will also prepare your child for sleep.

Children ages 10 to 12 need a little over 9 hours of shuteye a night. But it's up to parents to judge the exact amount of rest their children need and see that they're in bed in time for sufficient sleep.

Lack of sleep for kids can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and can also make a condition like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) worse.

Teens

Adolescents need about 8 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night, but many don't get it. And as they progress through puberty, teens actually need more sleep.

Air Pollution – City Comparisons

In many of today’s modern cities, the main environmental health hazard to the population is exposure to air pollution.

The three main air pollutants are:

Suspended Particles – made up of soot, smoke, dust and liquid droplets.
Associated health hazard: particles and soot exposure over a long period of time is related to a wide range of chronic respiratory illness such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases as well as worsening heart conditions and other conditions.
Sulfur Dioxide – produce by the combustion of fossil fuels, on the whole, motor vehicles and small and varied sources (such as boilers and stoves) contributing the most.
Associated health hazard: causes acid rain and can be extremely detrimental to the health of the young and elderly.
Nitrogen Dioxide – caused by fuel combustion, aerobic decomposition and nitrogenous fertilizers.
