longer just a national issue of 80 million Turks. It is a vital issue today for
the international community. And Turkey's role in the Israel-Syria peace talks
is only the tip of the iceberg. In the highly volatile Middle East situation,
Turkey also facilitated contacts between US National Security Advisor Stephen
Hadley and Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki. (The two adversaries
visited Ankara recently.) Furthermore, Turkey has waded into the Iraq project.

Besides, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is poised to spread to
the northern shores of the Black Sea. The new cold war has arrived in Turkey.

Turkish foreign policy is cruising at an optimal
level with its prestige as a regional power running high as it mediates peace
in its neighborhood and commands influence. Turkey has returned to the Middle
East region after an absence of almost nine decades.

Tags: turkey

<clipSource>http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JH02Ak03.html</clipSource>

Israeli Terrorists on Rampage

clipped by: abailart

Clip Source: www.haaretz.com

A settler attacked an Israel Defense Forces soldier at the West Bank outpost of Havat Gilad Thursday afternoon, holding a knife to the soldier's throat and forcibly removing his helmet from his head. The attacker then fled the scene.
The incident occurred during a confrontation between settlers and Israeli soldiers in the area, west of Nablus.

The civilian population suffers," says Said Abu Hijla, a lecturer at Al-Najah University in the city.

In the bus I get acquainted with my two neighbours: Andrew Feinstein, a son of Holocaust survivors who is married to a Muslim woman from Bangladesh and served six years as an MP for the ANC; and Nathan Gefen, who has a male Muslim partner and was a member of the right-wing Betar movement in his youth. These two men, who should have been poles apart politically, discovered in that first meeting, which lasted for hours, that they had similar visions of Israeli/Palestinian possible future cooperation. They decided to continue their dialogue and to collaborate on musical events to further their shared vision of peaceful co-existence in the Middle East. This led to Mr. Barenboim's first concert on the West Bank, a piano recital at the Palestinian Birzeit University in February 1999, and to a workshop for young musicians from the Middle East that took place in Weimar, Germany, in August 1999.

Said passed away in 2003 but his partnership with Daniel Barenboim lives on through

projects targeted at young Arabs and Israelis.

Clip Source: www.youtube.com

Tags: said barenboim, palestine israel

<clipSource>http://explorersfoundation.org/glyphery/203.html</clipSource>

Israel Will Attack Iran with US Backing

clipped by: abailart

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Israel "will attack" Iran if it continues to develop nuclear weapons, one of prime minister Ehud Olmert's deputies warned yesterday.

The Israelis have never confirmed they have nuclear weapons, but this has been widely assumed since a scientist leaked details in the 1980s.

Mr Carter made his comments on Israel's weapons at a press conference at the annual literary Hay Festival in Wales.

He also described Israeli treatment of Palestinians as "one of the greatest human rights crimes on earth".

During the press briefing, Mr Carter expressed his support for Israel as a country, but criticised its domestic and foreign policy.

"One of the greatest human rights crimes on earth is the starvation and imprisonment of 1.6m Palestinians," he said.

The former US president cited statistics which he said showed the nutritional intake of some Palestinian children to be below that of children in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as describing the European position on Israel could be best described as "supine"

Tags: jimmy carter, israel's nuclear arsenal

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7420573.stm</clipSource>

Why Israel fits in with the West

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: "It is possible that war is the only way out of the situation created by Zionism. I leave it to others to find cause for rejoicing in this. But if there is any chance of some day seeing a peaceful solution, it will not be achieved by telling the Arabs that it is their duty to applaud their conquerors because they are Europeans or are in the process of becoming Europeanized, because they are 'advanced,' because they are revolutionary or (almost) socialist and, even less, simply because they are Jews! The most that can be asked of the Arabs is that they resign themselves to a disagreeable situation, and that in resigning themselves they make the best of their resignation. It is not easy to get a conquered person to resign himself to defeat, and it is not made any easier by loudly proclaiming how right it was that he was soundly beaten. It is generally wiser to offer him compensation. And those who have not suffered from the fight can (and, I believe, even must) recommend forgiveness ...

Clip Source: usa.mediamonitors.net

"Israel, A Colonial-Settler State?" is the question posed by the title of Prof. Maxime Rodinson’s 1973 book, which answers this crucial question in the affirmative.

Rodinson became well known in France when he expressed a certain reticence about Israel, despite himself being Jewish. He had always been suspicious of Zionism and considered those who expressed enthusiasm for Israel were indulging in a belated form of colonialism.

The Jews attracted by Zionism emigrated to Palestine, and then they dominated it. They occupied it in deed and then adopted legislation to justify this occupation by law ... To be aware of the colonial character of the State of Israel is to begin to make clear why the pressure of the events does so much to thrust Israel into the camp of the Western powers, and why any other orientation would require heroic efforts on the part of progressive elements in Israel ... Israeli fire hit a house in the Gaza Strip today while a family was eating
breakfast inside, killing four Palestinian children and another civilian,
 residents said.

Residents said an Israeli projectile smashed through the ceiling of a
one-storey house where a family was having breakfast, killing four children
 - siblings whose ages ranged from 1-1/2 to 5 years old - and an unidentified

Over the last several years, similar petroglyphs have been identified on as many as five continents. They all date from roughly the same time-period. In the late 20th century, archaeologists discovered a collection of symbols carved in stone as petroglyphs in the Negev desert of Israel that appeared to be writing. Dating of these symbols showed that they were made over an extended period time, beginning around 1700 BC.

This strange collection of symbols was first examined by Dr. James Harris, a petroglyph expert and archaeologist from Brigham Young University. He identified the alphabet as being a proto-Canaanite system, which successfully translated by using old-Hebrew or Thalmudic phonetic sounds.

Earlier, William McGlone, an amateur archaeologist and retired space engineer, discovered the same collection of symbols carved in heavily patinated stones surrounding the Southeast town of La Junta, Colorado

the patina corresponded to the same era as the writing found in Harkarkom in Israel.

Tags: petroglyphs, archaeology, language, symbols

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/04/did-an-ancient.html</clipSource>

Turning Israeli Soldiers into Animals: by Israeli Soldiers

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: A force for justice

Breaking the Silence was formed four years ago by a group of ex-soldiers, most of whom had served in Israel Defence Forces combat units in Hebron. Many of the soldiers do reserve duty in the military each year. It has collected some 500 testimonies from former soldiers who served in the West Bank and Gaza. Its first public exposure was with an exhibition of photographs by soldiers serving in Hebron and the organisation also runs regular tours of Hebron for Israeli students and diplomats. Asked what he meant, he replied: "To lose the human condition is to become an animal."

In its introduction to the testimonies, Breaking the Silence says: "The soldiers' determination to fulfil their mission yields tragic results: the proper-normative becomes despicable, the inconceivable becomes routine ... [The] testimonies are to illustrate the manner in which they are swept into the brutal reality reigning on the ground, a reality whereby the lives of many thousands of Palestinian families are at the questionable mercy of youths. Hebron turns a focused, flagrant lens at the reality to which Israel's young representatives are constantly sent."

Tags: male violence, israeli military

<clipSource>http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/our-reign-of-terror-by-the-israeli-army-811769.html</clipSource>

Jews against Zionism

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: I have clipped this not to promote a point of view but to offer those who care to know the many strands of perspectives on Israel an opportunity to go and look at some sites that explain that by no means all Jews support the state of Israel or its Zionist ideology.

Clip Source: www.nkusa.org

March 21, 2008:
