These two men, who should have been poles apart politically, discovered in that first meeting, which lasted for hours, that they had similar visions of Israeli/Palestinian possible future cooperation. They decided to continue their dialogue and to collaborate on musical events to further their shared vision of peaceful co-existence in the Middle East. This led to Mr. Barenboim's first concert on the West Bank, a piano recital at the Palestinian Birzeit University in February 1999, and to a workshop for young musicians from the Middle East that took place in Weimar, Germany, in August 1999.

Said passed away in 2003 but his partnership with Daniel Barenboim lives on through

projects targeted at young Arabs and Israelis.

Clip Source: www.youtube.com

Tags: said barenboim, palestine israel

<clipSource>http://explorersfoundation.org/glyphery/203.html</clipSource>

Why Israel fits in with the West

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: "It is possible that war is the only way out of the situation created by Zionism. I leave it to others to find cause for rejoicing in this. But if there is any chance of some day seeing a peaceful solution, it will not be achieved by telling the Arabs that it is their duty to applaud their conquerors because they are Europeans or are in the process of becoming Europeanized, because they are 'advanced,' because they are revolutionary or (almost) socialist and, even less, simply because they are Jews! The most that can be asked of the Arabs is that they resign themselves to a disagreeable situation, and that in resigning themselves they make the best of their resignation. It is not easy to get a conquered person to resign himself to defeat, and it is not made any easier by loudly proclaiming how right it was that he was soundly beaten. It is generally wiser to offer him compensation. And those who have not suffered from the fight can (and, I believe, even must) recommend forgiveness ...

Clip Source: usa.mediamonitors.net

"Israel, A Colonial-Settler State?" is the question posed by the title of Prof. Maxime Rodinson’s 1973 book, which answers this crucial question in the affirmative.

Rodinson became well known in France when he expressed a certain reticence about Israel, despite himself being Jewish. He had always been suspicious of Zionism and considered those who expressed enthusiasm for Israel were indulging in a belated form of colonialism.

The Jews attracted by Zionism emigrated to Palestine, and then they dominated it. They occupied it in deed and then adopted legislation to justify this occupation by law ... To be aware of the colonial character of the State of Israel is to begin to make clear why the pressure of the events does so much to thrust Israel into the camp of the Western powers, and why any other orientation would require heroic efforts on the part of progressive elements in Israel ... The Zionist leaders are responsible [for] the colonization of a foreign land

Tags: western colonialism

<clipSource>http://usa.mediamonitors.net/content/view/full/51695</clipSource>

60 years (bitterlemons.org - Palestinian-Israeli Crossfire)

clipped by: Johanna_G
clipper's remarks: [Note: The links seem to work from the source page only.]
This project has been produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. As I watched the images last week of destruction from the Gaza Strip, where an Israeli shelling attack had killed an entire family, as a Palestinian I could understand the feelings of one survivor who said, "I cannot see a day when we will live in peace with them." But I also know there is no other choice.

When Israel was established, its founders said it would be an exemplary, moral state. For many Jews, it seemed like a miraculous redemption after so much suffering and loss in the Nazi Holocaust.

Palestinians experienced a different reality. Israel became a "Jewish state" in a country that had always been multicultural and multireligious. The expulsion and exclusion of Palestinians from their own homeland has led Israelis and Palestinians into an endless nightmare of mutual non-recognition and bloodshed.

Palestine-Israel could become for the first time ever the truly safe home where Israelis and Palestinians can accept each other

Ali Abunimah

author of One Country:

Tags: one-state solution, palestine-israel

<clipSource>http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article6023.shtml</clipSource>

"Shahida – Brides of Allah". An Israeli View of Female Palestinian Terrorists

clipped by: Johanna_G
clipper's remarks:

(Deutscher Originalartikel)

Clip Source: www.qantara.de

Over a period of two years, the Israeli director Natalie Assouline visited Palestinian women who were imprisoned after failed suicide attacks in Israel. You feel compassion for them when they talk wistfully about their children, whom they can only see through the bars.

When the 30-year-old Kahira is finally allowed to hug her four children in one scene, tears well up in the viewer's eyes – although he knows that this mother is a murderer.

The Israeli director Natalie Assouline portrays female Palestinian terrorists in her film debut. Nevertheless, she always allows the audience to feel the tension between sympathy and condemnation. The impressive documentary film is titled Shahida – "martyrs for Allah" in Arabic – and these prisoners do see themselves as martyrs. That is part of their self-deception.

Clip Source: de.youtube.com

Tags: terrorism, palestine, israel, suicide attacks, natalie assouline

<clipSource>http://www.qantara.de/webcom/show_article.php/_c-310/_nr-508/i.html</clipSource>

Ant-Zionist Jews and The Tyranny of Israel

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: That there are many, many enlightened Jews against the the tyranny of a nation operating under a fanatical ideology is a glimmer of hope that one day polarised hatreds will cease in the tragic region of Palestine

Clip Source: commentisfree.guardian.co.uk

Whenever Jews speak out against Israel, they are met with ad hominem criticism. Their motives, their representativeness, their authenticity as Jews are questioned. For only a psychological aberration, a neurotic malaise, could account for our defection from Israel's cause, which is presumed to be - whether we like it or not - our own cause. We are pathologised. So we are either bad Jews or Jews in bad faith.

It should go without saying, but unfortunately cannot, that being an anti-Zionist by no means implies a desire to destroy the Jews who live in Palestine. On the contrary, anti-Zionism is founded on a refusal to countenance discrimination on racial or religious grounds. The Jews of Israel have every right to live safely, to follow (or not) their religious faith, to adhere (or not) to their cultural heritage, to speak Hebrew. What they do not have is the right to continue to dispossess and oppress another people.

Tags: anti-zionism, israel

<clipSource>http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/mike_marqusee/2008/03/israels_jewish_critics.html</clipSource>

Sigmund Freud's Letter against Zionism!

clipped by: righthand
clipper's remarks: "Freud would not have been surprised at the continuing conflict in the Middle East. The real reasons for convening the conference were 1) to strengthen Arab government support for U.S. strategies in the Middle East, including the war in Iraq and particularly the escalation of pressure aimed at Iran. 2) To provide a photo-op to reframe Condoleezza Rice's legacy, now largely shaped by her embrace of Israel's bombardment of Lebanon in 2006, to the legacy of a would-be peacemaker.

Tags: iran, iraq, israelis, palestinians

<clipSource>http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=107&ItemID=14426</clipSource>
