Israeli Terrorists on Rampage

A settler attacked an Israel Defense Forces soldier at the West Bank outpost of Havat Gilad Thursday afternoon, holding a knife to the soldier's throat and forcibly removing his helmet from his head. The attacker then fled the scene.

The incident occurred during a confrontation between settlers and Israeli soldiers in the area, west of Nablus.

Other settlers at Havat Gilad set Palestinian olive groves on fire, sparking several field fires.

Earlier Thursday, Palestinian security officials said that more than 20 settlers had attacked another Palestinian village in the West Bank, Burin, smashing cars and windows and cutting electricity wires.

When police and soldiers intervened to restore order, a settler snatched a soldier's gun and fired in the air before being disarmed and arrested,

The closest settlement to Burin is Yitzhar, where a settler was arrested this month for allegedly trying to launch a homemade rocket at Burin.

In the early 1990s, a chance meeting between Mr. Barenboim and the late Palestinian-born writer and Columbia University professor Edward Said in a London hotel lobby led to an intensive friendship that has had both political and musical repercussions. These two men, who should have been poles apart politically, discovered in that first meeting, which lasted for hours, that they had similar visions of Israeli/Palestinian possible future cooperation. They decided to continue their dialogue and to collaborate on musical events to further their shared vision of peaceful co-existence in the Middle East. This led to Mr. Barenboim's first concert on the West Bank, a piano recital at the Palestinian Birzeit University in February 1999, and to a workshop for young musicians from the Middle East that took place in Weimar, Germany, in August 1999.

Said passed away in 2003 but his partnership with Daniel Barenboim lives on through

projects targeted at young Arabs and Israelis.

As I watched the images last week of destruction from the Gaza Strip, where an Israeli shelling attack had killed an entire family, as a Palestinian I could understand the feelings of one survivor who said, "I cannot see a day when we will live in peace with them." But I also know there is no other choice.

When Israel was established, its founders said it would be an exemplary, moral state. For many Jews, it seemed like a miraculous redemption after so much suffering and loss in the Nazi Holocaust.

Palestinians experienced a different reality. Israel became a "Jewish state" in a country that had always been multicultural and multireligious. The expulsion and exclusion of Palestinians from their own homeland has led Israelis and Palestinians into an endless nightmare of mutual non-recognition and bloodshed.

They pray to Allah and wear tightly tied headscarves, but they pose for a group photo and emphasize their femininity. You feel compassion for them when they talk wistfully about their children, whom they can only see through the bars.

When the 30-year-old Kahira is finally allowed to hug her four children in one scene, tears well up in the viewer's eyes – although he knows that this mother is a murderer.

The Israeli director Natalie Assouline portrays female Palestinian terrorists in her film debut. Nevertheless, she always allows the audience to feel the tension between sympathy and condemnation. The impressive documentary film is titled Shahida – "martyrs for Allah" in Arabic – and these prisoners do see themselves as martyrs. That is part of their self-deception.

Whenever Jews speak out against Israel, they are met with ad hominem criticism. Their motives, their representativeness, their authenticity as Jews are questioned. For only a psychological aberration, a neurotic malaise, could account for our defection from Israel's cause, which is presumed to be - whether we like it or not - our own cause. We are pathologised. So we are either bad Jews or Jews in bad faith.

It should go without saying, but unfortunately cannot, that being an anti-Zionist by no means implies a desire to destroy the Jews who live in Palestine. On the contrary, anti-Zionism is founded on a refusal to countenance discrimination on racial or religious grounds. The Jews of Israel have every right to live safely, to follow (or not) their religious faith, to adhere (or not) to their cultural heritage, to speak Hebrew. What they do not have is the right to continue to dispossess and oppress another people.

7.4 billion in aid to Palestinians

PARIS (Reuters) - An international donors' conference pledged $7.4 billion in aid to the Palestinians over the next three years, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Monday.

"Our goal had been for $5.6 billion. Now we have $7.4 billion," Kouchner told a news conference following the one-day conference which aimed to boost the Palestinian economy and underpin renewed Middle East peace talks.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy had urged the 68 visiting states to be generous at the conference, the financial sequel to last month's Annapolis meeting that launched the first Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in seven years.

"This conference is literally the government's last hope to avoid bankruptcy," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

Myth #1) The Annapolis meeting was designed to launch serious new negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians that aimed at ending the occupation and producing a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the region based on a two-state solution.

In fact, the two main reasons for the conference had virtually nothing to do with Israel or Palestine. The real reasons for convening the conference were 1) to strengthen Arab government support for U.S. strategies in the Middle East, including the war in Iraq and particularly the escalation of pressure aimed at Iran. 2) To provide a photo-op to reframe Condoleezza Rice's legacy, now largely shaped by her embrace of Israel's bombardment of Lebanon in 2006, to the legacy of a would-be peacemaker.
