“Scientifically, the forces of evolution by natural selection have been profoundly affected for humankind by the changes in culture and environment and the expansion of the human species to 6 billion members. So what you see is pretty much what you get.”
“If one is willing to accept the existence of God or some supernatural force outside nature then it is not a logical problem to admit that, occasionally, a supernatural force might stage an invasion,” he says.

Francis Collins, the director of the US National Human Genome Research Institute, claims there is a rational basis for a creator and that scientific discoveries bring man “closer to God”.

His book, The Language of God, to be published in September, will reopen the age-old debate about the relationship between science and faith. “One of the great tragedies of our time is this impression that has been created that science and religion have to be at war,” said Collins, 56.

For Collins, unravelling the human genome did not create a conflict in his mind. Instead, it allowed him to “glimpse at the workings of God”.

When you make a breakthrough it is a moment of scientific exhilaration because you have been on this search and seem to have found it,” he said. “But it is also a moment where I at least feel closeness to the creator in the sense of having now perceived something that no human knew before but God knew all along

And where would you be if all there was is me? Verbs are the electricity of stories, being comes into being on energy's random licking of obscure and fleeting objects.

Here I am, noticing time… noticing the symbols of time… noticing that the clock says: “12:12” and thinking how seldom I run into this symmetry of hours and minutes… hearing a church bell chime… hearing a factory whistle… hearing the alarm clock beeping… noticing clock hands move with their Parkinsonian tics… noticing time… noticing myself being-in-time… remembering my first watch… remembering staring at the clock in the middle of a sleepless night… remembering being amazed by the sun-dial… and bringing myself back to this moment of being-in-time… playing time-tag with my consciousness of my presence… till next time…

Just one thought on my mind: being is a gerund. What’s a gerund? It’s a process in time. Being is a process in time...

A thermometer measures temperature. A tire gauge measures pressure. What does a clock measure? Clock is the only "device" that measures nothing. Nothing, except for self-imposed pressure...

Brain 'imaging' in the Renaissance

clipper's remarks: So were these master artists of the Renaissance trying to hide images of anatomically correct brains in their religious work? Why would they do it? Were they trying to put science into religion without getting caught? Or is this just one big coincidence? Maybe the four scientists that wrote the article need to take a break from the neurosciences.

An interesting article published by four UK scientists in the neurosciences speculates that the masters of the Renaissance hid brain imagery in their religious masterpieces. Some of the sneaky artists in question include Raphael, Michelangelo, and Gerard David.

During the Renaissance, scholars began to rely more on empirical evidence, especially in the anatomical sciences.

Artists were especially fascinated, but with most of their commissions coming from the religious clergy, how could they show off their deeper knowledge of the human body without being sacreligious? They had to hide it in their artwork.

FL Mershberger was the first to suggest hidden brain anatomy in Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.” He noted that the cloth and figures behind God resembled the shape of an anatomically correct brain.

Meshberger’s interpretation is that “God, in the process of creating Adam, gives him the gift of ‘intellect,’ symbolized by the brain.”

So, then, it would seem that in order for us to show inter-est in others’ thoughts, for us to inter-exist, we need to lose interest in our own thoughts. To co-exist, it seems, we need to never mind our own minds. With no thoughts to stand in the way of understanding, there is nothing between us, there are no gaps of misunderstanding to bridge…>>>

Did you know that the semantics of the word “interest” have to do with inter-existence (“inter” – between, “est” – to be)? The nineteenth century philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard noted that the word “inter-est” “expresses the fact that we are so intimately involved in the objective world that we cannot be content to regard truth objectively, i.e. disinterestedly” (1).

While Kierkegaard here seemed to be concerned with the notions of truth and objectivity, this quotation (I stumbled upon in Rollo May’s “Meaning of Anxiety”), prompted a realization that being mindfully interested in each other is nothing less than meeting in between. Mindful presence is a co-existence in the space of shared subjectivity, without the usual preoccupations with the truth…

There will be those who will counter that critics of Israel are often mistakenly and/or derisively termed anti-Semitic. That is too often true. But it is no justification for letting true Jew hate slide.

The jihad has a problem with the Jews.

Not just a problem with Israel. Not just the occupation. Not just the policies of the Israeli government, the actions of the Israel Defense Forces, the support by Washington and the West for Israel's embargo against Hamas-ruled Gaza.

Islamists don't care who knows it anymore. They hate the Jews. And, not to put too fine a point on it, they want the Jews dead.

There is imam and legislator Sheik Yunus al-Astal, who, citing a Koranic verse indicating that "suffering by fire is the Jews' destiny in this world and the next," concludes that "we are sure that the holocaust is still to come upon the Jews."

Quite clearly, there are those for whom the existence of the Jews is intolerable.
