ABSTRACT

Bayesian nonparametric models have garnered significant attention in recent years in both the machine learning and statistics communities. These are highly flexible models whose complexity grows with the amount of data, and are nice approaches to addressing the common problem of model selection. In this talk I shall first give a brief overview of Dirichlet processes and infinite mixture models, the cornerstone of Bayesian nonparametric models. Then I shall introduce the hierarchical Dirichlet process, a Bayesian nonparametric model for problems involving multiple related groups of data. I illustrate the use of hierarchical Dirichlet processes using some applications to document and language modelling.

Franz Josef Och joined Google in 2004 as a research scientist, where he leads the machine translation group. He has been working on statistical machine translation since 1997.

Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California from 2002 to 2004. His main research interests are statistical machine translation, natural language processing and machine learning. He has co-authored more than fifty scientific papers and has written several open-source software packages related to statistical natural language processing.

Cell phone vs. HIV

A non-profit called One World launched a help service for questions on HIV in Kenya a few years ago. But researchers at the University of California - Los Angeles are proposing a truly heroic advance in the use of cell phones. The UCLA researchers propose using cell phones to diagnose diseases like HIV through a novel imaging technique (Hat tip: Giulio Quaggiotto). According to the article:

Ozcan envisions people one day being able to draw a blood sample into a chip the size of a quarter, which could then be inserted into a LUCAS-equipped cell phone that would quickly identify and count the cells within the sample. The read-out could be sent wirelessly to a hospital for further analysis.

No word, unfortunately, on the possible price tag for the proposed cell phone.

Thus, computer systems will have greater opportunity to learn from the collective behavior of billions of humans. They will get smarter, gleaning relationships between objects, nuances, intentions, meanings, and other deep conceptual information. Today's Google search uses an early form of this approach, but in the future many more systems will be able to benefit from it.

Traditionally, systems that solve complicated problems and queries have been called "intelligent", but compared to earlier approaches in the field of 'artificial intelligence', the path that we foresee has important new elements.

And it will be built based on the needs of solving and improving concrete and useful tasks

performing spoken dialogue, translating text and speech, understanding images and videos

When combined with the creativity, knowledge, and drive inherent in people, this "intelligent cloud" will generate many surprising and significant benefits to mankind.

RDV is a visualization environment for scientific and engineering data. Built on top of the RBNB dynamic data server, it supports local and remote data sources and can visualize numeric, video, image, and audio data in a number of different ways. RDV can be extended to support new types of data or visualize data in new ways. RDV is free software and can be used without restriction according to the conditions of the license.

New composites could lead to better food packaging, and to lighter car and airplane parts.

Polymers can be infused with carbon nanotubes to make materials with similar properties. But graphene could be much cheaper. "You can buy [graphite] in bags for dollars a pound, while single-walled nanotubes are hundreds of dollars per gram," says Catherine Brinson

One promising use for graphene composites will be to make fuel tanks and food packaging. Gas and liquid molecules can permeate through plain polymers, says Rodney Ruoff of the University of Texas at Austin, who was involved in the work. But graphene composites can form an impermeable barrier. That means fuel-tank linings would keep vapors in and dissipate static electricity. "You could keep sandwiches outside the refrigerator for six months without oxygen getting through and oxidizing [them]," suggests Ruoff.

RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper. It is the practical self-copying 3D printer shown on the right - a self-replicating machine.

To give you an idea of how robust, think Lego bricks and you're in the right area. You could make lots of useful stuff, but interestingly you could also make most of the parts to make another 3D printer.

So what the RepRap team are doing is to develop and to give away the designs for a much cheaper machine with the novel capability of being able to self-copy (material costs are about €400). That way it's accessible to small communities in the developing world as well as individuals in the developed world.

Printing Buildings

Projections indicate costs will be around one fifth as much as conventional construction. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be automatically constructed in a single run, embedded in each house all the conduits for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.

The machine will cost between $500K to $700K for average size (2000 sq ft — 200 m2) detached houses. This is not much given that a concrete pump truck is now $300k-$400K. Note that with one machine numerous homes can be built. The first commercial machines to be available this year, 2008. The machine will be collapsible to form into an easy truck load. The unloading and setup will take between 1-2 hours.

Behrokh Khoshnevis is the visionary who has been driving this concept. He is the Director of the Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) and Director of Manufacturing Engineering Graduate Program at USC.

Web publishers often ask us how they can maximize their visibility on the web. Much of this has to do with search engine optimization -- making sure a publisher's content shows up on all the search engines.

However, there are some cases in which publishers need to communicate more information to search engines -- like the fact that they don't want certain content to appear in search results. And for that they use something called the Robots Exclusion Protocol (REP), which lets publishers control how search engines access their site: whether it's controlling the visibility of their content across their site (via robots.txt) or down to a much more granular level for individual pages (via META tags).

Africa has been the fastest growing market worldwide in communication technology over the past three years and will continue to emerge as an important market for the industry, according to the head of the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

A report released today by the ITU said that growth in Africa’s mobile telephone sector had “defied all predictions.” Africa had 65 million new subscribers in 2007 alone and mobile phone penetration has risen from just one in 50 people in 2000 to one third of the population today. On June 16, 2006, Professor Lawrence Lessig gave a talk at the Center for American Progress entitled "The Withering of the Net: How DC Pathologies are Undermining the Growth and Wealth of the Net." This talk was the second in a series of three. The first talk was Professor Yochai Benkler, the third featured Dave Farber and Vint Cerf.

In just under 40 minutes, Lessig delivered a stunning performance, documenting his assertion that the Internet was created by Republicans and discussing the Read Only (RO) and Read Write (RW) Internet(s). In those less than 40 minutes, Lessig hit the mark precisely on 457 slides. In the spirit of the RW Internet, we taped his performance and then mashed that up with his presentation materials.
