In a society of lowered horizons and diminished expectations, security and safety have become the highest values and the goal of preserving health has become the zenith of human aspirations.

Postponing death, through austere regimes of diet and exercise, moderation and restraint, and through regular submission to the medical surveillance of check-ups and screening tests, now takes precedence over enjoying life

fetishism of the body in contemporary culture, expressed in cults of body enhancement as well as the narcissism of the complete check-up, is linked to a pervasive fear of disease and an ultimate terror of death. These preoccupations reflect a fantasy of mastering the unmasterable, and a disavowal of death.

Though subjecting the body to a relentless regime of prevention and surveillance is unlikely to make much difference to the duration of our animal existence, it is certain to reduce the scope of our humanity – as well as imposing an unsustainable burden on our health services.

Tags: neurosis, narcissism, existential dread

<clipSource>http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php?/site/earticle/5042/</clipSource>

RealClimate: Real Scientists on Real Science

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: A bit boring. This can be frustrating for scientists like ourselves who see agenda-driven 'commentary' on the Internet and in the opinion columns of newspapers crowding out careful analysis.

RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists.

A novel study that attempts to paint the most accurate and detailed description yet of how Americans experience pain has found that a significant portion of the population -- 28 percent -- are in pain at any given moment and those with less education and lower income spend more of their time in pain. Those in pain are less likely to work or socialize with others and are more inclined to watch television than the pain-free.

The study, which appears in the May 3 issue of The Lancet, was prepared by Alan Krueger, a professor of economics at Princeton University, and Arthur Stone, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stony Brook University. The work is the first of its type, according to the authors, to quantify a "pain gap" in American society, with the "have-nots" suffering a disproportionate amount in relation to the "haves."

Tags: pain, education, rich, poor

<clipSource>http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S20/96/62A85/index.xml?section=topstories,featured</clipSource>

How Can Conservatives Use The Internet Better?

clipped by: akarra
clipper's remarks: The clip is just the conclusion, the article is rather long. There are links in the article, moreover, which provide sources for the article.

Clip Source: zardozz.com

We have a virtue as conservatives and centrists - we listen. We react instead of pushing our agenda first. And this means we have blogs that do an excellent job of critiquing media bias and stupid policies.

But it’s obvious we need something more: the floodgates are open. Bush bashing is just the tip of the iceberg: Does anyone seriously think the next President is going to be treated any more kindly? Does anyone seriously think that we, who are very mature in the conduct of our private lives, are showing anything like grace and decorum when it comes to our conduct politically?

4. We need the Internet to be educative, not merely a diversion for bored teenagers or angry Leftists and libertarians. In education, listening is an activity, and a type of faction arises which not only tolerates disagreement but creates an environment where more thoughtful disagreement can occur. We need to set things up so we always make each other better, and not tear each other down.

Tags: conservative, dailykos, politics, internet, education

<clipSource>http://zardozz.com/zz/2007/12/what-is-the-best-way-to-use-the-internet-to-influence-politics.html</clipSource>
