It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.

A Liverpool man claims to have seen several UFOs hovering in the sky around the city and filmed them on his phone.

Vince Pybis said he saw a light above the bushes in Sefton Park and got his phone to film it, by which time six more had appeared.

"I'm a sceptic, I didn't believe in UFOs. But until you've actually seen one - well I saw seven - then I thought, they are out there."

Last month declassified government files revealed a letter sent to a secret agent from a man in Wirral claiming he had been in physical and psychic contact with an extra terrestrial called Algar.

He wrote: "I have had a relationship with Algar since 1958 and it continued until 1981 when he was killed by another race of beings."

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.

Passers-by were too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute.

They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.

"They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.

VICIOUS squirrels are plaguing our woods and lanes says one parish councillor. Gillian White has said her dog and cat were under constant attack from the fluffy-tailed animals when she went out walking her beloved pets. The Wooburn parish councillor said some wooded areas have become over-run, as squirrels caught in residential areas were released into the wild at selected locations – dramatically increasing their numbers. Cllr White wants warnings posted so pet owners know where squirrels are being released. She said at a parish council meeting on Tuesday: “Could we put up a sign saying ‘squirrel control is beginning, so please watch your little dogs’?” Wycombe District Council spokesman Becky Toone said the council was responsible for catching rodents, including squirrels, only when they became a nuisance in homes.

Also called the Malabar giant squirrel, the species is endemic to deciduous, mixed deciduous, and moist evergreen forests of peninsular India, reaching as far north as the Satpura hill range of Madhya Pradesh.
The Indian giant squirrel is an upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires "tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests." It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6m (c.20ft). When in danger, the creature often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing. Its main predators are birds of prey and leopards.

A new species of mammal has been discovered in the mountains of Tanzania, scientists report.

The bizarre-looking creature, dubbed Rhynochocyon udzungwensis, is a type of giant elephant shrew, or sengi.

They are so bizarre-looking and a lot of their behavioural ecology is so unique and interesting, you kind of get wrapped up with them

He said: "Elephant shrews are almost all distinguished by distinctive colour patterns, and this is especially true of the forest-dwelling giant sengis.

It has a grey face, a long, flexible snout, a bulky, amber body, a jet-black rump and it stands on spindly legs.

Despite its name, the creature, along with the 15 other known species of elephant shrew, is not actually related to shrews.

A submarine cable in the Middle East has been snapped, adding to global net problems caused by breaks in two lines under the Mediterranean on Wednesday.

The Falcon cable, owned by a firm which operates another damaged cable, led to a "critical" telecom breakdown, according to one local official.

Wednesday's incident caused disruption to 70% of the nationwide internet network in Egypt on Wednesday, while India suffered up to 60% disruption.

I'm newish to Toronto and the black squirrels freak me right out.

Last fall, they tried to eat through my back door, and nearly succeeded. This summer, they've chewed through my kitchen window screen TWICE, and the second time broke into a box of cocoa and got chocolate all over my kitchen.

They're scary.

The odds against an all-white squirrel being born are 100,000 to one and he may never have been discovered if a football had not hit his tree.

But a passer-by picked him up in Carlton Grove, Peckham, and took him to the London Wildcare Centre in Wallington, Surrey, where staff have named him Persil. Director Ted Burden said: "Persil is a very happy chap."

The sadly deluded reverend Bundy shouldn't be taken in by Persil's honkie exterior and reddened eyes. Neither should one read too much into Skwerlhugger Burden's statement that "Persil is a very happy chap."

Persil is nothing more than a albino variation of the common gray squirrel. Moreover, being "very happy" is hardly synonymous with being nice. Skwerl Persil is undoubtedly overjoyed at infiltrating the London Wildcare Centre, living on the dole and spreading the false promises of squirrel world domination.

I have decided that I have special powers.

Cat-Pigeons, Dog-Sheep and Hamster-Chickens.

Apparently Cat-Pigeons look just like normal pigeons except they meow and do very stringy poos.

Hamster-Chickens are basically just chickens, but the size of a hamster, with two sharp front teeth and an urge to run on a wheel.

“Cow-Horses”, some strange hybrid animal that is the result of a lunatic farmer trying to make a name for himself.

According to local people, no genetic experiments have taken place. It is purely down to good old fashioned rumpy pumpy.

I'm feeling a little odd.

Odder than usual.

I'm definately not right at the moment.

I think I'll leave it there.

Patriots,imagine that you're out for a Sunday drive with your family when, suddenly, a small, heretofore unseen chitterbox races helter-skelter across the road ahead of you. You're horrified by the mere thought, right?

There's little doubt that the writer encountered that over-agitated skwerlball popularly known as a "chipmunk"

who is the mysterious nutcruncher, where did it come from, how did it get to Plumpton, what does it want, and what should be done to counter the threat?

The writer postulates that the slavering chipster may be "just one escapee". A lone chipmunk would hardly be a concern unless it turned out to be the orphic Chipmunk 1344, or the maniacal Chipper the Ripper. The current whereabouts of these criminals is unknown.

A gliding mammal that lives in the forests of south-east Asia is our closest relative after apes, monkeys and lemurs, a DNA study shows.

Colugos are the "sisters" of primates, sharing a common ancestor some 80 million years ago when dinosaurs had their heyday, say US scientists.

Until now, many experts thought tree shrews were closer to primates.

Writing in Science, the team calls for urgent action to decipher the full genome sequence of colugos.

Colugos are known colloquially as flying lemurs; despite this they do not fly and they are not true lemurs.

Bat-like in appearance, and the size of a large squirrel, they use a special fold of skin to glide from tree to tree in tropical rainforests.
