Can San Francisco's Treasure Island live up to plans to make it the "Super-Green City of the Future"?
The island is set to become a model for eco-livinga model of urban sustainability, is an entirely man-made 400-acre property in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. Originally built in 1939 from sea bottom, quarried rock, and loam, it is currently home to an abandoned naval base and a small number of low- and middle income residents.

Among some of the plans include LEED-certified residential towers to
increase urban density, a pedestrian-friendly downtown center, bike
lanes, open green space to promote biodiversity, city-sponsored
composting/recycling, "living machine" wastewater treatment, an urban
farm, and solar/wind/tidal renewable energy generation.

The new Treasure Island proposal is a testament to what our world
is capable of when the political will exists to make sustainability a
reality.

Tags: green, super city, san fransisco

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/01/super-green-cit.html</clipSource>

The Science of Siesta

clipped by: wildcat
clipper's remarks: Research Finds That Napping Improves Brain Functioning..

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

Let’s hear it for siesta time. What better news than to hear that taking midday naps are good for your grey matter? Companies that want smarter employees should let them take 90 minute midday nap-time. Researchers at the University of Haifa in cooperation with the Sleep Laboratory at the Sheba Medical Center and researchers from the Department of Psychology at the University of Montreal recently concluded that a daytime nap changes the course of consolidation in the brain in several positive ways. This research mirrors several other recent studies with similar conclusions.

A ninety-minute daytime nap helps speed up the process of long term
memory consolidation

"We still don't know the exact mechanism
of the memory process that occurs during sleep, but the results of this
research suggest the possibility that it is possible to speed up memory
consolidation, and in the future, we may be able to do it
artificially,"

As time passes, our memories are transferred to different parts of the brain in order to ideally store our past experiences. While scientists have known that sleep plays an important role in helping consolidate memories, a new study investigates the role of sleep a step further, and shows how one night of sleep can lead to changes in brain activity six months after an event has occurred.

Their research shows that a good night’s sleep after learning word pairs enhances memory processing in the hippocampus, and also induces information transfer between the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). This transfer serves to consolidate memories, helping new memories become stable and immune to interfering stimuli.

Our work shows how the development of a trace left by new memories depends on sleep

This is the first time we could confirm in humans a number of predictions based on animal research.

Tags: brain, mind, memory, sleep, science, health

<clipSource>http://physorg.com/news116759950.html</clipSource>

The Airships of the Future

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

If you watch just about any SciFi movie or TV series, or read any book where the Nazis won in World War 11 as historical fact, then you will most likely have seen an airship! They seem to be the stuff alternate time lines are made of, with movies like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and books like Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials both preferring airships, zeppelins or dirigible to your good old fashioned airplane.

So in a carbon conscious world where doing something for the environment is critical, it makes sense that airships are once again being talked about.

The two-football-fields-long concept Aeroscraft pictured above is not a Blimp. Quality not quantity. No matter how much your mother tells you that you need eight hours of sleep, if you're not tired and you can't truly relax, your sleep time will be worthless.

Do not take sleeping pills. We saw how a soccer victory united Iraqis. It's also a great distraction when needed.

Clip Source: content-aus.cricinfo.com

On Friday, England's cricketers suffered two defeats in a single day at the hands of the Australians. At Cape Town, Paul Collingwood's men were rolled over by eight wickets in the World Twenty20, while in Southern Iraq, the soldiers of the First Mechanised Brigade succumbed by the same margin to their antipodean rivals, Overwatch Battlegroup West, at the US Air Force base in Tallil, near Basra.

Tallil has also become the home to Ashes matches between the English and Australian military contingents working in Iraq. The match is played in aid of charities supporting ex-servicemen and women from the two countries, and also provides a welcome spot of light relief from the challenging and often dangerous work the troops are doing to help the Iraqi Security Forces bring stability and security to the south of the country.

Tags: cricket, iraq, australia, england

<clipSource>http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/australia/content/story/311368.html</clipSource>

Blind Pilot flies from London to Australia

clipped by: book-mole

Clip Source: maisonbisson.com

I learned of it last night on The CBC’s As It Happens: Miles Hilton-Barber, blind since age 30, has flown from Biggen Hill, south of London, to Gosford, outside Sydney, by ultralight in a journey that took almost two months.

Aviation regulations required he take a sighted co-pilot, but in the As It Happens story he explained how his instruments were geared up to give him audio and voice feedback such that he could do most of it on his own.

Still, one gets the idea that the man wouldn’t let a lack of suitable instruments keep him from making the flight or any other adventure.
