Disney.com to become MySpace for Kids

clipper's remarks: Definitely long overdue, though they really are hitting the market knowing what works and what doesn't and should be able to execute successfully. The product placement that will underwrite the site is the bit that scares me (and I don't have kids yet, though I do worry about my nieces). Kids are interacting with brands at such a young age these days, I just hope it doesn't turn them all into shopaholics.

The new Disney.com, which Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger plans to unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next Monday, is Disney's take on social networking for mainstream America. In it, kids can chat while watching video clips, listening to music and playing a game, all at the same time. Parents, meanwhile, can control their kids' use of the site.

Of course, a closed universe has advantages beyond parental control. Mr. Yanover says there are many more advertising opportunities on the new site, including display ads, video ads and sponsorships. Disney will also charge for subscriptions to more advanced games and also plans to offer things like special powers in a game for a one-off charge. And it will sell DVDs, merchandise, travel packages and tickets to its parks directly to the public.

1838: The first ever photograph of a person

clipper's remarks: This photo of Daguerre's came a dozen or so years after French inventor Nicéphore Niépce produced the first permanent photograph. I wonder what ever came of the guy getting his boots polished -- I'm sure he had no idea people would still be talking about him hundred of years later.

"Boulevard du Temple", taken by Louis Daguerre in late 1838 or early 1839, was the first-ever photograph of a person. It is an image of a busy street, but because exposure time was over ten minutes, the city traffic was moving too much to appear. The exception is a man in the bottom left corner, who stood still getting his boots polished long enough to show up in the picture.

The Sarcasm Mark

This is an interesting idea, and this new punctuation mark could definitely have some usefulness, but the great fun of written sarcasm, for me, is in the detection. The element of uncertainty stimulates the brain, and a fine-tuning of one's perception.

I have just invented a new form of punctuation. I know... it seems far-fetched, but really, inventing new forms of punctuation is not that hard. I'm filling a need here, just like Ron Popeil.

Anyway... in print, there are question marks to indicate queries, exclamation marks to indicate emphasis and periods to indicate a statement, but nothing lets a reader know that a sentence is meant to be sarcastic.

I am often online and I participate in several forms of written communication on the Internet like chats, bulletin boards and email. I'm sure that you do as well—since you're here reading this. I'm also sure you've seen a joke or sarcastic remark taken the wrong way because the reader doesn't regognize the author's intent. Why do we let this continue to happen? Is this a question? Yes, it is. You knew because of the question mark.

What I am proposing is a punctuation mark that clears up all confusion about sarcastic remarks for the reader. The closest thing to a sarcasm mark is the winking smiley—and he isn't really a professional tool. You can't write a missive to a business associate with little cutesy ASCII faces in it. It's just not done.

In a hitherto unpublished essay, Frey, who died in 1957, wrote of his first meeting with Hitler in 1915: "A pale, tall man tumbled down into the cellar after the first shells of the daily evening attacks had begun to fall, fear and rage glowing in his eyes.

"At that time he looked tall because he was so thin. A full moustache, which had to be trimmed later because of the new gas masks, covered the ugly slit of his mouth."

Yet, according to new research into Adolf Hitler's early life, the distinctive, toothbrush shape that adorned his scowling face was not his first preference.

A previously unpublished essay by a writer who served alongside Hitler in the First World War trenches reveals the future Fuhrer was only obeying orders when he shaped his moustache into its tightly-clipped style.

He was instructed to do so in order that it would fit under the respirator masks, introduced in response to British mustard gas attacks.

Had that order never been issued, the tyrant who brought most of Europe to its knees would be remembered as a man with a large Prussian moustache

Hormonal sentience

Acacia trees produce tannin to defend themselves when they are grazed upon by animals. The airborne scent of the tannin is picked up by other acacia trees, which then start to produce tannin themselves as a protetction from the nearby animals. When attacked by caterpillars, some plants can release chemical signals to attract parasitic wasps that attack the caterpillars.

A similar phenomenon can be found not only between plants and animals, but also between fungus and animals. There exists some sort of communication between a fungus garden and workers of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa. If the garden is fed with plants that are poisonous for the fungus, it signals this to the ants, which then will avoid fertilizing the fungus garden with any more of the poisonous plant.

In theory even an organism with a hormonal system instead of a nervous system could be intelligent in some degree, but it would be an extremely slow brain, to say the least.

CBS is ready to unleash a reality take on "Lord of the Flies," quietly wrapping filming on a new skein in which a group of 8- to 15-year-olds will create their own society.

Rather than surviving on an island, the kiddies relocated to Bonanza City, N.M., a ghost town abandoned more than a century ago.

Goal for the kids is to build a functional society. They have to pass laws, choose leaders and build an economy.

Unlike most reality shows, there will be no mandated eliminations. Kids can go home when they want to.
