In 1900 he understood the concepts behind what finally became the "web" and would have built it given the right support. He also had plans to distribute electricity wirelessly around the world for free. I truly believe he would have accomplished that too.

Clip Source: www.keelynet.com

Supported by the Pierce-Arrow Co. and General Electric in 1931, he took the

gasoline engine from a new Pierce-Arrow and replaced it with an 80-horsepower

alternating-current electric motor with no external power source.

At a local radio shop he bought 12 vacuum tubes, some wires and assorted

resistors, and assembled them in a circuit box 24 inches long, 12 inches

wide and 6 inches high, with a pair of 3-inch rods sticking out. Getting

into the car with the circuit box in the front seat beside him, he

pushed the rods in, announced, "We now have power," and proceeded to test

drive the car for a week, often at speeds of up to 90 mph.

As it was an alternating-current motor and there were no batteries involved,

where did the power come from?

Popular responses included charges of "black magic," and the sensitive

genius didn't like the skeptical comments of the press. He removed his

mysterious box, returned to his laboratory in New York - and the secret of

his power source died with him.

Tags: nikola tesla, electric car, car, automobile, 1931, inventor, invention, science, electricity

<clipSource>http://www.keelynet.com/energy/teslafe1.htm</clipSource>

Tesla, the Genius Who Lit the World

clipped by: adamc
clipper's remarks: Tesla the genius. CANBERRA, Australia—Scientists and Australian beer maker Foster's are teaming up to generate clean energy from brewery waste water—by using sugar-consuming bacteria.

The experimental technology was unveiled Wednesday by scientists at Australia's University of Queensland, which was given a $115,000 state government grant to install a microbial fuel cell at a Foster's Group brewery near Brisbane, the capital of Queensland state.

The fuel cell is essentially a battery in which bacteria consume water-soluble brewing waste such as sugar, starch and alcohol.

The battery produces electricity plus clean water, said Prof. Jurg Keller, the university's wastewater expert.

The complex technology harnesses the chemical energy that the bacteria releases from the organic material, converting it into electrical energy.

The 660-gallon fuel cell will be 250 times bigger than a prototype that has been operating at the university laboratory for three months, Keller said.

The standoff ended when associates of manager Michael Jeffery appeared and peacefully regained custody of Hendrix. No police or media reports of the incident exist, but Hendrix himself retold the story often when confiding with friends or associates about his management problems. He believed that Jeffery staged the kidnapping to bolster his role as manager or as a threat of some kind. The incident had occurred at a time when Hendrix was at odds with Jeffery over the direction of his career, and his recollection was influenced by his drug induced paranoia.[7]

Tags: jimi hendrix, kidnapping, mobsters, music, michael jeffery

<clipSource>http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jimi_Hendrix&oldid=136036494</clipSource>

Clipmarks helps make Firefox a favorite browser

clipped by: adamc
clipper's remarks: As part of a piece about Apple launching Safari for PCs, the Telegraph's inhouse expert gave ONE example of an extension that makes Firefox the favorite browser for many. This free software offers tabbed browsing (where you can open multiple web pages in the same browser window and flick between them), RSS feeds (which stream news and updates from your favourite sites), and a host of extensions that improve surfing, such as Clipmarks, which allows you to bookmark only the most interesting parts of a web page, rather than the whole thing.

Tags: clipmarks, firefox, browser, web, extensions

<clipSource>http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/main.jhtml?xml=/connected/2007/06/14/dlapple14.xml</clipSource>

Science of Search: How to Make Out, or Levitate

clipped by: haraya
clipper's remarks:
How-to searches also reveal our aspirations. Comprising 12% of the instructional searches were those questions geared towards self improvement: how to "lose weight," "gain weight," "make money," and, for those truly in search of instant gratification, "make money fast." On the darker side, over 9.5% of the searches were for illicit or illegal activities, with marijuana use figuring high on the list ("how to grow marijuana," "grow pot," "grow weed") but also some very concerning questions: "how to commit suicide," "how to make meth," even "how to make a bomb." We apparently feel comfortable enough with our computers and the Internet to query just about anything.

Search continues to grow in importance as we sift through the mountain of information available to us. As the growth of "how to" searches increases, its clear that we are turning to search engines as sources of knowledge and insight into getting things done.

Clip Source: www.time.com

Search engines have gone way beyond a simple tool to find information. We might search for a website that we can't remember, a factoid for a report, or movie times for the local theater. More and more, we are turning to search engines for more involved queries, posing philosophical questions (why?) or at times searching for instruction (How to...?).

For the four weeks ending July 21, 2007, Hitwise amassed a list of over 130,000 unique "how to" queries.
