It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.

Seven UFOs Filmed over Liverpool

A Liverpool man claims to have seen several UFOs hovering in the sky around the city and filmed them on his phone.

Vince Pybis said he saw a light above the bushes in Sefton Park and got his phone to film it, by which time six more had appeared.

"I'm a sceptic, I didn't believe in UFOs. But until you've actually seen one - well I saw seven - then I thought, they are out there."

Last month declassified government files revealed a letter sent to a secret agent from a man in Wirral claiming he had been in physical and psychic contact with an extra terrestrial called Algar.

He wrote: "I have had a relationship with Algar since 1958 and it continued until 1981 when he was killed by another race of beings."

Squirrel Gang Chews Dog to Death

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.

Passers-by were too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute.

They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.

"They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.

Paul Parker describes himself as a conservationist. But Mr Parker conserves by killing.

His chosen prey is the North American Grey Squirrel.

His Northumbria-based organisation, the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership, say they have culled more than 15,000 squirrels in little over a year. That works out as approximately 200 squirrels a week.

"They are carrying squirrel pox which kills the reds. They also hammer the bird population, they kill the chicks to get into nest boxes and they eat eggs.

"We are going to end up losing all our reds within 10 years if we don't take these out of the equation."

A game shop in Corbridge is our next stop.

The last two grey squirrel loins are on sale in the window. The furry creatures have become the latest game delicacy.

"We sell quite a lot on the market and to local restaurants. The shop manages to sell quite a bit."

As the saying goes, some people are born with silver spoons in their mouths. The same goes for at least one species of the animal world, according to research done in part by the University of Alberta.

A study of female red squirrels in Kluane, Yukon, revealed that advantageous ‘silver spoon’ factors such as food availability and spring temperature experienced between birth and weaning could reflect later on each squirrel’s lifetime fitness, longevity and reproductive success.

researchers discovered that female babies born into fortunate circumstances with more food, warmer spring weather and a lower population, experienced long-lasting positive effects on reproductive success, producing more offspring over the remainder of their lives.

In contrast, squirrels born into rougher circumstances with less food and bitter weather didn’t live as long and tended to wean fewer young when they were alive.

VICIOUS squirrels are plaguing our woods and lanes says one parish councillor. Gillian White has said her dog and cat were under constant attack from the fluffy-tailed animals when she went out walking her beloved pets. The Wooburn parish councillor said some wooded areas have become over-run, as squirrels caught in residential areas were released into the wild at selected locations – dramatically increasing their numbers. Cllr White wants warnings posted so pet owners know where squirrels are being released. She said at a parish council meeting on Tuesday: “Could we put up a sign saying ‘squirrel control is beginning, so please watch your little dogs’?” Wycombe District Council spokesman Becky Toone said the council was responsible for catching rodents, including squirrels, only when they became a nuisance in homes.

Cunning squirrels make bogus burials of 'nuts and seeds' to fool onlookers

Their quick intelligence, razor-sharp memory and ruthless cunning have made them a foe of gardeners everywhere.

Now it turns out that grey squirrels are even more devious than anyone realised.

To protect their winter food stocks from potential thieves, they put on an elaborate show of burying non-existent nuts and seeds, a study has shown.

Scientists say the fake burials are designed to confuse any rival squirrels, birds or humans who might be watching.

The level of deception has astonished animal experts who say it shows a rare form of animal cunning and intelligence.

He found that a fifth of all so-called food burials are fake - and the proportion goes up if they think they are being watched.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to show evidence of behavioural deception by a rodent, and the first to use an experimental approach to studying deceptive behaviour in in the wild," he says.

The squirrels go to elaborate lengths to keep up the pretence of hiding food.

Also called the Malabar giant squirrel, the species is endemic to deciduous, mixed deciduous, and moist evergreen forests of peninsular India, reaching as far north as the Satpura hill range of Madhya Pradesh.
The Indian giant squirrel is an upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires "tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests." It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6m (c.20ft). When in danger, the creature often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing. Its main predators are birds of prey and leopards.

A submarine cable in the Middle East has been snapped, adding to global net problems caused by breaks in two lines under the Mediterranean on Wednesday.

The Falcon cable, owned by a firm which operates another damaged cable, led to a "critical" telecom breakdown, according to one local official.

Wednesday's incident caused disruption to 70% of the nationwide internet network in Egypt on Wednesday, while India suffered up to 60% disruption.

New Squirrel-like Mammal Discovered

A new species of mammal has been discovered in the mountains of Tanzania, scientists report.

The bizarre-looking creature, dubbed Rhynochocyon udzungwensis, is a type of giant elephant shrew, or sengi.

They are so bizarre-looking and a lot of their behavioural ecology is so unique and interesting, you kind of get wrapped up with them

He said: "Elephant shrews are almost all distinguished by distinctive colour patterns, and this is especially true of the forest-dwelling giant sengis.

It has a grey face, a long, flexible snout, a bulky, amber body, a jet-black rump and it stands on spindly legs.

Despite its name, the creature, along with the 15 other known species of elephant shrew, is not actually related to shrews.

First there was the boy of 11 quizzed over an e-mail calling his schoolfriend gay.

Then came the five-year-old told off for playing hopscotch after chalking on the street.

Now, just when you thought police over-reaction had reached its height, we present the couple investigated for joking about squirrels.

The Cumberland News had published an article claiming that incomers from the South were releasing grey squirrels in the area

The Harrows, who used to live in Devon, sensed an anti-southern bias in the story and decided on a light-hearted response

sending a spoof letter to their local paper.

Shortly afterwards, there was a knock at the door of the couple's home in the Lake District village of Thackthwaite, near Penrith.

Two officers from Cumbria Police informed them they were investigating claims of squirrel abuse.

"It would be laughable if it were not so sad. How do these people think we got hold of the grey squirrels in the first place - run around with a pocketful of peanuts and a lasso?
