Die israelische Regisseurin Natalie Assouline hat über zwei Jahre Palästinenserinnen begleitet, die nach gescheiterten Selbstmordanschlägen in Israel inhaftiert wurden. Entstanden ist ein aufwühlender Film voller Widersprüche.

Als in einer Szene die 30-jährige Kahira endlich ihre vier Kinder umarmen darf, kommen dem Zuschauer Tränen in die Augen. Und das, obwohl er weiß, dass diese Mutter eine Mörderin ist.

Die israelische Regisseurin Natalie Assouline porträtiert in ihrem Debütfilm palästinensische Terroristinnen. Dabei lässt sie die Zuschauer immer wieder in der Spannung zwischen Mitgefühl und Verurteilung. Der bedrückende Dokumentarfilm heißt "Shahida", auf Arabisch "die Heilige", und als Heilige sehen sich diese Gefangenen. Das ist Teil ihrer Selbsttäuschung.

They pray to Allah and wear tightly tied headscarves, but they pose for a group photo and emphasize their femininity. You feel compassion for them when they talk wistfully about their children, whom they can only see through the bars.

When the 30-year-old Kahira is finally allowed to hug her four children in one scene, tears well up in the viewer's eyes – although he knows that this mother is a murderer.

The Israeli director Natalie Assouline portrays female Palestinian terrorists in her film debut. Nevertheless, she always allows the audience to feel the tension between sympathy and condemnation. The impressive documentary film is titled Shahida – "martyrs for Allah" in Arabic – and these prisoners do see themselves as martyrs. That is part of their self-deception.

November 29 is an opportunity to recall the reasons underlying the decision of the international community in 1947 to divide the country into two nation-states: a "Jewish State" and an "Arab State,"

The report said, among other things:

he basic conflict in Palestine is a clash of two intense nationalisms. Regardless of the historic origins of the conflict... there are now in Palestine some 650,000 Jews and some 1,200,000 Arabs who are dissimilar in their ways of living and, for the time being, separated by political interests. [...] Only by means of partition can these conflicting national aspirations find substantial expression and qualify both peoples to take their places as independent nations in the international community and in the United Nations. [...] Jewish immigration is the central issue in Palestine today and is the one factor, above all others, that rules out the necessary co-operation between the Arab and Jewish communities in a single State.

My heart goes out to the Palestinians. Not only because their entire world has become one of despair, immobility, bloodshed, disillusionment, crumbling infrastructure, crumbling history, crumbling horizons

Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator for the Palestine Liberation Organization, declared Monday that the Palestinians will not recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

What matters is whether the Palestinians can live alongside a state which happens to be Jewish in character.

Most Jewish Israelis

accept the idea of an independent Palestinian state, in which the dominant religion will certainly be Islam.

Never mind the fact that leftists the world over can live with the concept of explicitly Muslim states teaching the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and other explicitly anti-Semitic texts, while arguing that the very idea of a Jewish state implies and, in fact, compels racism against non-Jews.

Israelis Will Discuss Core Issues

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert intends to release more Palestinian prisoners as a gesture of good will to the Palestinian Authority prior to the Annapolis summit.

The prime minister is currently examining a request by the PA for freeing as many as 2,000 prisoners, according to sources in his bureau, but no decision has yet been made on the final number or the timing of the release.

Olmert has insisted that the joint declaration at Annapolis will not refer to the "core issues," nor to a fixed timetable for a solution to them. However, later Sunday, the prime minister did say that negotiations with the Palestinians after the summit will focus on the core issues.

"All the fundamental questions, the substantive issues, all the historical questions burdening our debate - are on the agenda," Olmert said during an address at the Saban Forum, an annual gathering of Israeli and U.S. political leaders.

This week, two Israeli colleagues and I were due to appear at the union to participate in an important debate on the one-state solution in Israel-Palestine. Also invited was the American Jewish scholar and outspoken critic of Israel, Norman Finkelstein. At the last minute, however, the union withdrew its invitation to him, apparently intimidated by threats from various pro-Israel groups.

Harvard Jewish lawyer and indefatigable defender of Israel, Alan Dershowitz, attacked the topic of the debate as well as the Oxford Union itself. In an article headlined “Oxford Union is dead”, he accused it of having become “a propaganda platform for extremist views”

In solidarity with Finkelstein

three of us on the “one state” side - myself, Avi Shlaim, of St Anthony’s College, Oxford, and the Israeli historian Ilan Pappe - decided to withdraw from the debate.

Britain is different, naively innocent in the face of US-style assaults on its scholars and institutions.

600,000 Israelis and Palestinians Call for Two State Solution

More than half a million Israelis and Palestinians have signed a petition calling on the Israeli and Palestinian governments to reach a peace agreement within the next year based on a two-state solution and an Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 lines.

The petition is being organized by a non-partisan organization called the OneVoice movement, which is planning to hold simultaneous rallies in both Tel Aviv and Jericho next week that will be broadcast around the world in an effort to garner support for the two-state solution.

"If the Israeli and Palestinian heads of state demonstrate progress over the coming months, they will be able to eventually reverse the debacle in Gaza, by pointing to a positive alternative that will undermine extremism,"

According to the newspaper report, Olmert and Abbas had agreed that the Temple Mount sites would be under Jordanian jurisdiction in a final peace deal, and Jordanian citizenship would be granted to 90,000 east Jerusalem residents.

The report drew strong criticism from both the Right and even Olmert's coalition partner, Shas.

"If the report is true, the Israeli government has stripped itself of any linkage to Zionism or its Jewish roots," MK Uri Ariel (NU/NRP) said.

"The Olmert government is trying to destroy the dreams of thousands of generations who have dreamed and worked to return the Jewish people to its land," he said. "We won't let him succeed."
