How to make your own toothpaste

Gather the Following Ingredients

Baking Soda

Table Salt

Water (note Designer Water not needed)

Peppermint oil for taste (optional)

Gylcerine (you can pick this stuff up from your local pharmacy or meth lab)

What To do

Mix three parts of baking soda with one part of table salt.
For every 1/4 cup of dry mixture made add 3 teaspoons of Gylcerine
Add enough water to make a thick paste (think caramel thick…mmm caramel). If your not into trying new things throw in a few drops of peppermint oil in to make your mixture taste like everything else on the store shelfs.
Now for the fun part, slap some of your new toothpaste on your brush and give it a whirl. Now you really don’t have an excuse for nasty chompers eh?
You can store you mixture like you would any old toothpaste.

Roasted Garlic Potato Soup

6 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces

2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 onion, chopped

6 cloves garlic, peeled

3 cups chicken broth

1 cup water

1 cup whole milk

salt to taste

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

Place potatoes in a shallow roasting pan and drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Sprinkle with pepper; stir to coat. Bake for 25 minutes, or until potatoes are browned. Reserve 1 cup of roasted potatoes.

In a 3 quart saucepan heat remaining oil; saute onions for 5 minutes. Add potatoes and garlic and stir in broth and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.

Spoon half of broth mixture into a blender; blend until nearly smooth. Repeat with remaining mixture; return all to pot. Stir in milk and season with salt to taste. Ladle into bowls and top with reserved roasted potatoes.

Oil production in Iraq is at its highest level since the US-led invasion of 2003, reaching 2.4 million barrels a day, thanks largely to improved security measures in the north.

The country’s Oil Ministry will shortly invite international oil companies to bid for contracts to help Iraq to boost output at its investment-starved “super-giant” oilfields. Production is expected to pass the prewar level of 2.6 million barrels by the end of the year, and Hussain al-Shahristani, the Iraqi Oil Minister, told The Times that he expected production to reach six million barrels a day within four years.

Oil prices leaped to another record high yesterday as Israel warned Iran about its nuclear sites and the dollar slumped on news of the biggest jump in US unemployment for 22 years.

Already jittery oil markets were sent into spasm by remarks from Israel's transport minister that an attack on Iranian nuclear sites looked "unavoidable". Any attack on the country would threaten supplies from the whole region.

Shares dived after the US unemployment rate unexpectedly jumped to 5.5%, intensifying fears that the world's biggest economy is sliding into recession.

Vegan Refried Bean Soup

Makes 4-6 servings.
Recipe from Fatfree Vegan Kitchen.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
3 - 4 cloves garlic, minced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
1 14-ounce can fire-roasted diced tomatoes
15 ounces refried black beans
15 ounces black beans, cooked
1 cup frozen corn kernels
1 teaspoon cumin
1 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/8 - 1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder (to taste)
1 teaspoon hot sauce (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon Mexican oregano (optional)
salt and pepper, to taste

Directions
Heat olive oil in a large non-stick pot, and sauté the onion until it begins to brown. Add the garlic and bell pepper and cook for one more minute. Add all the remaining ingredients and cook until the flavors blend, 20-30 minutes.

Fierce Fighting in Basra

Heavy fighting has erupted in Iraq's southern city of Basra amid a pre-dawn offensive by Iraqi security forces against the Mehdi Army, a Shia militia.

Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki is in Basra overseeing the operation, a day after he vowed to "re-impose law" in the oil-rich city, the UK military said.

Authorities in Basra have already imposed an indefinite night-time curfew because of the security situation.

The Iraqi army conducted raids across Basra on Tuesday, while routes into the city have been sealed off, according to reports.

After Monday's curfew was imposed, the powerful Mehdi Army warned it would retaliate if its members were targeted in any security clampdown.

The militia is loyal to radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, who last month renewed a ceasefire the group had been observing since last August.

The oil fields in the Basra area are the source of most of Iraq's revenues.

Remedios Varo (December 16, 1908 - October 8, 1963) was a Spanish-Mexican surrealist painter. She was born in Anglés Cataluña, Spain in 1908 and died from a heart-attack in Mexico City in 1963. During the Spanish Civil War she fled to Paris where she was largely influenced by the surrealist movement. She met in Barcelona the french surrealist poet Benjamin Péret and became his wife. She was forced into exile from Paris during the Nazi occupation of France and moved to Mexico City at the end of 1941

After 1949 Varo developed into her mature and remarkable style, which remains beautifully enigmatic and instantly recognizable. She often worked in oil on masonite panels she prepared herself. Although her colors have the blended resonance of the oil medium, her brushwork often involved many fine strokes of paint laid closely together - a technique more reminiscent of egg tempera

Homemade Peanut Butter

Anyone with a blender or food processor can easily make their own homemade peanut butter.

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups roasted shelled peanuts
1 tablespoon peanut oil
1/2 teaspoon salt (omit if salted peanuts are used)

PREPARATION:

If using a blender, put the oil in first. Add the peanuts and salt next. Blend until desired consistency is reached.

In the food processor, use the metal blade to process ingredients continuously for 2 to 3 minutes.

Stop the machine to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Continue to process until the desired consistency is obtained.

For crunchy peanut butter, stir in an additional 1/2 cup chopped roasted peanuts after the processing is completed.

The world is changing in a very major way. Oil is in short supply, and this shortage is likely to get larger in the future. The pressure of short supply and rising prices adds a systematic bias that the financial community is not recognizing. This bias has as its basis the fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for both people and businesses to pay back loans, because of the rising costs of oil and food. This situation cannot be expected to go away. In fact, it is certain to get worse in years ahead, as oil supplies become tighter.

Besides the systematic bias, there is also a systemic risk, arising from the interconnectedness of all of the parts of the economy. This was well described in a post a few days ago called The Failure of Networked Systems. One of the issues in systemic risk relates to the financial system itself. If one party in the financial system fails, it increases the likelihood that other parties in the economic system will fail as well.

A wave of money is flooding into the commodity markets, adding more lustre to gold and pointing a spotlight on obscure markets such as coffee, cocoa and palm oil, as investors take fright from credit risk and the looming spectre of recession.

Gold and platinum hit new records yesterday as traditional investors sought out safe havens for cash in troubled times. Concern over emerging signs of recession in the United States depressed the price of crude oil, which seesawed in indecision yesterday, but coffee and cocoa soared as investors searched for the next commodity stars.

The price of crude oil soared to $100 per barrel for the first time yesterday in a trend that could feed through into higher petrol prices and delay an early cut in interest rates this year.

Aggressive buying by speculators, cold weather in the northern hemisphere and the falling US dollar helped to propel the price of oil to a record on the Nymex exchange in New York.

The increase to $100 — which is also a psychological benchmark — adds to the growing signs of pressure on consumers. British Gas recently said that higher gas prices meant that bills for its 10 million customers might have to rise, while food inflation is threatening to push up the cost of the weekly trip to the supermarket

The cost of crude oil has tripled in the past four years on booming demand from fastgrowing Asian economies.
